Swan Attack

A swan in Kent which is the county called the food basket of England has been killed by a dog attack. The second in three days. What is surprising here is that the dog was actually on one of those detractable leads. The type with metres and meters of lead where the owner has some sort of handle. Should these long leads be banned?

What's going on here. It's all over the news

No they shouldn’t be banned. The owners should still be in control of the dog with a retractable lead

That's sad poor Swan! I was with son yesterday at a country park he cares for autistic children and this little yorkie was of lead totally out of control it was yapping insanely all the while clinging and jumping up the poor boys leg! The owner just couldn't catch the dog! She was very apologetic! Btbf if u don't have instant recall shouldn't b of lead as for the retractable ones ( I have one for my dog) owners shd b aware of surroundings and real them in if other animals/ people nearby!it's easy to do so! X

I've nearly been tripped up a few times by retractable leads. I think they're great but I wish *some* owners would be aware of what their dogs are doing at the end of them and keep the lead short in areas where there are a lot of people eg buses, pavements and pub gardens.

Licence dogs and hold the owners accountable.

I hate them leads, well more I hate how a lot of people use them. Walking along the pavement with the dog wandering where it wants, often not paying attention to where, drives me insane, I've had to break more than once as dogs have ventured onto the road.

Also know of injuries to owners caused by them (friction burns) and of a dog who ran into the road on one and was run over and killed.

If they are going to be used owners need to still be in control and pay attention.

I drove between 2 parked vans the other week. Woman hidden behind one, dog hidden behind the other, lead right across the road. Thankfully I saw it.

Cats kill birds all the time that's never all over the news.

Why are dogs being singled out for this behaviour?

The whole point of a retractable lead is that you have it set short when you’re around hazards/obstacles/people and long when it’s safe to do so, ie in fields. They’re meant for dogs who have poor recall so they can still exercise without buggering off

My elderly nextdoor neighbour got bitten on the leg by a rotweiller. She fell over and broke her hip. She was told she couldn't sue as the dog was on a (retractable) lead therefore under control.

She absolutely can sue, leash or not. A dog can still be out of control even on a lead, as evidenced by it biting your elderly neighbour.

I thought that was irrational for a moment. Silly me, it's nothing to do with species at all, it's because they are the property of the King. Of course.

Retractable leads aren't great for some dogs, it's very true. If they're not purchased for the correct weight of the dog, they will snap easily. However - the owner is responsible for not controlling their dog!

Not sure if the same laws apply with swans but we have had cases around here of dogs attacking livestock - farmer+ gun soon makes sure people control their other dogs (mainly because the one attacking the sheep is dead).

"Cats kill birds all the time that's never all over the news.

Because a dog has the potential to be a killer to human as well as birds a dog out of control doesn't follow boundaries set in place by the pack leader which in this case should be the human.

Once a dog had a taste for blood next time it may be a child or adult.

To my knowledge I can't think of a person being mauled to death by a domestic cat!

True but they are usually fed it and don't kill it themselves.

Just saying.

In any case it is 100% the dog owners who are at fault.

Personally I don't believe a dog that attacks a wild animal, or even another dog, necessarily means they would then attack a human or child. What about dogs that are trained to go rabbiting/ratting etc, they are often also family pets.

My dog has previously attacked another dog, do I worry it would be a child next? No as he loves children, if anything he protects them. However it means I am now a lot more cautious of him around other dogs for everyone's safety.

He also lives with a kitten who we've recently introduced him to.

Oh but he eats raw food, so is obviously vicious

I don’t get retractable leads. I either keep my dog on a short fixed length lead or he’s off the lead mooching about as he’s been trained for recall.

Having owned and trained Springer Spaniels for Gun work for more years than I like to think about I consider I do know a bit about Dogs To most people they want a Dog that is well behaved not aggressive but above all a good family pet/ friend. These retractable leads are the worst possible thing you can use on any breed of dog . With any dog the owner had to be the boss but with those leads the dog being in front doing pretty much anything it wants the dog becomes the boss not you. Most folk want a dog that is a pleasure to take out one you can let of a lead and when called comes back straight away a dog that walks nicely on the lead beside you or of the lead beside you . To get to that standard is very very basic and straightforward it’s not rocket science. 90% of dogs can achieve what I have said within 4/6 weeks easily . If anyone wants advice how to get a dog to that standard feel free to pvt message BUT retractable leads are awful and have no place in dog ownership
