What happened to the Blackpool Illuminations?

Remember when the Illuminations used to have great visuals and themes?
Now, it just seems that the Illuminations just become more disappointing each passing year. Sure they may add some new lights but I feel that adding just a few lights is not gonna be bringing many people rushing to the promenade anytime soon. What happened to this amazing light show?
Well, I read somewhere that due to budget cuts and redundancies from the team that make the new themes for the Illuminations over the past 20 years, the Blackpool Council can't seem to afford to have the Illuminations like it used to be decades ago except spare 2 million quid to keep the Illuminations running.
This got me thinking, if the Blackpool Council can afford to turn the switch on events into a big concert every year, where is the money coming from for that? I reckon it's coming from the budget for the Illuminations. It seems to me that they're spending so much money on getting big names to come to Blackpool and do these concerts rather than using that money on what got people coming to Blackpool in the first place and that is the Illuminations themselves. |

I'm beginning to believe that the Blackpool Council don't really care about the town anymore nor the people and just want more money in their pockets.
Where's that £300 million new leisure complex they went on about a few years ago? If it is gonna be built, I'd give it at least 10 years before that will happen. |

As a child it was a highlight to go and stay with my grandparents in Thornton Cleveleys, just up the road. Then we'd all take a trip on a tram to see the illuminations. We did it every year  |

I loved seeing the Illuminations as a kid back in the 90s. We used to have a caravan at the Windy Harbour and would stay there sometimes on weekends and holidays. It was always fun parking up near Central Pier and walking as far as the tower and then back while heading into some arcades on the way. Good times |

I went on my first date with my wife in Blackpool.
I still love the place for that reason, but honestly I think it has bigger issues than a few lights.
What they need there is a yellow Submarine and some flowers. That will fix everything  |

I'm afraid I wouldn't have a clue what was there in the 90s. The last time I was in Blackpool was in 1983 for my grandad's funeral |

I used to go up quite a bit in the 90s to see them, my parents had a touring caravan and I remember one year they said we wouldn't be going and then surprised us, it was the best times!!
I have wanted to go back for years but never get there and I'm always met with "why do you want to go to that shit hole!" I'll get there one day, I imagine it's nothing like I remember when I was 9 years old.

Anyone remember the out door trampolenes?
Great memories.
With modern tech they could make it bigger better and more efficient surely

I no was there a couple of week ago. Saw the raid closed to cars and cyclist rode the promenade all night. It was lovely to see families enjoying the lights being on that way. That was different and loads of fun, and must have cost very little to organise.
Things don’t have to cost millions, just think outside the box and embrace change instead of pouring into something that maybe ran its course.
I like the light, keep em, but you wouldn’t find me sat in a traffic jam for 3 hrs to see them anymore.  |

As a kid growing up in Glasgow the whole street used to jump in a bus and go for a week
Usually meant the adults drinking non stop for a week but great fun to be had as a lad
Going on a tram to witness the lights most nights great fun
Last time I was in Blackpool I revisited where we used to stay and it’s become a homeless hostel sad day

I agree. It's a shame the Blackpool Council seems to waste more money on the switch on concerts rather than making better light.
The tableaux was always my favourite as a kid. I can remember one tableaux that was of The Real Ghostbusters which was pretty cool. |

Coming up next weekend to see them and as I haven't seen them before, I can't really comment but hopefully they will be good! Ball Park question I know, but can anyone recommend a few pubs/restaurants that they've been too?
Up with the other half who unfortunately doesn't do or get this lifestyle so it will have to be a 'Vanilla' style weekend with no extra fun!  |
