Dear Ladiës and Persons of Interest...
I was chatting to a potential 'future ex-wife' the other day and she was telling me how her trips to the hairdressers were becoming increasingly expensive.
It's a vintage question... seriously why does a visit to the hairdressers cost so much? Also, do you cave in at the final moment during payment and pick up a haircare product or two, thus further hammering your credit card and making the overall experience a costly one? |

It's so expensive because we keep paying it. It costs me approximately £110 each visit. I'm there around four hours and my stylist fits others in while my tint is developing. The apprentice washes it and makes my cups of tea and coffee.
I have been to salons where it's less expensive and it's truly not worth it. I never buy products but if the woman who does my hair recommends something she will always offer to get it for me at trade price. |

I have a haircut booked in 25 minutes and I expect it to cost about £15. A simple dry trim. It's gone up by a few pounds in the last year or so. Totally expected with inflation. And never in my life have I bought any products from a hair salon. Clearly I'm not future ex-wife material |

It don’t seem right does it …before covid I was paying 70.00 for a cut colour and blow dry plus a olaplex to help my hair with the bleaching
..After covid I payed 80.00 for the same treatment now it’s gone up again to 85.00 I can’t really justify that anymore so I colour it myself at home and have it cut and blow dryed at the hairdressers which costs 30 plus I give a tip ..
I did buy olaplex from the hairdressers which was extremely expensive so I found a cheaper alternative on Amazon which is doing exactly the same job .. |

I'm a serial hairmogamist. Once I find a stylist I like I tend to stick with them. It's a bit like the elusive fab 'connection'. We're the best of friends and confidentes while in the salon but once the end goal has been reached we go our separate ways |

Fortunately my daughter is a qualified hairdresser. She cuts my hair. The grey has now given me the silver highlights that I used to pay to get put in and then also needed treatment because bleach and peroxide are so drying.
One of the better things about getting older |

Thank you, it depends a lot on how warm it is (I don't blow dry or use heat on it at all). On a cold day then it takes quite a few hours- half a day or so, but if it's warm with a bit of a breeze then it can be dry in ~2 hours. |

My husband and I go to the same barbers, I go for my undercut (back of my head) and pattern in my hair. He goes for his beard to be styled.
Mine costs £15, his costs £9.
I haven't had the balls to ask why I'm being charged so much but even if I had my hair cut there I'd be charged more just for being a woman. I should mention my husband has longer hair than me, he'd be charged alot less! |

Hmm this is where I indulge. I don’t wash my own hair.
I go to the hairdressers once a week. If I’m swimming it is left to dry on its own.
To be fair I don’t really mind washing it, but it does take forever to dry
And no I never buy products. I don’t need to. She does it all there |

But as I’m growing my hair, I’ve asked hairdressers about different styles and it is expensive. I got charged £40 two years ago for normal canerows. It lasted about 2-3 weeks. Paying that every 2-3 weeks is ridiculous. I know some people have them in longer but it itches after a while and doesn’t look as good. I’m waiting for it to become long enough again so I can manage to do some styles myself. |

My hair gets cut 3-4 a year, and I like treating myself to a curly blow from time to time, though my hair is my natural colour so not really spending too much as i don't need colouring or highlights. I do tint my roots to get rid of those pesky greys from time to time though - but do that at home.
I always buy decent quality shampoo and conditioner at the hairdressers and my hair is always in really good condition.
Though I've just realised that my teenage son has been using my £40 shampoo - I had wondered why it was looking so empty, so quick!

I don't buy the products at the salon, they're always a lot cheaper elsewhere. I'm quite lucky that an inlaw owns a salon so I've been going there for the past few years - definitely get family rate. £30 for a trim, Olaplex treatment and a blowdry. I've only been once in the past few months, currently trying to minimise heat usage and grow my hair out. |

KC², it's akin to car insurance. Shop around and you may be able to haggle down to £42.34½p. The word on the boulevard is that loyalty means very little these days. |

I think the price differences are reflective of the relative importance of appearance and image to men and women. |

Not been to one in many many years! Maybe 20? I get one of daughters or granddaughters whoever is around that are not hairdressers to just trim couple inches of bottom every 4 months or so! That's it no colouring leave it natural these days! Back in the 80s had the perm every few months! X |

Mine is currently £42 for a cut and blow dry but I lasts round it up to £45. I only go every 8 weeks approx. I currently box dye my hair though as it will start getting ridiculous money and so far I can still get away with doing it myself. |

I have two colours, moisture treatment cut and finish, I pay £50 but only because I increased it, shes charged me £40 for years, I felt it wasnt enough. I do think some of the salons rip it a bit, I used to use a well known national salon chain and found my current stylist after they made a mess of my colour. She fixed it and I've stuck with her. |

I have my hair cut twice a year, wet cut as I love the head massage, found a wash in wash out toner which turns all my greys blonde, so I now have multi coloured hair again, rather than a full head box dye once a month with grey roots after a week |

I pay £56 every 8 weeks if I don't end up cutting it myself.
Colour it myself properly at home as I qualified as a hairdresser many years ago, just don't bother doing it now.
Get all my hair products from the hairdressing supply shops.

"I think a lot of the costs go into marketing.
Salon names like
Jane Hair
Prime Cuts
It’s a Snip and
Cheryl LeVisage don’t come cheap you know. "

Indeed. Even Headmasters were initially a mid-tier salon but now charge astronomical prices! |

the abyss |
I hardly ever get my haircut mainly due to the cost. It would look a lot nicer if I actually took care of it but there are always other bills.
When dying my hair I more often do it myself, so again cutting the cost.
So for me hairdressers are very inexpensive |

I get mine cut by a mobile hairdresser every now and then and it’s £30. I have had my hair done in places like Vidal Sassoon etc where it costs a ruddy arm and a leg. I think you pay for the salon experience with them, where you get pampered (tea/coffee and a magazine) in nice trendy surroundings, the latest training, the latest products. |

I stopped going as it was getting more and more expensive, so I no longer colour it and trim it myself. It's long, so no one will notice if I fuck it up. I do the butterfly/shag cut thing. Looks ok! |

A hairdresser would have a blue fit if they saw my hair and probably cry. I have been sort of hacking away at it myself for years, but I have hacked myself into a corner and could probably do with a restyling. I'll just grow it a bit first |

My economics professor at uni.
What determines the price we set for a product or service?
After 20 minutes of debate.
'No you are all wrong, the price is set by what the customer is willing to pay.'
Then he rambled on about there being no birds in Beijing for an hour.
What's the classic example, Hayek? If you are dying of thirst in the Sahara you'll trade a bag of diamonds for water.
Guess they really want that haircut. Fail to notice at your peril. |

How interesting to hear everyone's experiences and attitude. But cross that I can't enjoy a look of LolaDaisy's hair after the numerous compliments!
Loads of different pricing tiers available in my area, and really for cuts at least I've never found reliable correlation between price & quality of service. If anything I'd say high-end salons give poor quality cuts, perhaps because much of the focus is on colouring and treatments, which admittedly is highly technical and if it goes wrong it can be disastrous. |

I've not had my hair cut in a year. I'd prefer to have it quite short but it's expensive to have short hair!
It cost about £55 for a cut at Toni & Guy last time I went, I've been going there for over 10 years. I have very thick, wavy hair and cheaper places just haven't done a good job. I'd love to get it cut more regularly as it's so unruly, but money is needed elsewhere. |

My experience has been that cheaper places aren't as skilled. It's taken me about 5 years to find a stylist who will cut in the best way for my hair and who understands that different types of hair work better with different styles. It stands to reason that those most in demand can demand the highest prices. I've had to book as far in advance as January to ensure regular appointments. |

If you have long straight hair I imagine it's not too problematic or pricey to get a trim, but I agree that for some hair types - more skill is needed. Apparently I have tricky hair It will be even trickier by the time I get it cut again. |

Ah, but is that once a year?
Before I had Alopecia I used to have my hair cut every ten days because it grew so fast and the 'penny cuts' added up over time. |

. I don't know if I have tricky hair or not but if it's cut properly it's easy to style even if it does take ages and will hold that style until next time it gets wet. |
