Dear Ladiës and Persons of Interest ...
I was chatting to a friend over the weekend who was relaying her frustrations when experiencing episodes of hot flushes. I totally sympathised of course, listening to her 'plight' but clearly unable to offer any words of wisdom.
Is this something confined to Perimenopause or is it experienced at any age? Do you also find it enervating and frustrating? What are your coping mechanisms? |

I know exactly how to deal with this particular concern.
Reassure your friend that is 'natural' and then change the subject.
If you take this approach the issue completey goes away and is never mentioned again. |

My perimenopause started 10 years ago and the hot flushes were only occasional. Since menopause fully kicked in 4 years ago, so have the flushes and the huge array of other symptoms. Weirdly, my hot flushes stopped when I was having cancer treatment last year, but they're now back with a vengeance and on hot days like today, I literally feel like climbing into my freezer |

I'm always overheating and have tried to get tested for early menopause by GP but they couldn't be arsed. If this is actually just me and and the hot flushes get worse - I will not survive!!! |

your wildest dreams, |
I only have night sweats which are particularly frustrating because you don’t know until you wake up coz you’re dripping. It’s really not pleasant.
HRT seems to be working at a constant for now so I have a reprieve
For me, hormone balance is the only thing makes a difference. Try not to sweat it and be prepared to deal with it anytime anywhere. Stressing out doesn’t make it any easier. It’s just an added extra to deal with then |

I've had them for the past 21 years. Three days before my periods starts I get them, without fail! However since I've hit 40 I've more and more random ones between cycles and I get night sweats too.

This is a rather brave thing to do. I'm not feeling brave! |

Yeah, they're irritating, especially in warm/humid weather. My menopause is "artificial" but the symptoms are the same. I get sudden flushing and the sweats, for no apparent reason (I might just be sat still) and night sweats. I'm constantly putting the covers on/off in the night so it disturbs my sleep.
I acquired a lovely fan on my travels to España and I have it tucked into my wheelchair pouch all the time. I sat fanning myself in A&E for substantial periods last night/this morning because it was horrifically hot |

Question, how do you know that it's hot flushes and not the weather being ridiculously sweltering?? |

A surprising amount of women have told me their GP has said words to that effect.
It's not bravery on this occasion. It's my brain rebelling, because I have stopped vaping. |

"Hot water toilet flushes... Hmmm might be on to something there. "
Those ones that spray your bum with warm water and blow dry it, are fantastic! Had one in my hotel room in Spain and it was brilliant |

Because they happen in all weathers, all year round, not just summer. Hot flushes don't make me sweat...it's an inner heat which radiates out. Unlike night sweats and 'ridiculously sweltering' heat, which does make me drip with sweat |

Many women get them peri and post menopause. I certainly did until HRT sorted them out.
During the day they're a nuisance, at night when they disturb your sleep it's a real problem.

Absolutely hate them, awaiting referral as I'm apparently too young for premenopause, I feel minging 90% of the time, wake up soaked (sexy) and shivering because I'm sweating, it's not fun at all & has a huge impact on self esteem.

Peri and reducing my caffeine helped massivley, changing my diet more protein, low sugar less carbs (limit processed foods) and exercising regularly seems to help along with magnesium drink at night before bed. I only really get it now when I over indulge with alcohol on a night out which is rare. |

You're definitely not too young for perimenopause. I was from my early 30s but it only got really bad in my 40s. I definitely reccomend pushing for some checks, though it might not show up in bloods... mine never did. You just know when things aren't right.
Hope you get sorted.

Oh goodness, they're awful. And they seem to come at the most inopportune moments...usually when I'm trying to have a nice snuggle with himself, I start burning up and have to tell him not to touch me until it passes. Literally not to touch me, as in get over the other side of the bed
Night sweats are the worst though, they have a dramatic effect on my quality of sleep. I've found that taking a magnesium supplement calms them, but they still happen. |
