And many more injured by an attack by two bully dogs in North Wales. The brave farmer shot them both dead and the owner has been fined. Tom has said it once and he will say it again. These devil dogs are potentially lethal weapons in the wrong hands. Bring back the dog licence. Treat these breeds like shotgun licences. A police Inspector should visit the home annualy and if the owner is not fit to hold the licence then seize these dogs before it's too late. What's going on here guys. It's al over the news |

Hey Tom, on another post you were bemoaning the fact that some police forces can’t detect burglaries. You even asked if defunding them was the way forward.
Now you want them to check dog licences? I love it that you think the inspector should go too! How quaint, a bit like Dixon with rank.

Sadly not unusual and not limited to "dangerous breeds".People walk into someone else's fields and immediately let the dog loose, because "my dog won't blah blah blah",until it does.If it's not on a lead, you can't control it.A one of our Rural Crime Cops says "some people only learn when they are in the interview room under caution with their lawyer saying to them there is nothing I can do".It's no fun having to shoot a dog chasing/attacking livestock. Its sad that the dog has to pay the price for having an imbecile as an owner. |

"whilst dog attacks are terrible. this story seems a bit confused most sheep are not pregnant in September, the rams go in November & the ewes lamb easter onwards "
Some farmers, particularly hill farmers put the rams in August/September therefore they are in early pregnancy. |

Last year a local farmer had five sheep chased off a cliff edge, one fell to its death, four landed on a ledge and were rescued by the Fire Brigade. At that time he was averaging one dog incident per week. |

Many years ago I read a article that some dogs particularly Rottweiler’s can be more irritable and harder to control in warmer weather especially when very hot weather.I also read a article that there is no such thing as a bad dog just bad owners. As I am not a dog owner or a dog lover as I am not comfortable around them I couldn’t really make a comment with any knowledge.Perhaps some dog owners would like to share their knowledge. |

Had dogs most of my life and love them but I'd not have one of the bigger breeds purely based on potential. Yes, any dog can turn but it's a lot easier to get a smaller one under control than one of those beasts. |

Irresponsible dog owners won't stop being so because of a license which they will probably not comply with, have known owners with the American bully and the dogs were extremely well behaved..
Whilst any dog will cause livestock to bolt etc it's certainly the case that the larger breeds can cause more damage..

Training. The main thing is training. Proper training, not just positive reinforcement alone.
Like people, dogs are individuals and react differently to different things but overall you get some professional approved training on the majority of dogs and you have almost no worries.
The vast majority of dogs, regardless of a breed just want to please their family/pack/guardian. They want to work and have a purpose. It's a huge and amazing outlet for their focus and energy. Without it, it can turn in to aggression on a coiled spring of not channelled correctly.
Some scum use this and nurture the aggression energy. |

^ Absolutely this. I've experienced incidents with unruly German Shepherds who were kept in an outdoor pen, no exercise or stimulation, fed high days an holidays had managed to escape, I was terrified and i was attacked by one despite keeping calm and at a distance.
Move on some years later, we took in rescue GSDs, with a LOT of consistent training, they were brilliant dogs. My sister has had a few Doberman pinschers (think the omen movie and I was terrified). They turn out to be the biggest softies ever as did the rotties my eldest daughter has had. |

"What would happen in Spain "
Well Mr Piperson,
The two goat/sheep farms near my house have fenced in pens with big fuck off dogs of their own. If the animals go out, a shepherd is with them.
The Guardia Civil would be responsible for investigating it if it happened. Animal rights are quite strict here but I guess one sanction might be the destruction of a dangerous animal.

This happened in March. I'm guessing it's only just come to court. Incidentally though some farmers start lambing in December. |

Any dog could attack livestock, not just the bully breeds. For once I actually agree with Tom, bringing back dog licenses would solve a raft of problems, not just around livestock attacks |

I've seen the carnage that people's fluffy fur babies can cause. And it's not always down to big dogs either. Dogs from a local village chased our sheep into a freezing cold river. Having to haul out dead sheep was sheer misery. The problem was so bad at one point that we kids weren't allowed on the yard by ourselves for fear of these dogs. The police were involved eventually and dogs were shot. It's not the dogs fault it was their shitty owners. But as is always the case it's the innocent dogs and sheep that suffer. |

"How would a piece of paper from the post office have prevented this?
B"
It would just be a revenue raising exercise like the last time. Treat every dog as a potential lethal weapon. A policeman of rank no lower than Inspector should do a home visit and check if the property is suitable. Families with babies and very young children should not be allowed a vicious breed. If the police inspector is satisfied then the applicant should be interviewed by a board which would include a local councillor, church leader and RSPCA dog expert. If satisfied then the applicant should sit an exam like Part A of the driving test. Dog lessons would form part B and then and only then do we allow a man to have a dog |

Not every farmer does things the exact same way. Some farmers lamb as early as December/January. |

Ideally you’d need to prove you know how to basic train a dog, agree not to let your dog off lead around livestock and in other areas if your dog has poor recall (like one of mine). Any complaints about your dog result in a fine, on a sliding scale leading up to removal. Be good to include things like leaving your dog outside barking for hours on end too |

And they want to ban e-collars here. Wales has 4 times the amount of dog attacks on livestock and on people that the rest of Britain.
Obviously not everyone likes the use of e-collars but I’d rather see a well trained balanced dog over a dead dog. |

Which is lawful and the purpose of farming, letting dogs chase/injure kill is not.Massive difference. |

"Terrible that it will stop the farmer being able to drag the 3 month old lambs away from their mother to shoot in the head!!! "
That work is done at the slaughter house under strict procedures.Procedures that do not apply at a Halal slaughterhouse.A bolt in the head is instantaneous,a lamb having its throat cut to bleed out isn't. |

Unfortunately
Too Many people have dogs that they can’t or won’t control properly
I’ve seen it firsthand
And yes we shot the dogs
A license wouldn’t have stopped this
But maybe if it was made compulsory to register dogs at a cost
The dickheads that own the status dogs
Might just see them as the unnecessary accessory they are!!!
And yes
Please congratulate the farmer on shooting them!!!

Unfortunately this happens every year.
What we have to remember is it's not the dogs fault. It's the owners for not looking after their dogs properly!
No dog should be allowed to get in this situation.
Even the most playful of dog can quickly turn into a sheep killer.
The dog see the sheep running and think it's a game, before long natural instinct takes over and they attack as if they are hunting.
Again not the dogs fault it's the owners.
Any dog can turn seen first hand a Labrador do it!
Do not just the breeds you think might!
I doubt very much the farmer gets full compensation!

Never said that.just pointed out your incorrect statement that farmers shoot lambs.
By the way,not all lambs go for slaughter many are kept for next year for breeding. |

"Sheep in lamb , not actually lamb season tho . cub be insurance job .. "
The price of insurance for such a common risk? The cost of next year's premium if you make a claim? This is what it is,arseholes thinking they can do what they want on someone else's property and workplace,in this case using it as a dog toilet and exercise yard.
Yesterday two adults decided to walk into a nearby field of Cows and Calves, let their dogs off the leads, the Cows(mothers) did what all mothers do and protected their young. The two people were airlifted by two Air Ambulances to hospital with multiple fractures.Stupidity. |

why is it only the breeds that the media hates make the news ... there are alot of dog attacks that never make the news why oh because its not exciting when its a lab or spanial ...
we've alway had rescued bully breeds with the rspca alway problem dogs that have been owned by twats and thats the main problem its the twats not the dogs ... its the twats that have zero control that walk without leads ..its the twats that use dogs as a look at me im hard its alway the twats.....
ive always said bring back the dog licence and not how it used to be it should be breed specific with larger breeds costing more but also insurance for all dogs as a protection for the public just like a car...id also make it law that no one under 25 can own a dog
we took police advice who advised us to wear a pro cam on our dogs chest and on us when walking and we do ... we never let them off not because we cant control them but because other twats cant control there dogs we tell people not to pat them or stroke them people get pissy but at the end of the day they can piss off everything on cam most of the problems have been small breeds off the leads where there twat owners cant control ours just sit there even been bitten but wont react ... we just carmly tell people its recorded and walk on ...
we are very friendly with local farmers who allow us to let them off the leads in fields to play the have zero interest in the horse,s or cows and often the horses come over to investigate the only thing my dogs attack is the footballs they chase or pulling the duvet off at night they have zero interest in cats birds even a hedgehog one night in the garden they are not interested ... yet these were problem dogs who under there last owners trained to bite/mis behave ... there are never bad breeds its alway bad humans and sorry to say twats who walk there dogs off the lead...
big clampdown needed on breeding too its still out of hand ... oh and anyone whos thinking of a rescue dog give those bullys a chance they are so easy to re train and the most loveable dogs ever all they want to do is please you and love you... |
