Notting Hill carnival
Jump to: Newest in thread
As someone who lived in the area through 3 of these, i wonder what peoples opinions are on whether it should be allowed continue, have changes made to it etc.
I used to dread it, it made a mess of the area and people's properties and genuinely made the area unsafe. |

"It should not be allowed to be used as a pawn in the ongoing culture war that’s what I think "
Im not interested in all that. All i care about is the violence and shitty behaviour that goes on during it |

I think it's shocking all the violence that goes on mainly during the Monday, I watch the news coverage and looks so good on the Sunday/family day but then watch the Monday evening coverage and wow I wouldn't want to be there...way too much violence...the people that indulge in this are totally spoiling what the Carnival was first meant to be all about, and that's a shame. ![](/icons/s/neutral.gif) |

If you changed Notting Hill to Glastonbury you'd probably get a different response from some. There's more arrests per 100000 people at Glasto.
Prob 3 or 4 hundred thousand at Prem games every week, there'll be a sizable amount of people arrested.
People in very large groups are problematic |

True. But neither of those take place in small residential streets where people live.
As an fyi, i dont know about Glastonbury, but stabbings at the football rarely if ever happens |

For the record I don’t think it should be cancelled. In terms of moving it I understand how it could make it safer but feel like it takes away from its originality and from the specific resistance in a specific place. I’m not sure what the solution is. But I do think that reporting on carnival is deliberately different to reporting on say, festivals in general but ofc especially ones like Glastonbury where crime is rife. |

For me, and from professional experience its ALL abiutvthe violence. Stabbings, other weapon offences and robberies. Sometimes things are said exactly as they are meant without there being a hidden agenda. |

Have you been to Selhurst Park? Most of the clubs in London are in residential streets.

The OP when I read it suggested it was about the way it affects the local area in terms of mess and other disruption. Did mention being unsafe but not specifically anything so I just wanted clarity as the comments below were specifically more about things not specifically mentioned and not about things specifically mentioned. Don’t think there was a hidden agenda. Just want to be clear. |

I know that. But football doesnt involve hundreds of thousands of people congregating in a residential area for 2 days |

Spurs is on Tottenham high road and match days can be disruptive to travel and can make people feel unsafe |

It happens at all large gatherings. The knife crime element is because it’s in London which is the hub of knife crime and a whole separate issue |

I have not followed any news about it for very long time but I went a few times years back and I always had a great time. Great street food, dancing and strutting your stuff, colourful parades and people having fun. It must have all changed. ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

Getting to Millwall's old ground was a nightmare. Not so much a football ground, more a trap. An Everton fan got his face slashed open at Surrey Quays a few years ago in a residential road, my mate watched it out of his kitchen window |

Dear god. This mythical 'far right' again. Are we not allowed discuss important things now for fear it may offend someone? |

Who’s offended? And certainly no myth. There’s a whole section of the media/politics sphere that have latched onto to carnival as the latest thing to drive division. It’s so transparent it’s laughable when people can’t see it. |

The problem isn’t with carnival. There’s equal or greater problems at all large events. There’s a wider Societal problem. |

Funny how of all my friends that annually take part/attend carnival always seem to have a great time. Yes it gets bigger every year but i think it should remain in Notting Hill as that's where its originated. There used to be an unofficial estate party where I live. I would always get broken up by the police and there would be stories in the media about "gangs with machetes" running around when the real story was someone had a baseball bat. |

I've been a few times, when my children were younger. We enjoyed it thoroughly.
I've heard some remarks in recent times about various issues, which I have no experience of. I think it would be quite sad for it not to continue personally. |

"Who's going to the Carnival this coming weekend?"
, hoping to pop down for a bit on the Monday. Likely around the Pineapple Tribe system 🍍
Atmosphere is usually great during the day, although the middle of the carnival can get a bit crowded |
