Ok just chatting to a friend in the us who’s studying psychology and she is flummoxed at the fact that Sado Masochism is actually classed as a mental disorder.
What’s your take on that? |

Damn it. Got over depression but now I will speak to my therapist and see if he can diagnose me with sado masochism sub category switch. |

Diagnostic criteria requires that the patient experience distress, such as shame, guilt or anxiety related to sexual fantasy, urges or sexual experiences. Milder forms of masochism between consenting adults, sometimes also referred to as "BDSM" or dominant and submissive, are not classified as disorders by the DSM-5. |

Homosexuality was classified as such until recently.
Heterosexual white men, with little to no understanding or attempt at understanding, have often been quick to classify things as illnesses that aren’t or as not being real if they don’t accept them. |

Interesting... I know we share a lot across the pond but isn't it the ICD that the NHS uses on this side? There is a lot of overlap and influence between the DSM and ICD.
I just did a search and interesting article in the Northern Ireland Civil Service MH wellness site (NICSwell) has article that quotes Dutch Study that concludes people who go into BDSM with full understanding have better mental health that most.
I looked at BDSM-dates through a friend's profile and there are some seriously damaged people on there... |

I wouldn't know about the NHS, the therapists they gave me were not the right fit for me, so I went private. The DSM is the one held in the highest regard across most of the therapists I've talked to.
As a happy masochist, I'm inclined to agree that those who go into it with full understanding tend towards being more mentally healthy, but of course I would be inclined to think that.
There are many broken and lost people across all areas, but it is glaringly apparent in communities that are more open, because they're more open. |

My take is its in the DSM-5 classed as a neurological disorder, along with fetishm and anything BDSM.
But bear in mind who wrote this, middle class, white, 1st world male Doctors. |

Ok, the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) is an oft-criticised American publication (by the American Psychiatric Association, APA) and I encountered international differences in approach when I looked at Asperger's and Autism for someone a while ago.
The last edition DSM-5 came out in 2013, and it was revised as DSM-5-TSR in 2022 (which seems to happen as the new edition, ie DSM-6, approaches).
I can't see this area as having been changed in DSM-5-TSR (? ?), but maybe in DSM-6 it will be, along with Transvestitism - who knows.
The argument can always be that these are for the clear 'disorders' that are related to those things (which can happen for sure), but given that they are also simple (and common) sexual fetishes (or in the case of 'cross' dressing perhaps sexuality or a lack of social mores too - who's to say who dressed in what Mr Izzard) I am sure that the language surrounding all this can change.

I do think that a lot of people misunderstand the situation (including those in the mental health field) and they need some education on the subject |
