"Yes, having a sense of humour or telling a joke were banned in 2017. Apparently they're bringing back capital punishment for those who dare to laugh "
There are now zero comedians in the entire world due to snowflakes. Zero people are able to make jokes without offending someone. Crazy but true. |

Why are these threads always so general lol?
I don't really know what either terms actually mean, but by the end of these threads I tend on-balance to be happy-enough being the 'woke snowflake'!
And on-balance I rarely seem find the stuff we are 'supposed' to laugh at funny too!
Of course with examples none of the above could be true! pt |

I'm really not sure that's true, OP. Comedy seems as funny as ever to me, and still pushes boundaries as far as I can tell.
True, some things - like outright racism - are no longer tolerated/in vogue/on primetime TV but that can't be a bad thing, in my view. I'm sure you could still find comedy like that if you wanted to. |

I don’t laugh easily.
But then sometimes I scroll Instagram and there are like 5 funny animal reels in a row that really make me laugh to the point of getting tears in the eyes.
Life. What a rollercoaster of emotions journey! |

Yes but also no.
The thing is there is so much shit and subjective comedy out there it's hard to tell.
I like very little of the "offensive comedy" and I like very little of the "sensitive comedy" so both sides of the spectrum are shit from my pov. |

Possibility, but i think the world has become more desensitised to humour, like imagination. It is there but poeple nolonger know where or identify with it.
When you're brought, up with bless this house. Butterflies, 2.4 children to name a few the humour is there, Citizen Smith.
The forums are full of Wolfies always good for a laugh.
Been watching Star Trek - strange new worlds etc, they are all trying to be PC, non-binary, gender agnostic. They are still full of humour.
Think people relate to humour of their era or upbringing which makes it funny. But new generation of humour people of older generations can't relate so nolonger see the humour which is there but different
Oh PS i reposted, i used your instead you're- corrected |

I'm curious, is this thread actually about a brigade existing (ok, people you disagree with are a group of sorts) that actually causes other people to lose an ability? ie via gaining new sensibilities, nuanced humour perhaps or just general awareness?
Or are people just cheesed off because the likes Jim Davidson are not on mainstream telly any more (because they can't be remotely subtle about sensitive issues and instead just bang the big nail with the big hammer for a big guffaw all the time. Over and over and over again. Oh I'm dying oh I'm dying)?

I get what you’re saying there OP, but surely it’s down to individuals to laugh at or be amused by, the things that they find funny. If you stop laughing at things you find funny because someone else doesn’t find it funny or is offended by it, then that’s down to you.
My approach is, to laugh at the things I find funny and leave others to be as offended, or not, as they wish to be.
This is obviously reciprocal, I wouldn’t want to dictate to others what to find funny or unfunny. |

^ I was going to write something pretty much like this. So thanks, you’ve saved me the job - I’ll post this instead :
Humour is subjective isn’t it? One persons hilarious is another’s humourless - enjoy what you enjoy and let others enjoy what tickles their funny bone

I am largely with this.
Personally I find it incredibly sad that people might not laugh at something they find funny because of peer pressure.
I will say and laugh at what I like and I don’t really care whether anyone else has an issue with that. |

People are just more likely to tell you they don't find something funny as opposed to laughing along out of politeness
"
-No question. And Social Media has emboldened *everyone*, as you would expect.
I've said it before and I'll say it again... "You can't say anything any more!" is just the lazy half of a longer line. To complete it you must add, "without some annoying arsehole saying you shouldn't really say it!!"
People just want to mouth off all day without disagreement. What pisses me off is when they claim they can't do it. They'll moan all day long about 'not being allowed' to do exactly that.. mouth off all day long.
People have never had more freedoms to say whatever they damn want. Some people just can't tolerate disagreement.

I don't think so no.
I think humour is all about knowing your audience. If you find the right people, someone will always find it funny. But let's not sit here and pretend some jokes are not offensive, racist, sexist and just downright unpleasant. I've read jokes about babies being sexually abused and I do wonder who on earth finds that kind of shit funny?
Sometimes people are insensitive and brainless bellends.

Unfortunately lost it a long time ago to many snowflakes and woke people who complain about anything. Wonder what word they will try and ban next incase it offends someone somewhere.. Maybe happy birthday might get changed or happy Christmas. Time the woke and snowflakes all got together on there own island and let the rest of us have a bit of fun like the old days .. |

Can you give an example of something you think we should be able to laugh at but aren't allowed to?
Humour changes. That's life. If we are sympathetic to something now that we weren't 40 years ago and find jokes about it not funny any more, that's not necessarily a bad thing. |

I think it’s because we’ve started diagnosing anyone that gets giddy in school as having ADHD
Do you think Monty Python or Rik Mayall would have been famous if they’d have been given Ritalin?
People don’t need to be diagnosed or have their pigeon hole recognised as a protected characteristic. They need the confidence to know that it’s not just ok to to be weird, it’s actually kind of cool |

That's EXACTLY what is happening due to the easily offended and woke brigade.
Humour is dead .comedians being "cancelled "due to their controversial un PC material is common these days .
I'm old school ,and from a generation that wasn't offended by anything .I've seen Chubby Brown live over 30 times ,I've seen Jim Davidson, Bernard Manning , ans Charlie Williams (who was even called a racist event, even though he was a black comedian )live .

Everyone's sense of humour is different so just because someone doesn't find something funny, doesn't mean they are looking to be offended. Taking away people's right to make light heart of things, that's become a problem yes. |

People have always been offended by something.
Monty Python used to get abuse because they dressed as women, life of Brian was banned in many places for several reasons
George Carlin was arrested for his performance of the “seven words you can never use on television”.
The creators of South Park have said they’ve been expecting to be shut down since day 1
Even Ben Johnson’s play “the Isle of Dogs”, as far back as 1597, was considered too offensive and he was thrown in prison
I don’t think people being offended is enough to kill comedy, I just don’t think many comedians have the spine they need to be controversial anymore
Bring back back the ADHD lot, that’s what I say. Where’s this generations Jim Carey? Rick Mayall? We need you!

I don’t believe any single generation is particularly more prone to being offended than any other, but social media and the internet just makes everything more readily available.
Imagine it’s the 1980’s, Roy Chubby Brown and his ilk weren’t freely available to all at a single click on your phone. You had to either buy a ticket, or watch a VHS video - meaning you’re more likely to be a fan already and less likely to be offended.
There’s a ton of great comedy out there. Some of it still very much in the offensive mould, as it should be, because comedy is meant to push boundaries. It’s meant to be edgy.
However, people evolve, trends change, and in the 21st century, mother-in-law jokes and ‘look over your shoulder’ racist humour just doesn’t cut it these days. It’s low-brow, inane and just not funny.
Some old comedy still holds up well. The life of Brian is as funny today as it was upon its release. Alf Garnett is still a great character because the key element is that he’s the butt of the jokes - the miserable old racist fella who can’t accept a changing world. You’re meant to laugh AT Alf, not with him (some apparently never realised that)
What makes me laugh at the ‘everyone else is offended’ grumble so often heard, is that they’re demonstrating the same thing that they feel is occurring around them. They’re offended that the world is changing and they don’t like it.

It's a just a bit boring.
We used to be able to tell the context and intent behind words but now it's just you can't say that, can't say that, even if it's meant as a joke.
People take one joke shared on social media from a 90min set and just jump on it.
It's seriously boring. Just get on with your lives if you don't like a joke. |

Right on! I want to be able to make hurtful, misogynistic, homophobic, racist, xenophobic and discriminatory quips; regardless of what stereotypes or harmful prejudices it reinforces. And I think it's a scandal that I'm not allowed to hide my bigotry behind the justification that it's just a joke! It's woke, lefty political correctness gone mad! I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it!

Regarding the issue of Cancel Culture, you should watch the comedian Bill Burr in his Red Rocks special on Netflix.
He points out the hypocrisy between the calls to cancel work done by certain male actors for their misdeeds but the total silence around the actions of an extremely famous female fashion designer.
It's hilarious, insightful and highlights the selective nature of outrage.
Everyone should watch it but I know not everyone will agree, Mrs xxx |

In a simple answer, no.
Yes some are offended and make a big noise over it but that's all it is, just noise in the media. Nothing much changes the same comedians are out there making the same shows. You don't see Jimmy Carr for example experiencing a slump in sales and he can offend anyone anytime. You get publications like the Daily Fail trying to drum up support saying this has been banned, that has been complained about, but again nothing changes they just want to turn group against group is all. |

You proved your own point on the first one, it was removed from his record and no charges were pressed. If you look at Carr's social media and his shows he has made the same joke about getting cancelled for years, has it happened? No. And as for his fan base, my eldest son is a new fan so its not the same fan base, it ever expanding because here's the kicker, the world is not changing to what the scaremongering right want you to believe. Graham and Chubby didn't need to be moved on by force I agree, that's going to happen anyways as they are both dinosaurs anyways and have just recycled the same jokes over and over. |

I completely agree with this. Saw a 'comedian' (term used very loosely btw) while abroad recently who started his act by saying that he hates everyone and if they don't like his act and want to be babies about it they can fuck off and leave.
First 'joke' was how he felt about Chinese people. And his 'humour' was to pull his eyes back and mimick how he thinks they speak.
Guess what? I got up and left. It was disgusting, yet people who should have more common sense were rolling and belly laughing. And aside from it not being funny, it's behaviour that 7-year-olds engage in when they don't know any better. It's all been said before. We can still laugh. There's still great comics, and we can still push boundaries. But jokes that have a mean undertone underneath them are akin to bullies in the playground being so and then passing it off as banter.
It's not about not being able to laugh. We should just behave a little better sometimes. |

People taking offense easily is a problem.
In general, I am seeing more and more people who are just incapable of laughing. Very rarely they show a forced smile. It could be a symptom of a society with more and more people who get depressed. |

I agree that people could in general be more depressed these days, but are people really walking around who are incapable of laughing? It sounds like a line from the Eric Idle song (his rather-dated annoying cockney routine lol)
The whole weirdly-ironic thing to me is that this whole general 'complaint' seems to be about people who are actually very-needlessly taking offence when there is so little reason to! I find it so ironic (if not actually hypocritical) I really do.
You all get to do 99% if not 100% of what you want to do. You just don't get to watch repeats of On The Buses all night, because programmers have decided it's a bit old hat.

Theres some truth to that. It’s affected stand up comedy. Chris Rock stopped playing colleges in America as they were too offended. Respect for different cultures, genders etc is important though. Russell Peters is a good example of someone who gets away with playfully taking the p*ss out of everyone, but most people not as funny as him. |

'Joking around' is a lot different to telling jokes. They are not the limit of all humour! Jokes can also be self-depreciating. Who then is taking offence?
Remember Tommy Cooper?
Two Snowmen in a field...
One looks at the other...
Can you smell carrots?
And consider the Christian joke-pot, Tim Vine. He's memorised thousands I think.

"I joke around all day though with my family, friends and work colleagues, without even going near offensive topics
There’s no such thing as an inoffensive joke. Thomas Hardy said that all comedy is tragedy, if you only look deep enough
Tell me an inoffensive joke and prove me wrong
How does a group of penguins make a decision?"

"Yep we're not allowed to to be funny anymore due to to many snowflakes.
Can you give an example of something you think we should be able to laugh at but aren't allowed to?
Humour changes. That's life. If we are sympathetic to something now that we weren't 40 years ago and find jokes about it not funny any more, that's not necessarily a bad thing. "
Well all those who wanted to go and laugh at Graham Linehans show but weren’t allowed to as the theatre cancelled him because they didn’t like his humour. |

That probably should read "One says to the other..."! Cooper always told his jokes in the quickest jumpy lines.
It's the way you tell 'em.
Some of the sweetest people I know never stop laughing. It's such a myth that humour *has* to be cruel in some way!
Though I do lament those tragic snowmen. So cold, and soon to melt etc. Tragedy is not cruelty though. The human condition is ultimately tragic - so we laugh because it's all we can do. Why make it worse by pissing on other people whenever possible? pt |

Ha! Very good
Back on point though, if the only way we can tell a joke without offending anyone is to make a joke about something which can’t understand or complain if it did: then I think that speaks for itself

Its not the telling of a joke thats funny its the way its told, a joke is always at someones expense and somebody will always be offended but humour has to have no bounds otherwise whats the point |

Exactly. Humour is humanity’s way of exploring social boundaries for the better. If you think about where people are ticklish, it’s usually vulnerable places
We laugh because we’re letting someone go somewhere that we normally keep concealed without question. The same principle in both cases. Having ticklish areas is the body’s way of saying, “don’t do this all the time with everybody, but this person is alright with what they’re doing”
I do believe that Monty Python dressing as women normalised the concept at a time when people were still persecuted for doing the same. Seeing the funny side made the idea less threatening and more welcome in society in a way which debate wouldn’t have. Lots of other comics have done similar
For me, the only limit I tend to set is to try and always laugh with someone and not at them but even that rule needs to be bent sometimes
If we set laws around comedy now, aside from being an affront to free speech, it wouldn’t necessarily reflect values in the future. It would also definitely stifle progress |

A good example of a comedian being cancelled recently.
Chubby Brown ,who has sold out Sheffield City Hall in my home town for over 30 years had his booking cancelled this year ,even though it had sold out as usual ,and yes ,I had bought a ticket to see him in my home city as usual . I havnt missed a Chubby gig in Sheffield for the last 25 years.
His sold out gig was cancelled this year after a protest by a few left wing protesters complained to the Sheffield City Hall, and Sheffield Council, saying they were offended by his material .The end result was Sheffield City Hall cancelled his sell out gig ,giving the reason of "they are a diverse and inclusive organisation, and take on board the views of everyone ".
So ,let's get this right ,a comedian who has sold out every gig in Sheffield for the last 25 years is cancelled because of a few people who don't like his material .
Yes ,I admit Chubby Brown may not be to everyone's taste ,and I have no problem with that ,but to cancel someone who the venue knew is guaranteed to sell out every year ,and thus proving he is still a very popular comedian ,tells me that venues are running scared of a handful of people who don't like un PC comedians.
So now I have to travel with a couple of mates to see Chubby in another area this year.
It's all there with a quick Google search . |

I find people are getting less funny and more insulting. |

No comedy is insulting , it's comedy pure and simple .my view is ,if you don't like a certain type of comedy ,don't watch it ,but don't retell others it's wrong to laugh at that type of comedian . |

Don’t make the mistake of thinking those protesters were left wing. They might think they are, but there’s nothing liberal or democratic about what you just described. That’s right wing fascism all day long |

Comedy very often IS insulting, and for those who are the butt of the joke, it can be VERY offensive. Thankfully the days of the racist jokes that were common in every school playground in the 80's are truly over.
The world of comedy has progressed a long way from the need to be offensive, there is loads of very funny comedy about...

I didn’t tell anyone anything.
And comedy shouldn’t be insulting, some comedy is just unfunny. ..in my opinion.
The question was is the world losing its sense of humour.
I said, - some people are just insulting. I didn’t say comedians. |

I think people need to grow up and realise they are their own best editor. Don’t like a comedian? Don’t watch them. Flick channels, avoid their shows or whatever. But getting them cancelled is a double-edged sword. What happens when your favourite comic says something which offends someone? |

I agree that people are their own best editors. They should be their own best managers too... it's all out there to find.
Cancelling (which certainly does exist, both good and bad - and from 'both sides' too) is often just a simple act of commercial choice. Venues pulling out on acts has always happened, and often for moralistic reasons. We went through a phase where anything goes - and then the internet came along with all its many social dangers and we have collectively (well most of us anyway) realised we have to pull back a bit to give balance. Societies have ALWAYS ebbed and flowed in that way. As Gorgol Bordelo say, The 'Good old days' are all in the mind.

Free speech killed the right to free speech!!!
10 years ago we all going on about our right to be heard on any subject matter we choose simply because we HAVE an opinion.
Having an opinion doest make your opinion right or wrong, it just means you have one.
Now we too scared to voice our opinions for the fear of social media casting us as demons for not agreeing with the masses!
Future generations will crumble if world war 3 breaks out!!!
And that is just MY opinion! Hahaha |
