"I did terrible, I never reached A levels I got E'F & U in my GCSE's I wasn't in the best place to study back then. I went to collage many years later and redid them and gained my degree in my 30's with highest marks and even awarded for the marks. I may sound big headed but going from those shite results to some amazing ones I was hugely proud of myself, I do feel for those like me who's home environment isn't great and studying was near on impossible. Mrs " Totally agree home environment messed my school education. Being able to move away to study albeit in a relatively poor uni, allowed me to flourish.

"It was results day yesterday for all the young uns which always makes me think of my own (crappy) results! ( I did so badly I lost my place at the top notch Uni and had to settle for a rubbish one.) How did you get on? " I'd had my son just before my GCSE results came out, so did my A levels with a tiny baby in tow. 5 of 'em. It's his birthday today, actually (21). I had an offer at Cambridge to do veterinary medicine. I didn't get the grades I needed so I went to a different university in Manchester to study microbiology. On the day I received my A level results, I couldn't go to the college to collect at the normal time, because my son's father refused to move a family court hearing about his access. So, I went to court first, then college later and missed all of my friends. I received my results alone, with a teacher. There was a party that night at Mr KC's parent's house. Everyone else was happy and celebrating and I was just fed up and drained. I took myself out of bed at about 01:00 and drove myself home instead.

"It was results day yesterday for all the young uns which always makes me think of my own (crappy) results! ( I did so badly I lost my place at the top notch Uni and had to settle for a rubbish one.) How did you get on? " Which Universities are rubbish ?

"Didn’t do any, much to the lifelong disappointment of my parents (did later get a bachelors and then a masters degree but Twas the lack of a levels that still gets mentioned!) I’m In my 50s at the peak of my career internationally and still feel it in certain circles , if you didn't go to private school, get AAB or higher at A level and enter a Russel group uni at 18 you must be a failure." Are they circles you want to be in if they think like that?

How did you get on? Which Universities are rubbish ? " I went to Uni in another country in the late 80s so my comment isn't really relevant. Some see former polytechnics as "rubbish" here but they actually often have better facilities/teaching/support than traditional ones.

"I got 2 B’s and a D, which back in ‘81 wasn’t bad and got me my place at dental school in Newcastle, which I hated and ended up swapping to Manchester after a year to do biology instead. Solid choice. Can't picture you as a dentist!" Really? ‘Open big and wide now please!’

"Maths E Chemistry E General Studies E Engineering Science F Should have done a hell of a lot better but by the time I got that far I'd had enough of studying and just coasted it " It's a long time ago now. I held onto my failure for years, but it's pointless.

I can't really countenance that tbh.

"Did anyone in the CSE {pre GCSE} system ever get the opportunity to go to a University, I doubt it was considered a qualification worthy of acceptance, I doubt we even new of the existence of UNI's " My mother went as a mature student but she had a mix of O levels and CSEs. Her CSE Maths meant she had to take maths in addition to her degree.

"Flunked them badly, but worked my arse off and got a PhD in a Russell group uni. So it all worked out in the end. It really did! How did you find doing a PhD? I might just private message you depending on response. The best worst thing ever. It's amazing and really good for brains like mine. It's tough because it can be overwhelming. " My niece is about to start her PhD - I’m so proud of her x J x
