"I'm just struggling to understand why chess has a men/women separation in the first place " It’s because the men are so much better than the women it would just be humiliating for them to be constantly beaten. The women think they are looking at some kind of map and can never work out which way around the board goes.

"Not sure they've read the room, chess, darts, snooker & card games etc are all good sports where mens size & strength are no advantage. This does appear discrimination which is very much not the case when men who think they are women want to play in women's sport as not letting them is common sense due to advantage of physicality. *and because they are men with or without todger#" Discrimination against who? "There is a marked difference at the elite level of chess. Only one women, Judit Polgar has ever got to the top 10 of players in the history of the game. At the present time only the women’s world chess champion at no 89 is on the top 100 players in the world. No women has ever challenged for the World Title despite it being an open competition. This is the reason there is a Women’s World Championship and why trans women have been banned. For those wondering why there is such a difference, men tend to have better spatial awareness which is why there is a split in other sports such as darts, snooker, archery, shooting etc where you would have thought there shouldn’t be. " I don't see how anyone has an advantage in chess by their gender. Arm wrestling, sure. Chess? No. Spatial awareness is one thing, butI highly doubt that the difference is relevant or actually gender specific.

There have been more men in the history of the game and you can partly put it down to historical and cultural reasons for the disparity but you would have expected more than 1 woman to challenge the best male players in the history of the game. Do you play?

"I read a really fascinating article called "What’s behind the gender imbalance in top-level chess?" in The Conversation. Most chess events, as I understand it, are open. Why can't women have a few events to themselves? " At the elite level, where the difference becomes apparent, women have their own world championship and Olympiad. In Britain there is an open championship and a British Women’s championship. I’m sure there are splits in other countries too.

Their using a possible biological difference as the arguement in one situation and then ignoring the same biological arguement in the next." My understanding from the twitter thread is that most of what are believed to be Mens tournaments are actually open so it wouldn't matter, whereas women's tournaments are limited to women.

Women were completely barred from the next Olympic shooting competitions (1996) and only reinstated for Sydney 2000 in new gender segregated sections.

Both the IOC and ISU had been pushing for years prior for male and female events to encourage more female participation. The olympics in question you mentioned had virtually no females competing apart from zhang. So whilst the 1996 ban was unfortunate (they werent able to organise and encourage sufficient female competitors of a sufficient quality in time), it wasnt evidence of some mythical patriarchy that youd love it to be

That was sexist, but in the past, I hope. I can imagine shooting is a little easier for women because men are top heavy, while women's centre of gravity is around their hips. That makes shooting a little easier when standing up.

But not because of a physical disadvantage. If you got 100 players, 95 men and 5 women, of which 9 men are really good and 1 woman is really good, then you still have a top 10 of 9 men and not everyone can be nr1. 1/5 is 20%, 9/95 are roughly 9.5%. It's simple math.

"And because they are outnumbered, they probably also are a little intimidated and psychologically this might affect them to play less bold and more safe, which is not a very good tactic usually. And since some few women do beat the men, it is proven that there is no physical advantage. Otherwise no woman would have ever outplayed a man full stop." Using your maths there should be 9-10 women within the top 100. There is actually 1, the current women’s world champion at 89. Only 1 woman in the entire history of the game has come close to challenging the top men and that was Judit Polgar who reached no 8 in the world. Mental toughness is also a key asset but physical fitness is key too. If you read up on grandmaster games intense thinking for 4-5 hours takes a toll on the body.

"I think first we have to look at why there are specifically chess categories for women. Obviously there is no argument for physiology disadvantage. And likewise clearly none for mental disadvantage. So why is chess sometimes categorised by sex? The only reason I can see from my experiences playing competitive chess at school (which was mixed) is (at least in my experience) girls played the bottom boards that was based on their performance and wins. That's of course not to say that women are theoretically just as capable but this is just the way it often pans out for numerous reasons that are I suspect far more to do with society than natural ability. So if we women are not disadvantaged physically or mentally then we must say women are disadvantaged by society and the way it socialises. Factors like its still not viewed a girls game. It may not naturally appeal to many girls. They may lack female role models. They may lack encouragement and people having faith or investing time in them in this endeavour. And just statisticly there are far more males than females playing in competition so you will see very few feamles at top if mixed. So I suspect the sex category is like in many other sports their to allow women to compete against their peers at a top level rather than drowned out in the sea of men. So we're does this intersect with trans. Transwomen have generally grown up in the male world society assigned to them. They have had many of the advantages and socialisation that other male chess players have had. Birth sex and gender they are basically playing with the same societal advantages for the game that many males have had and many females have not. The reverse is true for Transmen. You can not overlook the effect society has in the formulative years of childhood and adolescence. For example I enjoy a very male hobby. No reason for this apart from society and socialisation I think. Women are so incredibly rare in the hobby. 9 out of 10 times at gatherings/conventions when I have encountered a woman it's been a transwoman not A CIS woman. Basically the vast majority of the times this hobby has been legacy of a transwomen growing up in a family/society that sees them as male. So to play devil's advocate I can see the reason for exclusion. Because the advantages in terms of chess success that are inherent to growing up in a male world are also bestowed onto many transwomen. So to play in the female game would give instant advantage. Personally though I would just prefer to see a mixed game. Although I understand that the majority of female players would not be represented in the higher levels. In a game when physiology and mental capacity is not a problem yet there is still a sex device it must be society that is the problem. Therefore it society's attitudes we need to address. Which is not easy and never fast." Speed chess?

However, the Soviet Union looked at chess as a way to establish their superiority over the west in the Cold War and put a huge amount of resources into chess at all levels. They held the men’s and women’s world championships for many years. Even with this advantage the top soviet women would have been unable to compete at the top level of the men’s championship.

I like in the country where I work women feel safe abs if they choose to can ride pink class on trains and pink Ubers. Let trans people compete as trans people " You really don't see the problems for women in the UAE, do you? The segregation is not for safety.

"I mean there is a very simple solution to all of this. Ban women from playing chess! I think we should ban men. Seems fair to me. Yeah but I said it first, so priority init. Men comes before women in the alphabet, so they should be banned first " Ah, but female comes before male Seriously, I enjoy chess - it's one of the few pastimes we do where I win more often. And poker Bess x

The reality over there is normality as we know it, minus the scumbag crime" All the students we care for must be lying then For someone who implicitly said they didn't want to interact with me, you're doing a great job of interacting. The facts are that Emirati women live under male guardianship laws and they do not have full and free participation in society. Anyone who says the opposite is not telling the truth. Its written into the law there. "Women are unequal to men under the UAE law. Article 72 of the Law on Personal Status allows judges to determine if it is permissible for a married woman to leave the house and to work. Unlike the case of children of Emirati fathers, Emirati citizenship is not transmitted automatically to the children of Emirati women. Some Emirati laws have been amended in women's favor. In 2016, the clause in Article 53.1 of the Penal Code recognizing that a husband has the right to discipline his wife was removed. Also, a line in Article 56.1 of the Law on Personal Status stating that a husband has the right to courteous obedience from his wife was removed in 2019. In 2020, Article 334 of the Penal Code punishing honor killings by a little as one month in jail was annulled. However, families of honor killing victims can waive their right to have the murderer punished in return for blood money (or none) in which case the murderer will be punished by 7 years. Under Article 9 (1) of the Federal Decree-Law No.10 of 2019 concerning Protection from Domestic Violence, anyone found guilty of domestic violence will face a maximum of six months in prison and/or a fine of up to Dh5,000 (about $1361). The law covers physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse. Some of the women's rights under the Personal Status Law require the consent of a male guardian, who is often the husband or a male family member. In Sep. 2020, the updated UAE Labour Law 8/1980 took effect, requiring equal pay for men and women who perform the same work or work of equal value. Under Emirati law, women are free to choose their jobs, although employers can ask for permission from a male guardian. Pregnant women working in the private sector are entitled to 45 paid scheduled days of maternity leave. After returning to work, the Emirati law allows mothers an extra hour off per day for breastfeeding. The UAE amended in Nov. 2020 Article 356 of the Penal Code, removing language that was used to punish consensual sex outside of marriage, but marriage certificates continue to be a requirement for obtaining birth certificates, which may affect migrant women and leave their children undocumented. Women in the UAE are free to own property and acquire a mortgage, and a third (30%) of all Dubai real estate is owned by women."
