Goodness me, that’s a lot of money.

Whilst revenge porn is 100% not acceptable, what’s the chances of the money ever being awarded.

Read on the BBC news.

It seems like an impossible and unrealistic amount of money unless the person is incredibly wealthy.

Having said that hurting the people who do this in the pocket might be an excellent deterrent

It might be coming from the company that runs the site (or multiple companies running multiple sites) and it gets paid in installments. Then again saying that, not sure how it's the companies responsibility to pay it when they wouldn't know it was revenge porn. If it were a billionaire who uploaded the revenge porn, sounds like a pretty stupid thing to do for someone with that kind of money

Have seen many stories where those sites are informed pictures or videos are revenge porn but are very slow on taking them down or ensuring they stay down.

Depends what happened; a cheeky bum pic isn't exactly the works but explicit and stalking measures are not acceptable. It lays down a marker

And pretty depressing to read that "after receiving little assistance from local police she turned to a civil attorney."

Definitely sounds like a great idea for getting rich quick, if any women don't mind having hundreds of thousands of horny men wanking over their sex videos for millions or billions of pounds...

I'm joking of course it's still unacceptable

Police are useless, trust me they care more about making an example out of people than helping victims

Did you see the interview with Gina Martin who campaigned for the Voyeurism Act? She snatched the phone from the guy who took a picture up her skirt and ran to the police who said basically because she had knickers on it was ok.

Yeah.

I don't know if it was because legally it was ok or that was their opinion. I'm guessing that Christopher Chope aside, it was a legal issue hence her campaign for the Voyeurism Act

Remarks like that are one of the reasons I don't like sending naked photos to anyone.

I wouldn't want any part of my body shared without my consent.

Whaley Bridge,Nr Buxton,

America is full of people awarded huge sums.Overturned or greatly reduced on appeal, held up for years in litigation. The only winners are the lawyers.

I believe it’s an amount which is never actually expected to be paid.

I did my dissertation on revenge porn a couple of years ago. This is a huge settlement and the victim is unlikely to ever get the full amount. Is does however set a very bold marker and example that this crime does (usually) and will be taken seriously, as it should be.

For the supposedly jokey comments about it being a good way to make money, victims of revenge porn have ended their lives, lost jobs, family members and friends. It really is a life-destroying crime and doesn’t deserve taking the piss out of.

A subject that’s actually pretty close to my heart as years ago I was betrayed by an ex over some material we had made together, she was threatening to post on social media after I ended our relationship as a way to try and get me back, It did get resolved via the police but was a awful period of my life and I made to feel like I was overreacting by the first officer that visited me however that changed when I gave him a piece of my mind and put in a complaint, she didn’t face any chargers though I always felt it would be different if the role was reversed and definitely would be a different story these days as it was quite a few years ago now

It’s definitely seen as a gender specific crime unfortunately when it really shouldn’t be!

She won’t get anywhere near that because Texas has a cap on monetary legal awards… so the 1.2 billion is symbolic I think it’s more likely in the 50 million range I think

Nowhere

The money is compensatory and whilst significant it’s insignificant in the main ( my point if view) where are the punitive actions for doing it in the first place. ? Compensation aside - is the twat going to now face charges - im sure 50 million will sting even a billionaire but the real thing that would have an affect would be time spent in prison. Someone also highlighted an upskirt situation… so someone can take a picture of an area of a woman’s body (in this example) where she could reasonably expect a right to some form of privacy - and police say ohhh she had knickers on - no harm no foul? In what version of reality is that the decision?? On the plus side they didn’t charge her with the theft of the upskirters phone which is where inaas expecting that to go

Just read the article.. 200 million for the actual act and 1 billion for the distress caused

Interesting that she and her lawyers had only asked for 100 million (I say only) but the jury gave her that much!

I would need to check Texas law.. but I think its either 2x actual awards up to the cap level
