Question for men who don a suit

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

So I've been going through some tough times lately, drastically changing who I am to be a better person, a lot of neurological gymnastics to rewire my fucked up broken ass brain.

One thing on the list of changes is a new wardrobe, they say a new look can bring out a new you. So I'm doing some clothes shopping and will eventually throw out all of the old stuff.

I've really been into fashion and the aesthetics of clothing for a few years now, and I want to have a more refined classy look, some clothes are already being delivered.

My questions for you suit enthusiasts, how do you get your high quality suits and what do you look for? Should I invest in tailor made shirts, waist coats and breasted jackets? Is it worth it? Can I achieve a similar aesthetic simply shopping online and what are the best places for online shopping? Slacks really aren't my thing though, I still want to have a classy look with an alternative flair like a pair of slim fit jeans with zips and buckles

Vintage shops, charity shops in posh areas, and aim for early Connery era Bond.

The grey suit, white shirt, black knitted tie combo from Dr No. For example.

Don’t go for a tailored suit, too expensive. I would go to a shopping village like Bicester village and get a decent make for a good price. Prob pick something decent up for £250-300.

Dressing up jeans with a tailored slim fit jacket if you’re the right shape… a black slim fit jacket with a tailored black shirt can really look sharp - you essentially have to put it on and think . I look bloody good in this or you will constantly be checking and fidgeting because you wont settle. It has to show who you are… lots of places do clearance or outlet items if you’re on a budget. If you’re lucky yo not be a popular size you can pick up a Boss tailored suit jacket for about £40 or £ 50 instead of 220

Hope this helps

Good idea yeah I forgot about charity shops in posh areas, but I couldn't go for the bond look and great only suits me when mixed with colour, I have a grey stitched pattern button shirt that I'm hoping will look good with the navy and black floral waistcoat

The kind of aesthetic that appeals to me the most is a mix of neo-modern/alternative/steampunk vibe. I'm also looking at a brass pocket watch and chain to accompany a waistcoat

I have yet another suit occasion later this week… no, not court appearance you fuckers

Any hoo, I have quite a few suits from previous special events but I’ve just been through them all.

Pastel blue, couple of black, white and an olive green plus a very old navy blue.

Easy decision, only the navy blue trousers fit :

as long as I don’t sit down

Yeah I'm pretty slender so I have to shop small otherwise clothes especially a suit will look too frumpy on me, tight is right.

I'd only wear a breasted jacket for the most formal of occasions unless I can find one that has the right shape and style which I can pull off in more casual settings. I'm extremely particular about small details when it comes to aesthetics.

Make the most of the online sales when they arrive and don't be put off by outlet shopping.

I have quite an unusual dress style but will never be seen out socially or on a fab meet (which is rare) without a minimum of shirt and a smart jacket, maybe a waistcoat too.

I have picked up some bold statement items which I carry off through sheer confidence. When people get over the initial shock, I generally get complimented for my bold choice.

I'm a bit disappointed with the current trend for grey and blue suits with subtle tartanesque patterns. Be bold. Be confident. Find what works for you and wear it with pride. You'll feel better for it.

For me, the thing that makes a suit look good is the fit. A few of the chaps I work with will buy high street suits (not cheap cheap ones, the material of those is not usually up to much) and they then get them tailored to fit...lovely suits that fit perfectly for a lot less than a tailor made one.

That's what I'm hoping for, and absolutely when it comes to an outfit a lot of it is how the person wears it, collars lifted up, sleeves rolled up, unconventional styles etc. and then of course the confidence to pull it off

Best to also invest in decent coat hangers. And find somewhere that you can get alterations done who get what you are trying to achieve. A suit jacket with sleeves that drape over your hands is a crime.

I get suits from Charles Tyrwhitt who do good suits and give excellent service. They do good shirts etc too. The company “Pink” do amazing shirts but they are quite pricey at the better part of £100 per shirt. I say the rule of thumb is to buy the best quality you can afford and just look after it so what you buy can last.

I’ve never had much luck with buying online, shirts you occasionally get lucky with but a suit is a lot of money to commit unless you know you’ll get it altered to fit you.

I found that going to shops is best, but go with someone else who won’t focus on the drawbacks you see in your body shape, instead they’ll dress you to make the most of what you have.

Pushing the boundaries a bit when shopping is almost always a good thing. Enjoy yourself!

Try a few different shops / suppliers and you may find one that particularly fits you (size, shape, proportions, etc), which then gives you a good starting point. It's then up to you to put it together and look dapper!

See if you've got a branch of somewhere like Slater's Menswear nearby and ask one of their staff to make some suggestions around your ideas. They're very good at sizing you up and picking items to suit and flatter, including formal wear, suits and more casual stuff. That's how Mr KC started in suits and now he loves wearing good tailoring.

Next do some nice suits and cheap in sale, order in a couple of different sizes if shopping online and then do the collection return for size you don't want to keep.

There's no need to spend crazy money as long as they're well put together.

I got a nice blazer from superdry of all places that looks great with some jeans.

I would go shopping with someone else if I knew anyone to go with

I don't really see the drawbacks in my body though, what I really see is drawbacks in the clothes, as like I said I'm extremely particular with aesthetic details. I'm very picky about the clothes aesthetics

You have to be careful as a lot of these outlets have some strange sizes available. If your average size and height your screwed

You can get lucky though, I agree, taylorwd is a waste of time and money, that 99% of people won't even notice.

OP, if you're on the lookout for ideas, still can't go wrong with following GQ or Esquire - they'll recommend stockists etc.

I personally wouldn't buy a suit online (unless it was an exact one I'd had before) as they're just too unpredictable. As others have said, fit is the most important thing to me, and I'd also personally try to stick to wool as I find man-made fabrics can look shiny, but it's all personal preference. Not sure on your budget, but in terms of High Street, both Zara and Massimo Dutti do some really nice stuff that's good value...

I only wear one for work, I have ten. All from Moss and Co tailors, very good prices and have all stood the test of time.

Shirts I get off the peg tailored Next shirts, again very hard wearing and value.

I know what style and fit I'm going for, but it's hard deciding whether its better to go bespoke, buy from outlets and egt it fitted, which outlets offer the best products for value

I'm mostly interested in cotton or linen, no synthetics, but not sure about suit jackets in terms of what the best material is for aesthetics and blue for money, definitely not wool though

Fit is everything in a suit.

A properly tailored suit that is done well will set you back a fair bit. You can achieve an excellent fit/look with a cheaper suit that is well adjusted.

What's your budget?

Maximum is £100 for any item of clothing

Though if I were to get something bespoke and tailored I wouldn't mind paying a few hundred for it I'm able to dictate exactly how I want something to look, like a button shirt with tux collar, gusset hem, French collars, slim fit and 100% cotton

Oh, I love a good suit. Used to wear them all the time. My advice is simple: Fit is more important than anything else, most people won't see a difference and wearing makes no differenc either if the fit is great, you will look great.

That being said, a nice quality suit will fall a little better and feel a little better on your fingers, they also have less standard plain colours and more interesting patterns and weaving techniques.

The only really expensive thing you should buy, are good shoes and belts.

Little accessoires like tie clips, cufflinks, handkerchiefs for oyur pocket and little decorative pins for your rever are going to make your suit a lot more interesting.

At the end though, you shouldn't wear full on suits all the time, it's a little too formal for going out and stuff. Buy chinos, blazers, nice shirts and go for a business casual look.

Fit and colour matching make the biggest impact on your looks.

I've got my own style.

Waistcoats are my thing. 120+ and counting.

Generally white shirt (normal or wing collar), and either tie, bow tie or cravat. same style 24/7.

Whether going out, shopping, dog walking or gardening.

I wake up in the morning, throw on some clothes and away I go.

either that or I am naked.

I’m going to go against the grain here.

Go and get a tailored blazer/jacket (if you’re hung up on a suit then go for that instead) but get it made to measure. You will not get the same fit or look off the peg as a made to measure.

It’s an investment and you will get your money’s worth from it.

A good jacket will be £700-£2,000, get some really nice shoes too, Loake, Jeffery West, etc. then you can wear any jeans and shirt or trousers and t-shirt combo and you’ll look amazing.

The jacket will last you for years and it will be your unique style, pick the cloth, buttons, lining, finishes, fit, a good tailor won’t let you go down the wrong path.

Once you get over the cost you can invest in shirts too.

You will stand out from the crowd.

Before I get slaughtered for suggesting this amount on clothing, a jacket that lasts years and fits you is better than 10 cheap ones from the high street and if you’ve ever been to northern Italy, everyone looks so smart and well groomed, because they take this approach, guys will save up two months wages for a suit.

Check out your local British bar/restaurant/high street and compare to our European friends.

It doesn’t take much to make yourself look better than average.

Would take me more than a couple to save up for a jacket that costs that much, I'd probably be better of going for a good well made brand that isn't too costly and have it fitted instead.

But I do agree the Italians take their lifestyles seriously, I love that I'm part Italian

Worthing

I've always bought suits locally rather than online as I'd like to try them on. Never pay over the odds for one, just get the best you can afford which feels and looks good. Don't forget the shoes to match.

My advice is to get measured properly first. Knowing your exact measurements is important in how you wear a suit. Many tailors will offer a measuring service, once you have those measurements you can go to any high street retailer and get a suit that’s near enough and then have it adjusted.

Think about material and timeless style , a suit should be forever.

Linen with a bit of merino wool is perfect for hot summer and doesn’t crease. You can’t go wrong with Italian design.

Whatever you do , don’t go to Next.

Loakes are very old school , I don’t think have kept up with footwear technology tbh,

Although I get compliments from men here when I wear them , especially designers they love English hand made shoes, my feet are always sore and hot by the afternoon!

Had to look up Loakes, all I can say is eww

Yeah I won't be wearing anything like that on my feet

I got a pair of DC shoes high top boots, black suede, they go really well with a pair of trousers with zips and buckles, which I'm hoping will go well with a shirt and waistcoat combo with some accessories. Id rather go for alternative casual shoes than err... Grandad shoes

Find something you like then search on vinted.

After suit shopping with my son recently I probably wouldn't advise buying anything like a suit without getting properly measured and trying on.

"Don’t go for a tailored suit, too expensive. I would go to a shopping village like Bicester village and get a decent make for a good price. Prob pick something decent up for £250-300."

I’ve and good results at Bicester. Trying stuff on is hugely important, as sizes and fits very so much.

I also went into one shop in Bicester and bloke walks up to me in a suit, skin-tight trousers 6 inches above his sockless shoes, a jacket that barely reached his waist was 6 inches away from being able to button it, and cuffs half way up his forearm. “Can I help you “ he asks. No, probably not

In the days when I had to wear a suit in the office. I’d buy 2 pairs of trousers as the jacket was only worn to/from the office, and paid more attention to getting good shirts, shoes and ties, as they stand out more.
