A homeless man

I have done a good turn today and spent some time talking to him. Gave him some change. He was very grateful for me taking some time out of my day to talk to him. Feel really quite good about myself. Has anyone else done any good deeds today

Good for you.

I always feel torn. Half of me says to do what you did, and the other half says any money given may be spent on addictions plus I feel nervous being a woman alone. Is that silly?

I do a standing order for Shelter, makes me feel better passing people by but only a little. Can't imagine what life must be like to live on the streets. The stats on how many homeless people have mental issues is frightening.

most homeless people stand in busy places to get as much attention as possible when 'begging', i doubt any of them would hurt you infront other other people

These days a lot of 'homeless' are in the situation due to sheer bad luck in their lives.

There but for the grace of god etc.

So out of interest what did you say to the copper? Think I'd have been tempted to tell him to do one.

I used to work with the.homeless and have a huge amount of sympathy for them. I always try to give them a bit of money and yes, it probably would get spent on drugs or alcohol.

But tbh if i were a rough sleeper i would need something to help me through.

The horror stories i have heard of violence towards them makes my blood run cold. They too are people with thoughts and feelings and deserve to be treated as such!

Hug the homeless (if they want one!)

If only i could win the lottery .....

I felt sorry for a Big Issue seller and decided to get a meal deal out of tesco for him. By the time I came out he had gone. I only had to walk a further 10 mins until I found another woman selling the mag so I gave it to her. I made out she was doing me a favour as I didn't feel well and it was a shame for it to go to waste.

The other thing that stops me helping is what I heard in media about people pretending to be homeless but are just daytime beggars.

I live in rural location so don't see this day in day out to be savvy enough to spot the difference.

That's why I do Shelter, it isn't perfect but hopefully the cash is channelled to those that need it, rather than those who are posing as homeless.

I tend to give them food as I'm passing, never money.

I had a friend that was homeless where I used to live, and he freely admitted that any money he got was used for drugs. So I give them food, or a hot drink.

The land of grey peas and bacon

There are scammers and there are the genuine ones... I have worked in homelessness for the past 10 years.. I have also been a rough sleeper

If ever approached by a homeless person i always say i will take em for a brew it gets em out of cold for while and gives them food.

Way i see it is under different circumstances anyone could be homeless and like to think soneone would help.

it also depends on the area you in

There are loads of homeless people in birmingham and if you walk thro the city centre at night and gave to everyone who stopped you, you be nipping to the cash point twice to top your purse up, so with the best of intentions you really cant give to all of them if you live in a high homeless area

Seen a homeless guy in crewe once.. Me and my mate was sat in the sun chilling with a few beers waiting for our next train to Derby.. This homeless guy went straight to the ashtray on the wall and took out a few nubs..

He looked in out direction a seen us both smoke.and casually walked over.. I was suprused but all he wanted was a light.. But i kindly offered him a full cig and a light..

He was really greatful.. Morning cig is always the best..

But to be honest the homeless system is seriously lacking.. I was walking down the street a few days ago and noticed a man asleep on the doorway wrapped in a blanket.. On closer inspection he was in a wheel chair..

Dont know if he was a fake or not but that really made me think about how much people take for granted..

The man told me his name and the story he told me reminded me of me a month ago when I was thrown out. He lost his place putting his girl friend first and was paying her rent and not paying his own. They split up and he lost his home. He was sofa surfing for a year then ended up on the streets. We had quite a chat

Used to walk through this underpass to shopping precinct paying cheques in for my business.there was a homeless guy each time he used to ask for any change, I always replied CSA pal £500 a month have you got any spare change for me !

One sat Lou was with me and she took sympathy, whilst I was in bank she bought a coffee and a kit Kat, when we returned she handed it to him,

There was no thank you and as we walked off he shouted is there any sugar in it !!!!!!!!!

I used to employ a homeless guy called Stuart when I worked security in bolton.

Bought him breakfast & a brew 4 mornings a week for intel on the local shoplifters.

Eventually the town centre security manager got him help with housing and got him a part time job.

He now works security for the council.

The wife used to work for the council over a period of time she got to know a homeless bloke, she used to buy him a bag of chips once or twice a week and when it got cold she gave him an old sleeping bag.

It's pure luck that I've never been homeless I suppose. Every one on this thread that has done something deserves our respect.
