Having a discussion with someone who said they are the same made me think that would be insane. So just curious |

If I lived in the UK i’d be proactively not paying my utility bills! A change of government is undoubtedly coming and at some point Labour will offer rebates or some such policy to placate their base!
Before the cascade of “they’ll arrest you” or “you’ll have the bailiffs at the door”, both of those are rhetorics the utility companies and press will have you believe; don’t pay and absolutely nothing will happen other than more bills in the post of different colours and letters to “help you pay”
You’d get a least a year if not more before anybody would bat an eyelid!
Then tell them you can only afford £5 a week off the debt, they’ll happily take it !!
Oh and it doesn’t impact your credit profile either unless you try and change suppliers; utility companies don’t offer credit accounts, they charge in arrears unless it’s a PAYG.
I’ve been trying to get my pensioner mother off an electric PAYG account for over a year, they won’t budge and they know I know why!! |

Most people just pay because they don’t understand it . Shell are the easiest I’ve had over £500 credits for simply not paying them anything. Right now with instant access paying 5% they are effectively paying you not to pay your gas bill! |

If you don't pay your wayer bill, they won't cut you off but it will affect your credit rating very soon after not paying. Electricity/gas if you don't pay and have a smart meter you'll get put on prepayment.
Prices vary for gas/electric around the country even with same supplier because of the different distances it has to travel to get to your house. |

Water is. Electricity used to be prior to the market being opened, now the suppliers are all national players. Gas used to be all British Gas but again since competition its national players. |

I live near some social tenants who pay rent plus a fixed £100 for water, gas, electricity so I can see how it might get grouped together. |

You’re correct, water company won’t switch you off because the government won’t let them, as for impacting your credit rating I’m afraid you’re ill informed; check your credit rating and see where you paying your water bill on time is listed, you’ll find it isn’t, anywhere!
As for prepayment meters, utility companies need a warrant to enter your premises, they can’t switch you off or switch you over remotely!
Government have halted all warrant applications!

To be fair the whole energy sector is a right messed up system. You have the sector that produces the energy and makes profits. Then you have the sector responsible for the distribution of energy infrastructure making profits. Then finally you have the sector that sell it to you and me under numerous commercial brands and makes profits. Its a bizarre system that isn't in wide spread use around most of the developed world (for good reason). It gives the appearance of a competitive free market that was advertised to reduce costs the to the consumer. But the reality is it's actually resulted in a lot higher costs passed to the consumer and tax payer since privatisation. Which when you see the system and how its run beyond the public interface is no suprise really. It's has also seen so much contingency infrastructure once own and paid for by the tax payer asset striped by these companies for easy cash such as gas storage sites.
Basically the privatisation of our energy system was an act of fraud. Sold to this Nation as a great way to reduce the average person's cost. But in really it was the theft of our infrastructure into the hands of leaches who continue to grow fat off the British consumer and tax payer. |

Dude I have checked my credit report and there it is...it may depend on which credit agency you're checking and which water company you're with but its there because my water compaby made a mistake and I had to get them to rectify it.
You don't need a warrant to switch over a smart meter to prepayment can be done with the press of a button by someone in an office.
Doesn't bother me particularly whether folk take your advice or not. I won't be. |

Actual very single public sector that have been privatised is a scam actually is the biggest scam in the called modern era . The profits are high, always scure , and if something goes wrong governments always cover their backs because in reality the energy sector is in the hands of the political monopoly hiden by the word privatisation , this happens in every single country |

Gas and electricity is distributed centrally but metered by different suppliers, which customers can (in theory) choose. Water is supplied by regional private water companies in a totally competition free environment. You can't change your water supplier or seek a more competitive price. |
