"Bon Jovi at the Brighton Centre. It was their first gig in the uk as support to Kiss. Probably only support band I've seen where you got the feeling they would be huge." I was at that gig and Bon Jovi were certainly the best that night |

"Fun lovin criminals at a uni venue at the height of their reign "
Saw them in a local pub at around the same time, just 200 capacity, fantastic gig.
Also seen The Killers in a 7000 person venue, which felt pretty intimate for a massive stadium band

Another one I forgot about, Magnum in a pub in Wolverhampton, a charity gig just before (or maybe after) 'On a Storyteller's Night' was released.

"Do the likes of Rock City, DeMontfort Hall and various Odeon size theatres really count as 'small' venues?"

"If l remember the downstairs bar at rock city, the rig, didnt have a bar ,had to go upstairs , the 'stage' was 6 inch high."
That's a proper small venue. I've seen some brilliant bands in there (interviewed a few in the changing rooms down there too). |

"Do the likes of Rock City, DeMontfort Hall and various Odeon size theatres really count as 'small' venues?course they do "
I'd say not, to be honest. They were just standard venues when bands used to do 'proper' tours. |

Please feel free to take your pick as to which you consider is the "biggest" of these...
Robert Plant in a marquee in Cambridge to about 20 or so of us.
Green Day in a snooker club in Huddersfield.
Nirvana in a pub in Leeds. They were just the support band that night too.
Joan Baez in a small tent with about a dozen of us.
My mate's unknown band playing a pub in Leeds but their support bands that night were 10,000 Things who's singer Sam Riley went on to be a Hollywood film star and opening up that evening were the Kaiser Chiefs.
The Sisters of Mercy playing a few secret warm up shows in various pubs in Leeds.
Oh and I saw a band called The Cockroaches in a tiny club in Paris. They usually use their more well known alias of The Rolling Stones when they play 0ther (much larger) venues.

I saw The Kooks, Libertines, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs in tiny venues supporting others, I think pretty much all before they were signed or released a song so I didn’t know anything much about them at the time.
Black Keys in Rescue Rooms in Nottingham and Confidence Man in Stealth was pretty tiny too given what they play now.
Loads at Rock City and O2 venues. Yeah they have smaller rooms, the big room in Rock City for example is Comparatively huge. |

Pro tip for seeing artists in small venues - jump on a flight and head to Amsterdam! I lived there for a good few years and saw a lot of relatively big British bands play in small venues as they weren’t big enough in The Netherlands to sell out bigger gigs, so over a few years at a 600 odd capacity venue I’ve seen…
Muse
Biffy Clyro
Chemical Brothers
Orbital
Pendulum
Chase & Status
Stone Roses
Plus loads of other bands you would probably say are a bit smaller, all in a tiny venue with a load of ex pats going a bit crazy!
Also, you get to fall out of there and experience the rest of Amsterdam…..so a win all round!x

"Hothouse Flowers in a local pub about 5 years ago with only 40 people there.
That's criminal! I hope that's not their regular audience now. "
No they are still playing to massive audiences.
It was a one off and almost a practice gig before they went on tour that year.
It wasn't very well advertised which I think was deliberate and I only heard about it that morning. Tickets were only a tenner. |
