About 4.5 billion years ago a large cloud of dust and gas coalesced and eventually reached the point where it collapsed due to gravitational attraction resulting in immense heat. As the protostar got hotter and hotter this was eventually sufficient to start off a process of fusion and there you have it, a shiny new star.
