I have to give a talk later I have some ideas about it often being very nonlinear, how you can deal with that but I’d be interested in nuggets of wisdom or different perspectives from others who’ve seen successes and how it came about ,

Over the years I've worked with plenty of guys who have the mantra of I'm only paid from the neck down or I'm not paid enough do that, always in a hurry to pack up and be out the gate at finish time you get the drift!

Where as If you are eager and curious and show an interest and try to learn your supervisors will come to depend on you.

Obviously some jobs maybe different and monotonous or plain boring.

If you want a career you need to work out where the value is created in a business and how your skills can grow that value.

If you just want a job then you don’t need to worry about that but if you want to do anything other than being paid to turn up and be told what to do then you need to focus on the business rather than you.

People who really understand how a company makes economic value are rare and they will be rewarded.

I've only been in my career for about 10 years and I used to be the latter but very much learning to become the former.

If you graft hard and your managers come to depend on you, you can very much find yourself pigeonholed in that position and stuck without growth because they don't want to lose your graft and responsibilities through promoting you.

So I'll do my work and do it to a good standard but never outside my agreed times of working and if there are opportunities for growth, my body if work should prove I'm worth it and if not, I'll just move to a job that will

All over

Always important to keep developing and getting the right quals yourself. Some managers they get stuck in managing others and supporting them to develop and send them on courses and new quals and forget doing the same for themselves and it can come back and bite them in the future. My little bit of wisdom.

Much like the rest of life, it's all half chance. Head down and roll with the punches.

Beyond the Wall

Who's the audience of the talk you are giving?

In my opinion successful presentations tell a story, but you need to understand your audience and what they are looking to get out of it.

Any where I've ever worked I've strived to become invaluable to my boss, starts with good time keeping and punctuality.

Once yiu have achieved the above it's very easy to earn more as well and get perks

I like this , it’s very true in so many sectors and why strategic and commercial roles typically pay more than compliance !

Very true. Wrong attitude is one of the biggest blockers, but unpaid overtime has to be backed with time off !

The old saying is true.

A man with a reputation for being early can be late

If you make the effort like staying late the odd time to get something finished or coming in early you will always have discretion if you need to.come in late or go early.

It can be hard when you get to the stage you’re paid primarily for what you know and how you mobilise others see value in more quals. Creative skills and hobbies can help you grow

Thank-you !

Yes…Knowing when to quit, very important.

Seth Godin wrote a great little book on this called the dip….. we never ever quit in the dip

They are mentees frustrated and wanting to progress faster.

You are very right, I have a story to tell of my own career as a line chart from 1986 to five years into the future from now showing periods of steep and not so steep growth, flat periods , backward steps and key enablers and roles. I’m Using as the basis of the talk before q&a

Have you ever had a boss you really dislike , disrespect and don’t trust ?

I think it’s so important to choose your bosses and companies (more than roles) , but sometimes you get a bad one once one in and it can be almost impossible to keep the right attitude

I guess it’s like a bank balance , overall you have to make credits to be able to make the befits but in some companies it’s what’s seen and by who that matters more than what you actually get done. I’m no fan of staying late or getting in early ! Life is more important than work

This was some years ago at the place I did my apprenticeship. I've left and done well for myself since and if my current role needs me to stay late on occasion, I generally don't mind as I know I can get the time back when I need it.

With my direct reports, I share stories from my past, both the good and bad. Try and let them learn from my mistakes, but also tell them that its okay that they will make the same mistakes, but to try and look for the learning opportunities.

Always look for the value in what you are doing, how can you add it to your CV?

There is an anecdote I heard a while back that I like, “Each job should pay you twice. One is financial compensation and the other is preparing you for your next job. Once you are only getting paid once, its time to move on.”

In a highly regulated environment having a compliance team that understands the real economic drivers (societal _and_ commercial) is highly valuable and can launch careers. Unfortunately I have rarely seen people in those roles demonstrate that capability.

They often work in legal as general counsel rather than in compliance

Very true but often the decision to keep learning is ours!

Culturally, some people just don’t like mistakes or failure and unfortunately they rarely progress

Career planning is an Oxymoron - I’ve never met anyone who has truly planned their career. Equally the career you may have chosen early on in your life may not be the desired path later on for all the reasons that come with maturing. We have a 4000 week lifespan on average, don’t stay in a career you don’t like.

Make what you do mean something.

Once that happens people see your value much more and career opportunities are much easier to go for.

Nothing ever happens in your comfort zone.
