So I’m starting a new job soon and I’m terrified. I’ve been in and out of jobs regularly since I finished my cancer treatment but I really want this one to go well. It’s for a company in a complicated industry. Any words of wisdom from successful people? Xx much love xxxx |

Fake it till you make it!!
It's what I did haha, was honest enough with my boss that I needed his patience and advice but faked it with those I was supervising until one day I realised I wasn't faking anymore.
Good luck OP, you've got this!!

Everyone had to start somewhere and was a beginner.
Learn learn learn then remove the L and earn earn earn
Anything you don't understand don't be worried to ask that shows your interest and keen to be an asset to the company |

"Take in cake on your first day (and maybe a fruit basket for the healthy types) "
Your choice OK but I don't agree here this could look like a cry of desperation to be liked on your first day.
That will come naturally but your colleagues didn't employ you. I would say keep them at arms length but of course do what needs to be done to get the job done so you all get paid and not under paid or put on disciplinaries |

I took a career break while our children were small and worked part time in various jobs for around ten years. The first week I was back in an office I shook the whole time from nerves. It took time to settle in and to become friendly with my colleagues but it happened. Your first few days will be a bit challenging, you'll be trying to learn new things, in a new environment and feeling nervous but they employed you because they believe you're the man for the job...have faith in their decision and you're capabilities |

Just be yourself.
Your boss will already know what your weaknesses / knowledge gaps are, so don't pretend that you know things you don't.
Be straight with people. Work hard and try and do a little bit more than what is expected. Ask questions.
You'll smash it!

Being scared of something new is both to be expected and irrational. Why be scared when you don’t know what you’re scared of? Reality is the employer thinks you can do it (or learn to do it) and they know the job. Trust that judgement.
Rather than worry (which is to catastrophes and focus on possibility of failure) look at as evaluating whether the job and the company are right for you. Pay attention to how people are, how they communicate with colleagues, bosses. Are you supported? It’s not a one way street - they need to be god for you as well as you good for them.
Start with yes to everything then start adding no when you know where your boundaries need to be.
And your boss is just as worried about making a good impression as you are.

Blag it!
I got a job once and realised by boss thought I was some computer whizz from what I'd said in my interview. I wasn't.
But I was there 6 years and had 3 promotions so, yeah, blag it!!! And Google is your friend.
And bring snacks and make coffee for the boss.

Just go be yourself, and remember they employed you because, they liked what they saw and think your capable of doing the job. Don't overthink it. Walk in there knowing and believing you've got this and will smash it out the Park..

Just remember they chose you out of all possible candidates they considered you the best for this , so if you fail , which you won’t, it’s on them not you.
This is how I handle occasional wobbles and insecurity on tough assignments. It’s also how I think when supporting staff I chose that seem to be struggling a little.
The reality is you don’t fail, your best is your best , the best possible and better than anyone else could have done with the support you had.
Just focus on doing your absolute best, it is all anyone can ask and is enough.
If I’m really struggling I’ll read ‘man in the Arena’

You’ve got this. And look, the worst that can happen is that you don’t enjoy it and you get yourself another job. The best that can happen is that it’s an amazing experience and you enjoy going to work everyday.
Think positive and keep your chin up and chest out. |
