I have just had renewals for our car insurance and the cost has increase by over 50%.

No fines, no claims, nothing on our part for the increase.

Just had a quick shop around on the comparisons and the quotes are actually competitive.

What’s going on here? That’s not inflation running at 10%

I've heard this a lot recently.

I just renewed mine... My insurer wanted to put it up like 30% (as they do)... Got a comparision quote for the same as I pay now.

Might be, the West Midlands is a hotbed for car crime, and every other crime it seems, but our cars aren’t the desirable high risk cars like range rovers etc.

Mine came in cheaper this. Ok by £7 but it was enough to stop me having the hassle of shopping around.

Yes, tried that, but the comparisons are around the same as the renewals.

They always seem to try their hand at renewal time, but this time it looks like they are all sticking together.

My renewal has been pretty solid the last few years but this year I'm expecting the worst.

Start new quotes from 60 days before renewal, there is a sweet spot it's usually between. 15-45 days before, where you get a deal (this has been true each year) but never leave it to the last minute, the closer your renewal date the bigger their strap on..

The £7 soon gets swallowed up in the cost of living round here.

This is very true, they seem to target small Toyotas, peugeots and the like.

Car cannibals! How to they take them apart without anyone noticing?

Mechanics would charge loads to do that much taking to bits!

Speak to your insurer. I did and a couple of things had changed like dont need biz cover, lower annual mileage. Mine went down over £100 from the renewal figure.

Mine went for £395 to £1505 (the renwewal), I phoned them and just laughed. Went on comparison site and the cheapest was them for £400. Phoned them back and told them it could be free and id not go with them.

Got next cheapest for £405

nope everyone and i mean everyone has hiked up the cost significantly, i always move to a different company if the price goes up because it should come down if you don't claim

All insurance is likely to rise but car insurance at the moment especially. The industry is in a hard market at the moment meaning rates are up. Repair costs have increased massively in the last few years. Labour costs have increased due to lack of EU workers plus the additional skills needed for electric vehicle work. Cost of new and used cars have increased and the available has decreased. 99% of people will see a big increase on renewals. If you’ve had a claim it could be huge

Increasing numbers of un-insured drivers is the primary cause, add to that car crime and the lack of Police success in tackling it in your force area, and very weak sentencing when they do.The getaway driver (one of the chuckle brothers) for the moron who tried a smash 'n grab on my shop was on a 12 month driving ban,so for driving without insurance he got nothing, for driving while disqualified he got another 6 months.

OP, only down the Road here..

I had my Ins jump up £450 (nearly Double) for the Renewal..

Phoned and spoke to them and was Honest, I'd had a prang where I'd reversed into Someone to be told "Protected no claims is only a Number, we don't pay any attention to it" !! So, I did some shopping around and a Kangaroo themed place only Quoted me 8 quid more than I was already paying with the same benefits!! I think I bit their hand off!

And after all that, the Original Ins company sent me "Proof of NCB" and the Other Driver never even claimed !!!!!!

Mine went up £200 so called them and got it reduced by £130. Said I wanted to stay with them so hadn't looked around yet to give them the opportunity to find me a better deal.

Also saved me that increased up front payment.

All over

You need yp shop around at the optimum time and then haggle with your current insurance. A lot of them will bring the renewal quote down if you threaten to leave. Some also hive extra 15% or so off if you also have house insurance with them. If you are comparing insurances remember to also check one or two that are not on comparison sites. A quick search will reveal those. Mine went up £200 but spoke to them after doing my homework and they matched.

Strange. Nothing has changed for me and my renewal is about £20 more this year. That seems OK on last year when you account for rapid inflation. I shopped around and they were still one of the cheapest. I could have got a bit cheaper but the level of cover and quality of service wasn't worth the £20 saving.

I can only assume some trend or calculation has changed for your situation since last year in terms of how insurance risk is calculated. Maybe you demographic has become riskier. Maybe your area had become worse for crime or road accidents. Maybe others diving the same vehicle as you have been having more accidents. Insurance risk calculation can be a very fickle and seemingly unfair (even if statistically perfectly logical).
