Gym and fat shaming
Jump to: Newest in thread
This is going to be long and ranty. Strap in.
I posted on our status earlier that I was going to the gym, and got a response (from an account we’ve never interacted with) that only people who never/rarely go to the gym feel a need to post about it. There was a strong fat shaming undertone to their message.
Now, I'm not thick. Thicc, yes. But not thick. I KNOW I'M FAT. This doesn't have to mean ugly, or unworthy or anything else. It's just a description.
Secondly, let's say I hated my body. That I thought I was ugly and unsexy. If you hate something, how do you treat it? Do you treat it well, give it everything it needs? I doubt it. You hide it, ignore it, punish it even.
That's not helpful. When you love, (or neutrally accept) your body, it is far easier to nourish it and treat it well.
Lastly, somebody pushing me down to push themselves up isn't going to achieve anything. I will not accept this bullshit in my life, I reject your opinions and your toxic negativity. I will live, fully and beautifully and i don't need any strangers approval for that.
Unless I'm actually sitting on your face, my weight is not your concern. And if I am, lucky you. |

Can I be Lucky please
On a serious note though - as someone who hates going to the gym because I always feel like I'm being glared at - never stop. The twats will never know how much courage and strength it takes to keep going when they try and make you feel worthless. You are pure and simply a diamond |

I (blossom) was blessed with the ability to never give a flying about what anyone ever thought about me. Which also thankfully transposed into rarely judging others (apart from the bigots who can find the hell they wish on others). Pay no mind. It literally is their issue not yours xx |

People are dicks. Most go to the gym to improve themselves and that can only be a good thing. Keep doing what you’re doing and fuck what anyone else thinks. |

Even if it is people who rarely go that share it, so bloody what?
You share what you want and be proud of your success. Sharing keeps the motivation going when you naught need the boost and certainly comments like this person’s don’t help.
Why can’t people just share the love and congratulate your success? You guys are amazing and sorry you had this to deal with |

I've had a new gym membership for 3mths... So far I've used it twice. However my local bakery card has had an absolute hammering within that time frame... Tis what it is, and I do post better cake vs gym selfies |

There really are some prize pricks on here.
People who put others down do so to make themselves feel better.
You're gorgeous, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Go to the bakery after the gym. Cake is good. Eggs for protein and plenty of carbs. |

Anything you do it is your business. Whether you go to the gym or not should be because of your reasons and not because of anyone shaming you. They are just pathetic and sad people if they are happy to insult others in that way. If we all had washboard stomachs and sixpacks the world would be rather boring. In fact I find anyone who has no other interests except going to a gym rather boring myself. People go to the gym for lots of reasons and mostly for health reasons, not to look like god's gift. |

Most people who train know that the only person you are competing against is yesterday's version of you.
And have a fuck load of respect whenever you see someone taking themselves pass their edge.
Anyone who comments like that fella is just showing that they don't gym properly.

I used to do my local Parkrun then hit up the pub round the corner for a full English, with extra buttery toast... It was an awesome system |

That shaming people to go to the gym dors not work. In effect it's bullying. The fact that you have decided to take steps to improve ones health should be commended, and wish you all the best on your fitness journey. |

Do you reckon he is into larger women and therefore felt the need to degrade the op because he feels loosing her, or at least the current proportions? |

LOADS of people openly criticise, or subtly judge, overweight people at the gym.

I don't understand who make such comments
You cant necessarily tell if someone is a regular gym goer just be looking at them
I'm fat, I could be on a weight loss journey and go to the gym 4-5 times a week, if I did that for a month I would still be fat so how can someone tell if I go to the gym or not just by looking
Sounds like that person just wanted to be a twit tbh |

There was a mass outrage a few years ago when Nike started advertising plus size work out clothing, as if fats done need work out wear to go to the gym |

Calling people losers and referring to small dick energy is as much body shaming as calling people fat in my opinion.
Op, don’t respond to people like that, you just give them the rise that they craved when messaging you. |

Sounds like they lack determination and projecting their own lack of determination.
I post about going to the gym to hold myself accountable, when my drive is waning, or I just can't, arrange to meet someone, post about it, book a class whatever it takes to get me there. Haha. |

Fat shaming is simply a form of bullying. Bullies are worthless and generally despised by society. Lonely outcasts with few or no friends.
Ignore them. That's the thing that hurts them most. Getting no reaction.

At some point in life you say fuck it.
To the negativity, to the noise, giving it energy.
I still go to the gym. There are times when I've thought, what's the point? Wallowed. Hated my body.
I decided I'm doing it for me, no one else. Yes, I'm fat. I don't need to apologise or explain away my existence because of that. If going helps you feel better? That's enough.
Don't give headspace to bullies. They're not worth it.

Keep smashing the gym. Use their negativity to motivate you.
Whatever you do in the gym is more than they do on the sofa. Lifting weights, lifting more than their can of cheap lager. Walking on the treadmill, going faster than their sofa.
Everything you do in the gym is better for you, mentally and physically.
Don't let dickheads ruin your day.
I am the old bugger who limps (currently injured) between machines and smashes every set. Headphones on, Thrash Metal playing, Belt on, gloves on and doing my thing.

I used to go to the gym regularly, I hated my body, was over weight and went from a 40 inch waist to a 32 in 6 months; was I happy - No. spent more time at the gym thinking I had to be there and felt guilty when I didn’t train and that I’d get fat again.
I opened a boxing gym where I trained others to box, I stopped working out myself then and was happier. Had to close due to COVID. I never train now. Sometimes I’ll go for the odd jog, but I’m happier in myself being who I am. I’m around a 36 inch waist now at my natural weight. As long as you feel happy In yourself that’s what matters! |

I used to have nice set of abs and wear a size small. When I looked in the mirror I used to think I was obese. Now I am obese and the only reason I work out is to be healthier/fitter as I’m happy with how I look. Much more happy in who I am and in life generally.
Everyone I interact with in the gym who are in amazing shape were always humble, kind, and helpful.
Sounds like this guy may be struggling with his own issues and motivation re’ being fit and healthy.
You keep doing you OP. Glad to see you’re not standing for the BS! |

Sorry this individual felt the need to message you in such a manner.
I wonder if they message people who post that they're going down the pub, that they're alcoholic losers (or similar)?
Why does anyone feel the need to try to bring someone else down?
I had someone bawling at me out of a van window the other evening whilst with a friend. I didn't catch most of it, but did hear the words "fat slag". I replied to my friend 'I wonder what they thought they would achieve by that? As if I've never heard anything about my weight before... It just proves how immature they are.'

"As others already said only those with insecurities put others down in gym, overall it be gym is an incredibly supportive community ruined by a few fucking absolute tossers"
This is generally true. I had a lot of help from gym goers yesterday because my PT couldn't make it last minute, stuff like carrying dumbbells for me and pulling bars down to seated height, which he normally does. |
