Open Minded. What does it mean?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I have my own understanding but i'm frequently coming across it being used as a 'defence' and to put someone else down.. e.g. If you are not open minded enough .... or well you are not open minded ..... etc etc.
What does it mean to you ? |

Being able to listen to another person's point of view and consider it. It doesn't mean you accept it, agree with it or won't report them to the authorities though.
Nobody has got a completely open mind in my opinion, if it's too open everything falls out. |

What it actually means and what people want it to mean are two totally different things.
I personally think it means being willing to try new experiences and ideas. It seems to be mostly used by people who have an agenda and don’t want you to question them.
I don’t think it is a good phrase anymore. |

It's an arcane term which often befuddles me, Grånny. My interpretation is that you are amenable to most things and will consider options/things carefully before deciding.
I don't know. I'm sure you will have a consortium of varied responses. |

The opposite to a fixed mindset , believing in the possibility that you can wrong about someone or something or can learn new things and change your mind.
I would open minded people are more likely to be free thinking and have growth mindset too. |

"Usually it means they're doing something that doesn't appeal to most people and using the phrase to try and make people feel like they're wrong for not agreeing with it "
That's how it's used here at times most definitely |

I'm quite comfortable with this ..... listening and considering before deciding.
So having listened and decided and saying NO .... is the person still open minded ? |

I was referring to coming across it on here.... I think it has a completely different meaning to most on here.
It seems they think if you don't indulge in a certain practice you are not open minded.....
Surely they just mean 'you are not open to this ACT' .......

You don’t have to practice an act to be open minded about it. |

It means they want you to do something that would be considered weird by many people so they are shaming you in advance if you won't agree to doing it. A form of manipulation. |

Yes of course.
I think closed minded people have words like always, impossible & never in their vocabulary, , that’s a sign. |

Yes, because they went through the whole process of ruminating the idea / options. If they hadn't been open minded then they wouldn't have entertained the notion to ponder. |

They say you etch a new idea onto a closed mind..
So I guess bring open to new ideas, new ways of doing things, ppls opinions, there beliefs cultural practices. |

Open minded means the person is Willing to try anything at least once before they say no thank you to it.
That doesn't mean they expect others to be that way they are simply letting others know it's what they are like so it's not easy to shock them neither are they going to make a person feel bad or uncomfortable for the kinks or fantasies they have.
I don't know why a person would see it as a form of manipulation we all have our own minds don't we? |

Because, like "don't be mean" or " calm down" are used against people who are neither being mean nor uncalm to try and make it a fault in them, oh you're not very open minded is used to try and shame people out of their prefences or choices too often. |

For me, its a willingness to accept there are viewpoints that differ from ones own. Not necessarily agreeing, but accepting the fact that those viewpoints exist. |
