I don't remember ever specifically learning it but probably around the same time as I learnt that Asia is also not a country. But I do hear it referred to as a country so clearly some people still haven't!! |

Yep had the reverse issue, only realised that South Africa was an actual country at ~23 after a casual conversation with a stranger who got quite annoyed with me for getting stuck in a loop of "which country - south Africa - but which country", was very embarrassing. I actually have immigrant relatives there but through my childhood everyone only ever mentioned city names. Must have thought they were like Luxembourg Monaco and the Vatican city! |

Probably in my teens.
We we're taught geography in Primary school and in secondary it was all rocks and rivers.
I can't remember exactly when I heard of a country in Africa, but I'm guessing it was South Africa when it was on the news.

"Africa is easy, I was told. But I have trouble understanding the UK, Great Britain and the British Isles. "
I have to refer to Google every time, to explain that.
I know one is all the Islands, one is English Scotland and Wales and one is something else lol I keep forgetting.

I don't really remember. I've always had an interest in animals, and there really is no "bigger" place than Africa for big wildlife. I knew which countries certain animals were more numerous native, or associated with.
So I've known africa itself is not a country for a long ass time. As to when thst was, I can't say. |
