Brutal honesty in my opinion is rarely needed. Why on earth would anyone be brutal with friends or family?
The truth never hurt anybody is a really daft phrase if you ask me and often used by unkind people |

Fuck no filter, don't really think about what I'm writing......I think no filter and brutal honesty...is so contextual....on here not so well received by some ....in a recovery environment absolutely necessary and recieved a lot easier |

It's always good to think before you speak. Knowing your audience though is key. I would have been in a lot of bother, especially at work, if I just blurted out everything I thought without considetation on how that would go down with certain people. With close friends and family I am not that guarded though. |

Very much this.
I've enough knowledge of my self to know when some things are uncalled for. Unnecessary. Even more so with friends and families. I don't have foes, just people I don't particularly care for. They still don't receive me full barrel because they have their own crap going on.

With work I always have to have a professional filter so I'm quite well practiced. If I don't think what I'm going to say is going to be of anyone's benefit then I will keep it to myself. Unless they ask for the truth - then they get it  |

The only people who can't handle the truth being said back to them are the ones going around usually being two faced to other people. Then when it comes back to them they can't handle it and fly off in a rage like a toddler does. |

I think that there is a difference between being totally honest, brutally honest and carefully honest.
I have no filter in a lot of ways. I don't hold back perviness and I don't hold back about myself on many occasions.
I'm honest with people. I don't hide the truth... or at least my view of the truth. But I'd not be brutal and I think that those who "have no filter" in that way are just insensitive and uncaring about the people they are speaking to, or about.
There are so many ways to be kind *and* truthful, why blame the person you hurt for the hurt you inflict by not being thoughtful? |

In my home we share love and brutal truths in equal measures, just as I was raised I don't do pat me till I die and be positive till you puke your guts. The myth of being always happy is a construct of self proclaimed life coaches. We embrace range of feelings and being comfortable going through them. That starts with (self) honesty.
