Devon County Council, who are responsible for running public services in Devon have voted to abolish the mobile library service. Stephen Fry has spoken out about this as the service is a lifeline for many rural people. Tom was on holiday in Devon and he saw the mobile library van in action but the mobile van had collided with a cyclist knocking the rider off his bike. He lay there screaming and Tom saw the library driver quickly get out of the vehicle and rush towards the cyclist presumably to help. The librarian driver just said 'Hush !' |

It’s a handy ‘buffer’ that keeps these heathens at arms length from the civilised citizens of Dorset |

"Most people in Devon are illiterate anyway, Tom. So it's a service worth axing.
Just you wait until Posh sees this. You're meat!!

I was about to say, Posh will whoop Nerø's backside "
It's a battle I'd pay to watch. |

To be followed by other counties no doubt. Books are for posh people who can read whole sentences at a time. No longer needed in twatter land. |

It's ok - I've already Telegram'd her with a hollow apology. She had no idea what I was talking about. |

"Did Tom crack a joke?
No, he was recounting a real life incident. He's a professional news reporter, not a tabloid journalist!"
Apologies. Carry on Tom |

If that's how mobile libraries are driven in Devon, I would imagine that cyclists would be the first ones to wield the axe. |

"About 825,000 people live in Devon. In the two days since the "don't close our mobile libraries" petition has opened, about 250 people have signed. "
So many people have cars etc nie it's probably just the few who have no transport or are housebound who rely on the mobile service. It's quite sad that as with all such cases the most vulnerable minority are affected. |

These services are an absolute godsend for people.
It’s not just about books - it’s a friendly, reassuring face etc, particularly if they have a service that delivers books to houses. I know of instances where the drivers have quickly identified a problem at a house and saved lives.
It’ll be a smallish, mostly older cohort of people affected, but they (and family/friends) will be bereft. Forgotten people, really.
Very sad in one of the richest (but, sadly, very unequal) countries in the world. |

I said “one of”. We’re the sixth biggest economy, aren’t we?
I totally agree about the last few years (I’d say seven, not five)! |
