"Does anyone else get irritated by Americanism? - whether terminology or practices? It seems that 'gotten' is creeping into UK language, along with 'where are you at?' and then there's trick or treating, school proms and a need on TV programmes after an ad break to repeat the last 5 minutes of content before the ad break. And then there's elongating words with up and down inflections to give an insincere and sickly drawl, etc, etc. Why do we do it and allow it? Grrrrrr Any other examples? Do you think it's acceptable? There, I've got it off my chest. Y'all have a nice day!" Yeah it really bothers me too. I hate all the school still like year 11 etc. no it’s 5th year high school be proud of what we made

I particularly don't like the fact that the "gospel" scientific spellings of things globally is being set as the American versions - sulfur, hemoglobin, fetus etc.

"When people ask if they can “get” something rather than “have” it. And “gotten” makes my teeth itch." “ gotten “ was probably exported to the Americas, it’s been in use in Dorset for centuries. “ wos gotten there then boy” is just one example of many usages of the word. I probably use it at least half a dozen times a day.

"I’ve got to say, there is a word they’re still pronouncing correctly whereas it makes my teeth ache when I hear many Brits say it now; Britain. It’s pronounced without sounding the T in it. It isn’t Brit-Turn. Same with Soften, Often….ignore the T. Miles" Wouldn't Britain without the T be Brian

"I’m an American expat, and this forum is instructive. I, and my phone, adopt British spellings when I’m in this country. My accent is not going to change. Accents don’t change on their own after about age 11. Sociologically I find both cultures, and their cross pollination, fascinating (if a little alarming when certain American-style thought appears to migrate over here). In my personal life, I am constantly aware that large swathes of the (mostly English) culture feel as some of you do about various things to do with the U.S. and that it’s far from just language that vexes many of you, I’m not here to argue about it. If you’d find my accent annoying, or have a bone to pick with anything you deem “American” about me, please just don’t try to have sex with me " Accents are totally different to the actual words and spellings. Zero issues with American accents (nor any other accent), but I do get annoyed with the American spellings that have come into my science, sorry

"I quite like when language evolves, it’s always happened and it’s nice to be there when changes occur to see what takes off and what fails." Unfortunately, the evolution of language is more often just an excuse for sloppiness and ignorance than being of benefit to the vocabulary or spelling. I have no problem with some spellings, for instance, 'program' but I object to 'meters' when meaning 'metres'. I abhor the pronunciation 'killommeters',which are presumably devices for measuring kills. we don't say 'kill-oggrams' (yet, but I dare say language will evolve to accommodate such ignorance).

I'm still not following what the "decline of the family" has to do with the evolution of English, but perhaps I'm too dim to understand. It's a given that English is evolving, it does constantly, but not because the family unit is changing.

"So as a American I going to throw up the middle finger. It's might be a universal understanding. We all are different. Just like you. We all speak different just like you. Here is a novel idea. Don't be a dick." Being different is good , no argument from me . The changes/influences that people mention in this thread are rwal and happening however. We eatch so much American TV now that it's inevitable. British shoes are usually adapted for US audiences (the office for example) but the reverse doesn't happen. A British Breaking Bad would be a ridiculous concept for example. Is there an equivalent example you can give happening in America regarding language and phrases changing ?

So who has the bad condition again? The thread lists " Americanism" as a disdain.I would say we are winning because of the responses. It's what is intended. If we are that bad turn our shit off and quit being let me say a "Cunt". It your choice to listen not ours. BTW cunt is super derogatory here. I personally don't really care, but you are being a stereotypical american right now - ignorant, feeling very entitled and arrogant. Look, some people like their own culture, like brits, and don't want ot be swallowed by a bigger nation and lose their identity. They like to be different to you. American is not better, it's just different. And the way you are being ignorant is by not realising how insidious it is. No one can stop it, and it happens very slowly, without anyone really noticing. So no one can choose to "not listen". You're really the only one whining here atm and being all defensive and upset how no one wants to be like you or something. Dunno what exactly your problem is, but maybe it's not everyone else, maybe it's really just you. First of all who started the thread again? Let that sink in. How does my " entitlement" come into play again? We can't have our own language without pissing someone else off? I would say you are the entitled one thinking people can't be different. I accept the differences why can't you? So who is the entitled one me or you? I'll wait. You mentioned my entitlement. I accept all. Clearly by the responses here it's evident that some think we are fucking idiots. Yet they are truly the ones with 0 understanding. Blu does not speak proper English. Typical American. This post is a great hindsight to me.Its awesome and a eye opener. It solidifies some of my values." Yeah, glad it was an eye opener. When are you leaving now to go back to the states again?

"Like I said if it bothers everyone. Turn everything that has American influence off. Get back to your own roots. Leave us out of your own ignorance. We will be better off. Sincerely a stupid American. " You are quite loud about this for someone who doesn't care. Look, I don't care how american and british mix. Heck, english uses a lot of german and french words, too. What icks me is just your attitude and how you deal with this scenario. So egocentric and arrogant. You can cry "everyone thinks americans are dumb" and nothing will change if you don't show that you can be clever. Actions are louder than words, darling. I am not even british, I am a total outsider here, so don't shove me into a camp with those tommys

So in your eyes I can't respond negatively. We are not all dumb as alot of some assume. Yet here we are.

I want to know how other countries think of our culture. Apparently I am right we need to just step back and let everyone else just accept their own fates. The hatred proves my point. We don't need anyone. Call me entitled if you wish but it's the truth. Hopefully we just take care of our own culture in the future. Clearly we don't matter. Enjoy.

You choose what you let upset you. And that's the issue. You always tryto blame everyone else for saying things, when it's only an issue because you react to it. Be cool. Don't let things get to you. Don't show how easily agitated you are, it's not a sexy look

"So as a American I going to throw up the middle finger. It's might be a universal understanding. We all are different. Just like you. We all speak different just like you. Here is a novel idea. Don't be a dick. But we don't eat biscuits with gravy lmfao . Cookies. Biscuits are a totally different thing. When you say bum I assume a vagrant. " Nice Bum" I am not a bum. Complimenting something that is perceived as a insult. Learn the vernacular. I do some people don't. " And fanny pack. Here, that would be something shoved up the lady area after gynaecology surgery!! Gotta love the different meanings of the same thing
