Anyone work for an car insurance company?. Im thinking about changing my car from my very old car(golf 1.6) to a new or nearly new car(possibly going down to a 1.4 engine) and was wondering what the main thing that increases the car insurance cost. Is it the engine size or the value of the car, or the number of miles you do a year? |

"I want to know, if u pay for a years worth of car insurance but a month in u want to cancel for some reason or other can u? Lol"
any financial agreement will have a cooling off period but you will have t pay the charges pro-rata's to the date you cancel it.
a cooling off period is usually 14 days |

"Car insurance puzzles me completely. Mine went up £40 when i became unemployed, the reason..... I had more time to drive around and be in an accident !!!!!!!! "
They obviously think cars run on fresh air! Obviously being unemployed means you will never be off the roads! |

I tried that argument, but they said I would be travelling to inter_iews regularly...... I asked had they noted the unemployment numbers recently..... but they wouldnt budge on it. |

From what I have seen its all sorts of things not just the engine size, your best bet is to use one of the search websites and see what price you get, I always search that way but have only ever once stayed with the same insurer.
And I went from a 1.6 ltr 1995 proton to an imported 1996 2 ltr soft top golf, about £20 more expensive |

Yes you can cancel. The refund will depend on how long you have held that policy.
If its brand new they will charge short period rates, which are higher than pro rata. If it was renewed then pro rata will apply. |

Technically they are right. If you are in work the number of hours that you have potential to be on the road reduces, hence less risk of accident.
Its harsh, but their stats must show that hence increased rates.

Best advice is to join an owner's club. Many offer discounts to members for things like insurance.
Also, if you use a comparison website to get quotes, don't just go through the website, ring the insurance company and negotiate to bring your quote down. Also let your current insurer know of any lower quotes you've had and challenge them to beat it, they often try because they hate loosing money... |

Just be aware of hidden bits in theses online policies. Such as restricted mileage. As an ex broker I had a number of clients who thought they had a good policy, until we stripped it back and pointed put the flaws. |

"Look up the insurance group of the car you are going to get and the group of the Golf.
Higher group = more premium"
Not always.
My brother went from a 1ltr Fiesta that he bought for £900 when he passed his test to an Audi TT after a year if driving. He was paying just over £1400 to insure the Fiesta and just under £900 for the Audi...lol |

Don't worry as when I did the search for insurance for imported vehicles after the company I had at the time could only offer £80 pm payment, I spoke to a nice lady on the phone and went through the policy so hopefully nothing hidden but surely if they know I only use it for recreation and work, there wouldn't be a restriction on mileage? |

I did that and they couldn't, I think though it depends on who the company uses as my present insurance company wasn't under my previous one |

I find this too plus those insurance companies supposedly for women charge double what I have eventually got cheaper elsewhere, for example, I had a 1.6 ltr vauxhall vectra that the women only insurance company wanted over £300 but I got it with someone else, fully comp for £148 |

Yes but more had changed than just the car. How much would the Fiesta have cost to renew? |

I've never paid over £400 for any of my cars to be insured fully comp. That includes Escort and Sierra Cosworth's and a couple of Nissan Skyline GTR's. My other top tip is to get an advanced license, a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm system and tracker fitted. The initial costs are recouped very quickly with what you save on insurance. |

Not a whole lot less. They saw it as a high risk because it was worth bugger all. The Audi, being considerably more expensive, was less of a risk because he was more likely to drive it carefully.
Either that or it was because he joined the police service.... |

Neither would I, I always go with the cheapest, my finances wouldn't cope otherwise and I do need a car with two jobs.
Do I take it then that the standard alarm fitted to a car, makes no difference to the cost? Not sure I could cope with the advanced driving test though I have always fancied doing it |

I checked my policy for travel in Europe and they asked me for an update of circumstances, so I 'fessed up to a 3 point endorsement for using my mobile ( I was en- route to pick up my new car with hands-free fitted!!!!).... Anyway , they hiked my premium by £780!!!!!! because of the 3 points. - I have no other points on my licence........ I wish I hadn't phoned them( admiral) |

Standard alarms and imobilisers do make some difference (especially the BMW one). But they're no match for a full closure cat1 rated system.
Mine sends me text alerts if it thinks the car has been tampered with and the tracker means if my car is stolen it can be tracked and recovered by the police, very quickly. Sadly non of the above stops Muppets smashing the window tobtry to steal the stereo... |

My other half was told its because a large percentage of whiplash claims are from unemployed people, thankfully she wasn't out of work long and her insurance was altered back to a reasonable price. |

They shouldn't charge mid term. If the 3 points were gained during that policy period then you don't have to declare it until renewal.
I would go back and argue thecase. e |

They do indeed, even though most, except ABS, cause more problems. |

If you go online you should be be able to find a copy of the wording, which should outline short period rates. |

You have a 14 days cooling off period, if you cancel after that you will have to pay a cancelation fee |

there are things to look at... the spec of the car you are driving can up the cost...the job that you do (for example there are ways of saying what job you do, that will get you cheaper insurance.... the classic being that journalists for some reason are charged the most for insurance... and civil servants are charged the least)
there are websites around that go thru this stuff with you.... |
