Winchester University which is the town were King Alfred burnt his cakes, have paid 24k for a statue and now moving it onto a more secure plinth apparently because vandals may target it with paint. Waste of money or great value?

My science books sadly omitted the piece of elastic thing

And is it Archimedes Principle you refer to? There's negligible mass of ships/boats, compared to the total mass of water on the planet. It will make absolutely no difference.

Universities receive a lot of private funding and donations, as well as ring fenced teaching and research funding from the Govt (though less and less all the time). Much research and building development etc is effectively funded by donations or partnerships between institutions and businesses, or wealthy individuals.

I find she’s fine when reading a pre-prepared script or given an exceptionally easy ride in interviews. Falls to pieces when challenged and had to go off-script and answer for herself.

Definitely a PR friendly face / front for the team behind her (including billionaires) which is driving the agenda / message and financing the whole thing.

Anyway. Jam first! ALWAYS. And it’s definitely pronounced scone. Not scone.

Are you able to understand how being autistic might impact Ms Thunberg? Being prepared and things unfolding via an agreed format will be typically much easier and less anxiety inducing for most autistic people. Including the person sat next to me.

Absolutely. I totally get it. No critique of her or anyone who has autism, indeed I never mentioned or implied anything about her autism at any point?

But that also tells me that someone is pre-preparing her scripts. It’s great she has the gumption to get up and read them. All the more power to her.

But I stand by the fact that there’s a big machine behind her using her as a “relatable” face to spread “the message”.

She says what she’s told. And has been told all her life. I have no doubt she absolutely stands by what she says though given her parents backgrounds and beliefs, and all the more power to her.

Why do you think someone else is preparing for her? She is quite capable of preparing for herself. She is quite likely preparing what she is going to talk about, prepares the likely responses needed to questions etc herself. If it goes off piste, she will find it harder to respond off the cuff, even if she knows the theory/information exactly. You didn't mention autism but you questioned her ability to speak in public and have now twice suggested that she has "people behind her" doing the preparation. You seem unable to understand how an incredibly intelligent, autistic person might prepare and present on a topic from their own expertise.

If someone is going to volunteer themselves as the public face of a cause, then I would expect them to have to face critical challenge, autism or not, the same as any other outspoken public figure representing any cause.

Should Greta get an exemption from any form of questioning / challenge due to her autism?

She (or the machine behind her) puts herself out there and made herself a worldwide personality / spokesperson on the subject so she can’t expect a free pass.

We’re clearly not going to agree on the huge machine behind her - so I’ll grant you the right of reply to this post and the last word, and rather than continue in a circular argument I’ll leave the debate here!

Of course she is open to criticism. However, it's possible to understand why she comes across as she does, rather than assume she is someone else's puppet. That is all.

I find the constant nitpicking about her to be immensely unfair. There are multitudes of male figureheads for various causes, who are unable to even remember the untruths they told in the prior interview, yet don't receive such incredible criticism. Indeed the opposite, people support them, vote for them. Agree with them.

Not everyone is the same and not everyone is a born public speaker, full of charisma. It doesn't mean that they don't have something valuable to contribute to society.

Maybe because she speaks from a pulpit of extreme privilege to tell the proles that doing everything they can to scrape by makes them the worst thing in the world and they must be stripped of what meagre options they have so that those of her ilk can continue to utilise far more carbon on a per capita basis than any of the people whose lives she would seek to destroy.

At some stage things are so far through the looking glass it's not even entertaining. A young autistic woman is a puppet of big eco, not big tech or big pharma but the shadowy forces of big eco.

What sort of reality do you you exist in to believe such nonsense. Your education system has failed you, likely your parents too and most importantly you failed yourself.

Winchester is definitely NOT on the Somerset levels (where Alfred is said to have burnt the cakes / bread / scones so does that call into question how trustworthy Tom’s sources are!?!

Is this a game changer for the forums!?

Can we trust ANYTHING he says!? "

Ahem, Somerset? Winchester? I would just like to promote the Sussex village of Alfriston (Alfred's town) as to the actual firery bake off. Apparently everything was too burnt to decide if Alf had scones or a bun in the oven

This. More interested in the type of cake's King Alfred burnt?!

If I remember correctly from my history lessons in school the affor mentioned cakes were actually bread rolls

Aye bread is assumed (if the story is indeed true)

It's supposedly on the Somerset Levels that old Alf burnt the cakes. Wheaten cakes, by all accounts.

Waste of money on a self entitled, privileged woman who gained fame as her parents entertained their narcissistic child.

Of course our universities can just raise fees to pay for this stupidity because too few people call it out for what it really is… pathetic.

I can understand why her simplistic message appeals to children, but I don't fully understand why so many adults are such big fans when there are so many actual qualified scientists around to listen to. What I find particularly creepy is the veneration for this very young, vulnerable looking autistic woman from middle/older aged single men.

Like many I've worked hard all my life, struggled sometimes to get by but everything I have has been earned by my own labours as it should be.

To be lectured by,indoctrinated children, which is what's happening in many places of learning is nothing short of insulting and demeaning.

1850 is a very long time ago, isn't it? Before the profileration of cars, the mass extraction and burning of fossil fuels, the invention of plastics and the level of consumerism we see now. It was only 20-30yrs after the Industrial Revolution took off in earnest. We're reaping the consequences of the following 173 years of human activity.

A volcano will throw out more to damage the planet in a day or two than man has ever done. I've no doubt exhaust fumes etc damage human life but many are just sheep. It's just another route to taxation. Same as the ozone layer was a few years ago. If a climate scientist can't find a problem, he's out of work.

The Central England Temperature Data Series goes back to 1659 and there is written evidence of earlier climate and weather phenomena. We can also calculate likely climatic conditions from the past, based on things like tree ring data, ice core data etc.

The Amazon blurb

"In The Climate Book, Greta Thunberg has gathered the wisdom of over one hundred experts - geophysicists, oceanographers and meteorologists; engineers, economists and mathematicians; historians, philosophers and indigenous leaders - to equip us all with the knowledge we need to combat climate disaster. Alongside them, she shares her own stories of demonstrating and uncovering greenwashing around the world, revealing how much we have been kept in the dark."

"

Or more likely you simply can't play the ball.

Even if the shaman of our times hadnt been caught out repeatedly using dodgy manipulated data to further the narrative; their demonstrable actions make it absolutely clear that their position is at best self interested, at worst genocidal.

There are answers to CO2. If that is indeed the problem. But funnily enough those aren't the things we are doing. Alternative RELIABLE energy is the answer. Thorium has already been mentioned but even standard uranium fission at this stage would be a perfectly fine alternative. But no, that would be an actual solution to the energy crisis wouldn't it. Can't be having that. Not when there's more research grants to be obtained strapping thermometers to asphalt heatsinks at the airports.

There are answers to excessive consumption. If that is indeed the problem. But those who seek to collect their awards never seem to find the climate sufficiently important to do it via Zoom.

No, the answer is simply to immiserate in the short term and frankly to decimate in the long term.

The aims of this lobby cannot be achieved via the tactics being employed without mass deaths being the inevitable collateral damage.

And between the shysters making bank on manipulation and authoritarianism, and the actual working people who will suffer for their enrichment there are the class of the useful idiot, like some I could mention. Those who will haughtily pronounce their superiority by assuring us all that it's right and good that people are stripped of their rights and freedoms, and it's necessary, essential even that Tracy the care worker be prized out of her Ford Fiesta she uses to get to her care job because otherwise we'll all burn in eternal hellfire. And that it must be true, and right, and your virtue is assured because a popular Hollywood star told you so, right before collecting his hat that he helicoptered in lest he be seen without it on the red carpet.

Is that playing the man enough?

"Do we have reliable and safe ways to dispose of nuclear waste from reactors, across the world? Do we have enough nuclear fuel to power the whole world, because the world needs to reduce CO2, not just a few countries. "

Actually yes. We do.

Reprocessing technology has reduced the volume of waste hugely since the bad old days of 3 mile island. And we have long had the technology to store it securely. What does anyone suppose we do with the material that is produced by the reactors we currently have?

The fuel question, well it's a finite resource like anything else. Just like the lithium and cobalt in the batteries of the cars we will be forced to buy in the next few years. How long will it last? Who can say. Like any other mineral deposit there is X amount of it in existence, Y amount of it discovered and Y approaches X at a rate of Z.

Or more accurately, that the privileged will have the chance to buy. Everyone else will be back to the transportation technological level of 1890.

And let us not pretend for a second that the renewables industry is without its waste problems. Do you know how many toxic compounds go into the photovoltaic cell? And the amount of energy generated over the lifespan of the product compared to the ecological damage of disposal.

All energy technologies have their dirty secrets. But SOME of them actually work.

Pragmatism demands a balance of those things. But pragmatism is a practice designed for those who want good outcomes. A zealot has no use for it.

Yes, in fact Thorium reactors use almost 100% of the energy in the fuel, as opposed to less than 0.5% in LWR and HWR Uranium reactors today. There's nothing in the decay chain that can be used to make weapons, the very little waste it does produce has a half-life of 300 years, not tens of thousands and they can even be used to take existing waste from old reactors and burn it up to make more energy. It doesn't need processing, it's literally everywhere and we will never run out of this stuff. It is simply too common.

"I couldn't care less what they do with their money to be completely honest.

This. More interested in the type of cake's King Alfred burnt?!

If I remember correctly from my history lessons in school the affor mentioned cakes were actually bread rolls

Aye bread is assumed (if the story is indeed true)

https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofEngland/King-Alfred-the-Cakes/

Thanks I see the comment about scones and thought maybe I'm wrong, not for the first time

Anyway, back to the OP!!

Winchester is definitely NOT on the Somerset levels (where Alfred is said to have burnt the cakes / bread / scones so does that call into question how trustworthy Tom’s sources are!?!

Is this a game changer for the forums!?

Can we trust ANYTHING he says!?

Ahem, Somerset? Winchester? I would just like to promote the Sussex village of Alfriston (Alfred's town) as to the actual firery bake off. Apparently everything was too burnt to decide if Alf had scones or a bun in the oven "

I always thought said baking incident took place in the Somerset levels

The statue of Rocky that was left at the top of the steps in Phillidelfphia (also known as Philly, which is the name of a great deli style cheese sandwich) was often a debate as it was a fictional character but also pop culture makes it kinda historic.

Say what you want about Greta, (I like her) she got you all talking and made you aware that people care about the planet, and I reckon if it came to a pillow fight, there’s more of us than there is of those that don’t give a shit, and would happily watch it burn.

I don’t mean the protesters that glue them selves to stuff, just people who actually will choose alternatives or recycle or walk 100 metres to the shop instead of being a lazy ass and driving…..

I say let them have a statue, what’s it got to do with anyone else?

There are lots of statues of criminals in their time. Mrs Pankhurst is rightly celebrated in St Peter's Square in Manchester, but she and other suffragettes were criminalised at the time. Should we tear down Mrs Pankhurst?

I never said it was easy to implement but That’s what is needed, which is why those fucktards gluing their hands to the floor are wasting our time.

Pretending that a life without oil is possible is sooo foolish. Oil refineries supply many product streams and so unless people plan to sit at home in hemp loin cloths growing potatoes in their gardens that have been converted to allotments, I would really love to see how they think that we would become carbon neutral. Basic chemical equation balancing in GCSE tells you that.

If these eco warrior pretenders actually have a plan, I would love to hear it but they don’t… they are simply shouting like the religious fanatics… don’t know what they want but are willing to die for it… but unlike religious fanatics, they may not want to die for the cause, they may be prepared to simply give up their skinny latte or use a recycled cup.

"Please let this post die… Greta is now an adult.

She was an irritating precocious little brat and now she is a little older but still behaving like a twat.

If we need to do anything about climate change, it is to stop breeding. It is not the size of our carbon footprint alone that matters but the number of feet!

Do the maths…

Oh that will fix the climate problems for sure. And so easy to implement.

I never said it was easy to implement but That’s what is needed, which is why those fucktards gluing their hands to the floor are wasting our time.

So, gosh, who to believe about climate change? The 196 countries who signed The Paris agreement focussed on reducing greenhouse emissions so the global temperature increase is limited to 1.5 degrees. (Pretty much all climate scientists agree that reduction in use of fossil fuels is a priority) OR some bloke on Fab who says we should stop breeding. So tricky.

Hmmmm? Politicians or science … always a tricky choice.

A bit like transgender in sport… politics or science… eventually science wins out.

Love your reference to the Paris Accord though… we live in a country that buys massive quantities of products from China and Other Asian markets that laugh in the face of the targets… and let’s be clear, those who nodded sagaciously in Paris were then nodding again in Glasgow two years ago… Climate Procrastination and Masturbation, they both feel good but produce very little.

As I said, trust the politicians if you want… I will follow the money and the science.

Climate Change policy should be driven by science. I don't think we are on different sides.

"Winchester University which is the town were King Alfred burnt his cakes, have paid 24k for a statue and now moving it onto a more secure plinth apparently because vandals may target it with paint. Waste of money or great value?"

Waste of money.

"Topple her into the nearest river, if it hasn't dried up!

How dare you!

It was actually a dig at the current trend for toppling statues, coupled with a wry allusion to climate change.

Who dares posts!

Well as she now has a criminal record after her court appearance, should people be building statues of criminals?

There are lots of statues of criminals in their time. Mrs Pankhurst is rightly celebrated in St Peter's Square in Manchester, but she and other suffragettes were criminalised at the time. Should we tear down Mrs Pankhurst?

Absolutely yes.

Why?"

“led by key WSPU figures such as Emmeline Pankhurst, targeted infrastructure, government, churches and the general public, and saw the use of improvised explosive devices, arson, letter bombs, assassination attempts and other forms of direct action and violence.”

Sounds lovely, let’s build a statue to a terrorist.

I don't think Mrs Pankhurst is a millionaire. She's not even extant.

I'm genuinely always amazed when people use the suffragettes as some paragons of virtue.

Who did that? Just as an example of people who whom we have statues, but who were criminalised in their lifetimes. Nowt more.

True if Greta is so biblical . She should donate her assets to the cause.

It happens very often.

You say criminalised in their lifetimes, they were criminals, there's no need to spin it.

No spinning. I used Mrs Pankhurst as an example. Another example might be Alan Turing. We have a lovely statue and gardens in Manchester. He was criminalised during his lifetime for having a homosexual relationship. He was chemically castrated due to the criminal conviction. But we have statues of this "criminal".

He was eventually pardoned in 2013, but we had the statue and gardens long before that. His "crime" is no longer on the statute books so he was a criminal in his life time but would not be so now. Should we remove his statue too? He was a criminal, don't forget!
