Some songs from past decades just wouldnt be seen as 'appropriate' now.
Claire
Sitting in the back row
Young girl
are just a few that suggest relations with someone a little too young.
Strange how music evolves. |

"Was it Brotherhood of Man who sang that Eurovision song? Ended in a comment about someone only being 13 or something "
Yep, Save all your kisses for me....1976.
And we wonder why there was so much unacceptable behaviour back then? |

Even back then, it was obvious to me that the song was referring to the singer's child (even though you're only 3)...I think we're sometimes too quick to stick the inappropriate tag onto innocent songs - my dad used to sing save all your kisses for me to my younger siblings as they were 3 when the song came out |

"Know where your coming from..
young girl was a good toon..
thought Clair was about a baby girl.."
Claire was yes, but the insinuation was there.....' why in spite of our age difference do I cry, each time I leave you I feel I could die' etc.
Just seems a bit erm.....wrong. |

There is an episode of the Tweenies on CBeebies where one of the characters is dressed up as Jimmy Saville introducing a kids song called "One finger, one thumb". You couldn't make it up! |

I'd forgotten the exact age but 3 sounds fine. 13 would've been a dodgy age where it could've totally been misinterpreted!
My Dad used to sing "Close your eyes and I'll kiss you" to me when I was little which was really cute but could've been taken badly if overheard nowadays! |

I definately wasnt suggesting that any song sung by a Dad to his child was innapropriate, what I meant was that some lyrics were openly innapropriate, others ( like Save all your kisses for me) pointed to a romance then had a twist at the end ..... ie , it was directed at their child.

Wasn't having a go, honest . Yes, Young Girl could have been construed as inappropriate but could have been a much older man for a younger (but not necessarily underage) girl/woman 'specially in the 60's where maybe big age differences may have been less common |

Funny thing was that back in 70's it just seemed that it didnt happen ( child abuse i mean). My old mum said that it didnt happen in her day. It very obviously did but people brushed it under the carpet i guess. The transition period between it being ignored and it being outlawed was around the 70s and 80s I think.
Even characters in TV prog like On the Buses used to make sexual comments to schoolgirls. Another one was Please Sir, ....
Think I need to change my name to Mary Whitehouse...... google her lol xx

Totally going off topic so I apologise, but this reminds me of a debate I had in sociology. We were discussing whether there was more or less child abuse nowadays, and one of my arguments was what was seen as acceptable, actually not that long ago, isn't acceptable now. For example, someone getting 'the slipper' for saying something cheeky was acceptable then, but is now abuse. Obviously more serious forms of abuse were serious then and are serious now, but I think with the internet and other technology, it's easier for children to be abused, therefore I'd say more are in that way now.
Sorry to darken the mood but this thread got me thinking about it.

When my dad met my mum, he was 18 and she told him she was the same age. They dated for a bit, she fell pregnant at the same time Gary Puckett released Young Girl... its also the same time she revealed she was only only 15! She was only 16 by a couple of months when she gave birth to me.

The first two choruses say 'cause I love you girl' the reference to a woman only appears in the third one ... perhaps an indication that she becomes a woman because of what they're about to do?
A bit deep I know but I still think the virgin child line sounds dodgy. |

That line is touching upon his view of his child's purity. (the subject of the song, not Rod's) |

Kenny Everett's response to Mary's disgust at his show "
The best response to Mary Whitehouse was the one from the producers of Dr Who in the 70's. After she complained to the BBC about the show, the producers wrought her a letter that basically said "Dear Mrs Whitehouse, thank you for the letter and your publishing it in the press. By doing so, you have given us an extra 100,000 viewers. Could you do it again next week?". She was apparently furious. |
