Does anyone know?

I make a payment to ***, I receive an error message payment hasn't processed. I try again 2 hours later. The same message.

I log into bank. 2 pending transactions.

The payment is received by *** 6 days later. But bank still is pending the other 1 attempt.

*** says its the bank need to reject. Bank says *** needs to cancel

Who is right?

If it’s a payment you instigated the bank.

If it’s a direct debit or standing order the payee.

How have you made the payment? Faster payment, credit card, debit card, direct debit, cheque, something else?

When you say app do you mean the Tesco mobile app? You payed a bill on the Tesco app with your card? You didn’t use the bank app to send money to Tesco?

To be honest it doesn’t really make sense as you describe it.

If you have payed by a card then the transaction either goes through or it doesn’t. If it has gone through then it should clear in a day or so and you shouldn’t have a pending transaction. A pending transaction for a card payment for several days is a little odd.

Thinking it through - the fact that it is still pending in the bank would suggest to me that the issue is actually in the card processor that Tesco mobile use to take payments - a card processor is a third party who handles the connection to the debit card network for Tesco. It is very likely that they were the cause of the initial failures and the problem occurred in their network after they asked your bank to authorise the payment but before they told you or Tesco that the money had been paid. That could explain why it is still pending in your bank and the bank things it is Tescos problem. The bank would be right in that case.

Tesco won’t have seen the money and the people you are talking to there probably don’t understand about the card processor - they will think it is money and therefore the banks problem. I don’t think it is. I think Tesco’s supplier has an issue and your money is blocked somewhere in that part of the pipe.

I don't know what a faster payment is. When I pay morrisons food shop, it stops at a screen where it asks you to choose to authorise by either bank app, text code etc. When I pay something like amazon it just goes straight through, no pending.

This is only the 2nd bill for tesco mobile, last month it went straight through. I tried the payment last Friday, put in my card details clicked pay and the screen did the circle thing then the error message we cannot process your payment right now. I tried 2 hours later and same thing. But my bank app shows the 2 pending tesco mobile amounts still, as of 3 mins ago.

I _think_ the issue is on the Tesco side. The easiest thing might be to ask your bank what questions/things you need to say to Tesco to help them get it cleared. Your bank should know what Tescos will need to do but they can’t speak directly to Tesco on your behalf.
