Although its heart breaking some of the poverty in Africa is too. If you were left with the choice of slaughtering animals to feed your family would you hesitate? It's illegal of course and should therefore get a punishment as a deterrent. So some jail time? |

Is it down to poverty or is it greed?
Sadly a lot of people will pay a lot of money for ivory and the "traditional Chinese medicine" trade loves to grind up bits of endangered animals to make their useless potions. |

"Cab they not use the meat to feed people?
...i'm not quite sure that's the point. "
Why not. Famine in the country, elephants have been killed, use the meat from the elephants to feed some of the population.
If they can use the meat they could farm the elephants like we farm cows, then to subsidise the farming by selling legal, trackable ivory. |

"Surely this is not down to poverty. To carry out such monstrosities one would need vast resources & planning which mean they already have finances in place."
It means the gangs that control the slums have money, dish out the guns to those who are in debt to them and tell them to put their lives on the line or them and their family will suffer. |

The whole hunting/poaching is disgusting, thankfully it has dropped slightly as to what it was.
In some nature reserves in Africa, eg. the Massai Mara (spelling way off probably, sorry) employed some ex poachers and men from villages to protect animals so helped with poverty and hunting. Its a frightening trade and in some cases an everyday way to get money
Did anyone see about the whale vomit found on a beach up here the other day? It could fetch thousands of pounds if its real as its used in perfume. |

Ambergris. Yes, very valuable.
The only way to end this sort of poaching is to change the market. You can't "farm" elephants in the same way we do cows, if it were possible it would have been done. Such beautiful creatures. |

just another example of the stupidity of some within the human race..
think the only safe place for some of the endangered species is in reserves where they may be protected..
sad if thats what has to happen but necessary.. |

It's heartbreaking, yes, but I personally don't feel the need to get the pitchforks out and start branding people 'monsters'. Revenge is pathetic and silly and doesn't get an individual or a society anywhere. |

Being a vegetarian I feel there is no hypocrisy when I say - the slaughter of any animal for our gain is abhorrent - yet do many folk get in a state over elephants , badgers , whales etc ....
What's the difference ?
Just my opinion |

½ the world suffering with obesity problems, ½ the world suffering with starvation, the issue I have with Africa is they never seem short of weapons when fighting tribal / religious issues |

Problem is that the use of ivory in traditional Chinese medecine is deeply ingrained. If China is signed up to any kind of international anti-poaching treaties, they could be made to comply through the UN. |

Far too many people have made money out of the misery of others in Africa for far too long and sadly, it doesn't look like stopping any time soon. |

"Still can't forget the images of the ruthless murder of a family of 12 elephants in Kenya for their ivory.
What sentence would you pass on the monsters who did this?"

Providing a topic remains within the site rules, why can't a subject be discussed? |

Depends on who the revenge is aimed at
No it doesn't.
How do you know, have we met?
"
No, what does meeting have to do with it? |

Was staying in a village in Namibia once when a herd came through and ravaged the homes, crops and trees of a small group of villagers, destroying everything in some cases, homes, food, and so on.
Not to mention scaring the life out of everyone. It wasnt an isolated thing either. Lots of villagers arent so fond of them for this reason.
Just sayin'. |

Humans are just arrogant
We think we have the rights to do what we like to other life
We have wiped out hundreds of species and many many more are now on the brink of extinction
Animals killed for fun, for profit, their homes being chopped down and built upto as we move into their home lands
We kill them for food, for clothes for pleasure and to experient on them
I sometimes feel ashamed to be the 'intelligent species' but we will never change till we have wiped out everything, including our own kind |

Its a complex problem and animal welfare folks sit on one side of it and conservationists on the other.
Poachers aren't supposed to illegally go off outside what the governments set as culling figures to conserve environments but they do, cos the local people often hate the damn animals who are wrecking their crops and homes anyway.
You cant put a fence up to keep thirty tank sized animals out of your garden, your home, the field you've been tending for months.
