Oh I'm glad it's not just me! Someone I'd just met thought I was 30 as opposed to 26, then when complaining about it to my colleagues later, a newer member of staff thought I was in my mid 30's

Until a few years ago I looked younger than my years but now I fear that I probably look my age.Not sure what happened?

I don't have any grey hairs though which I find strange. Both my siblings were grey by my age.

I definitely feel about 150 though

I don't think people's expectations of age have caught up with modern day reality. With less of our lives spent outside, most of us in jobs that are physically less demanding than in the past, with access to sun cream and various other things to preserve the appearance of the skin, plus a later average menopause age for women, it's no wonder many of us don't "look our age". I think lots of us have skewed expectations of what 37 (in my case) looks like.

I look 37 because that's what I am.

I sort of agree. But there are people I went to school with, some of them look far older than me or other people from school do now, and some look like they never aged at all. People of the same age looking vastly different.

The way we dress, hair cuts, make up, as you say sunscreen etc all play a role in uping or downing our ages.

I definitely agree with the above about some people definitely say it to be polite, with a hint of perception of ages are skewed.

Society has always preferred women to look younger. Looking older (historically) probably meant you WERE older and therefore less fertile etc. Less of an issue for men and for men, looking significantly younger is actually often perceived as negative.

Yeah. I was chatting on another thread about this the other day. Of course I notice it more now than when I was younger. I find our attitudes to age very interesting

That's always been the case in some form though, think how old the tale of snow white is. That was pure jealousy of an older woman envious of younger beauty. It's just much more front and centre because the world is much more connected and allowed to be influenced. Especially women but there are tales of similar with men too.

I think it's instinct modernised, mixed in with the complexity of human self awareness. Similar to what KC said, it's about getting older in general. It's in the animal world too, in some species much more than others though.

When I'm feeling happy and loved, I've had a good night's sleep or a decent holiday, I dress in something flattering, and I pop a bit of lippy and eyeshadow on - I can easily pass for twenty years younger than my body is.

On a normal day, when I feel that I don't really have a place, I've had maybe three hours of bad sleep, it's four years since a proper holiday, I'm wearing threadbare jeans and a tee shirt that shows how overweight I've become, and my face looks like I've had skin grafts taken from something found frozen in the polar ice - I look like someone born during Queen Victoria's reign.
