I’ve got a friend who’s just complained he gets fed up of being disturbed by his work group on the WhatsApp app on his personal phone.

I told him to tell his employer if they want to contact him in via WhatsApp it should be on a work phone in work time.

He said that’s never going to happen.

Am I seeing this wrong here?

I did try that, I’m more surprised people do this on private phones though. Surely if work expect you to use it it should be on a work device?

I have work group chats on my personal phone- I just mute them when I’m unavailable.

And have set the boundaries with the team that while yes we talk in the group during our personal time, but there’s no obligation to read/reply.

Not really appropriate on a personal phone. Take it off.

I have notifications turned off on WhatsApp or it would invade my personal space too much . If it’s important they will call.

The only thing I'll respond to in non work hours is happy birthdays. They can't make you respond outside of work unless that's part of your contract

Mute. Then archive.

Double whammy.

Saves him a fuck load of headspace and he can check it just before work.

I’m the same, my phone is my phone. I’m amazed though at how many people accept this.

Are they paying him to respond in his private time? If not it should be on a company device during contracted hours only.

One of the perks of being really conscientious and good at your job is that they'll give you more work, the same money and start encroaching on your personal time.

Turn off read receipts . So stays on two grey ticks. Never goes blue. That way unless whoever is messaging you sees you are online . Phones may vary. On iphone can only see if person is online if reading a message from them.

The concept of work device is not present in all jobs or companies. I work in tech and I do have work device. But I have friends who also work in tech but in start-ups where there is no concept of work device. It's up to the employees to figure out how to separate. Muting groups is one way to go about it.

If any work people have my personal number I've blocked them on WhatsApp.

In France an employer is banned from contacting employees outside of working hours, and faces an unlimited fine if caught doing so.

Here it is your choice, I have never joined a work group and never will.

Depends on the nature of the job, the degree of on call required and why he doesn’t have a work phone.

Also given the mute function and set clear boundaries and to then complain seems a bit silly without further context

just somewhere around here

I dont allow work to intrude into my personal life full stop, work is just somewhere I have to go to earn money, I don't socialise or contact with people I work with in my own time, I have enough trouble being nice to the cunts when I'm paid to do so

I believe in France they passed a law in 2017 forbidding employers contacting employees in their off time.

Unlimited fine is the punishment.
