by the big field

By the time I hit my teens, mine had changed career twice, been a shop steward at a huge company, ran his own company then sold

It out and went in to something completely new, so I learnt that many things including you don’t have to be tied to one job/career your whole life and you can be successful in several if you’re not afraid to graft, tackle the shit others complain about but stand up for your own worth and value….and never be afraid to walk if others don’t see your value either.

Also, most managers probably know no more than you do, usually a lot less, they’re frequently styling it out and hoping for the best, often making a decision, sticking to it and working out who to pass the blame to if it fucks up- don’t be intimidated by anyone in a company at a higher level…they probably need you more than you need them. If you’re running a team, make sure the credit is given to those who deserve it, you’ll get more respect than taking it yourself- your job is to enable them to do theirs

To be less sensitive to the opinions of people who don’t matter

When I was a child I used to cry every day because of something mean that was said to me. I was a bit of a wet wipe.

I haven’t lost one tear nor missed any sleep over the opinions of people who don’t matter since I was about 8/9 years old

Love this! I have always managed my teams by saying “when things are great, it’s on you guys. When shit hits the fan, I’ll take it because it’s my fault” …… always had successful teams and hugely positive feedback.
