A question for all you inked people that have defaced your bodies and violated the skin with awesome art.

Are you a "my tattoos tell a story" or "just random idea" person with your ink?

I've been planning on getting some for a while, but always struggled on position, and design.

I'm getting closer to pushing myself to get it done, and looking for that spark to help my personal inspiration

Bit of both to be honest.

They've all had meaning bar one, which is just something I saw and liked.

For your first one I'd say get something which has meaning behind it as you're less likely to regret it later down the line if you don't get anymore.

But, as others may tell you, they can be addictive so be careful of Pringle-ing

I got mine just for having them and it almost became addictive sitting in the chair. One of mine still need to be completed but can’t seem to find the time for it now.

They have a meaning behind them. But I would get a tattoo just because I liked it. I found them all therapeutic and relaxing. Yes, even the ribs

Bit of both...

I feel I waited too long to get mine on reflection. Waiting to find the perfect one that I wouldn't regret.

My advice...do your research, then go to a tattooist with your idea see what they come up with that's unique to you.

Mine are very symbolic (phoenix & ravens, star of Inanna) and many people invest meaning into their body art.

That said, 'Wow, that would look amazing on me!' is entirely a legitimate reason to get inked.

Your tattooist won't care if there is a backstory or not. They just like good art and someone who will turn up on time, pay promptly and sit still.

Been looking at the work of Northern Black on Whitley Bay. Not really doing the whole Viking/Norse thing but they do amazing art.

The world need more good art.

I have been getting inked for 30 years and have some stuff that looked awful even at the time. Back street artiste doing flash work only. I have an orange lion as he didn’t have yellow!!

Mine now are things I like. My only advice is be willing to travel to an artist for a style you like. You cannot do enough research on your artist and need a good relationship with them as it’s all up close and personal

One of the best pieces of advice I got on the 'should I, shouldn't I' side of things is.

If you have an image in mind, get it printed up and stick it up somewhere prominent in your house. If after a year, you still go, 'Wow' and want it done. Do it.

The other tip is, take time to find the right artist. There are any number of websites with images of awful Tatts.

Find someone you feel comfortable with, check out their portfolio, and take the time to make sure they are hygienic and safe.

If you have a particular style of tatt in mind, find an artist who specialises in it if you can.

For example, colour is a really important factor in my tattoos. So I found someone who is able to shade with colour.

I wish you all the luck with your journy

I pick/design mine because I like the way they look but also usually because they have some kind of meaning. Whether thats because it reminds me of someone, a specific time in life or the position is symbolic. I have so many more to get as well - all of which have very specific meanings.

But I don't necessarily feel the need to explain them to people as to me art is subjective and I'm happy for them to glean their own meanings from them

Even the berserker Rune on my chest was from a story my grandad used to tell me. The constellation bears on the back of my wrists are for me and my daughter.

I’ve got one that was just a random piece of art I liked and the others around it sort of tell a story. Like I have 3 roses as they’re my moms fave flower and the three are one for my sister and two for my parents. Then I got some thorns to fill the space but it signifies like hard times I’ve been through and the leaves that grow off of them are showing that there’s been some growth from those hard times

I always used to wait a few months and see if I still liked the design before getting them done. Hasn't stopped me regretting a couple. More because I didn't realise that lines can spread so a couple of my early black tattoos have lost definition and don't look as good. As for the designs some have far more meaning than others. Bony bits and outlines always hurt me more than shading and squishy bits. Over the spine was the worst

Are there though? Since there will be plenty of them all with tattoos?

Currently fashionable? They have been for more than 20 years, they are just becoming more acceptable by the judgemental masses. I'd not call that currently fashionable.

Plenty of silly looking pensioners now, and I know which group I'd rather associate myself with.

Of the people we talked to (the majority being teenagers to twentysomethings), a whopping 78 percent regret at least one of their tattoos. And 19 percent of participants with two tattoos regret both.

Regret at least one - meaning it includes those that may have had a bad tattoo or similar and linked to a regret (a name maybe) skewing the majority being simply regretting their tattoos as a whole.

Only 19% with more than one tattoo regret both. Ummm 19% is not a majority.

I've no doubt some people regret getting a certain tattoo.

I know a few who have had a Blackpool special after a few drinks.

But in my own experience vast majority of people with tattoos do not regret it. Because they have given it a lot of thought ... about what they want and the placement.

No, silly

This is where you are very wrong...

What you're going to see when those tattooed people are pensioners is a group of happy people sat in a pub together reminiscing about their life and life stories and sharing stories about the canvas that is their skin and the reasons/stories behind them.

Over the other side of the pub will be far less people sat there with faces like a slapped arse and miserable that they didnt live life to the full.

Mine reflect the time when I had them done -- I didn't set out to tell a story, but they're not random scratchings either.

I've not got many, but they include spiritual symbols, philosophical quotes, animal rights slogans and traditional skinhead emblems -- so a bit of a mixed bag.
