Dealing with my fear of dentists !

Sitting here, yet again, rocking in pain and know I will have to do something about it..but in tears as the thought terrifies me. In the past I have been referred to sedation clinics by the GP , but I need emergency treatment so will have to try the emergency clinic at the hospital first thing in the morning.
I know the fear is irrational and I have dealt with worse many times both as a nurse and as a patient..I just wish I could get that perspective in my head when I'm in the dentist's chair !!

I know the feeling.. I avoid dentists at all cost.. Last time i went i nearly choked..
Went to put the anestetic in my gum but missed and was just squirting it down the back of the throat didnt help the fact he was holding my head down..
Needless to say i moved his hand.. Ended up spitting it out and accidently spat abit in his face and he said "that wasnt nice was it" all i could say was "do your fucking job right and i wouldnt have had too.. Cant be a good dentist if you nearly drown your patients with anestetic, tit head" walked out half covered in blood and spit and just left..
Never went back..
Sorry in know not making it any better lol.. But tis funny if you look at it a different way.. Always makes me giggle.. |

You say you have to go to the hospital for it, do they have the emergency doctor over there as well?
I dont have a fear of dentists but surely a good dentist will have come across this before.
Have a word with a nurse or hopefully a doctor when you get there.
All i can say is relax which i know is easier said than donme. Good luck |

Thank you, it's a dental clinic at a major hospital that runs the emergency service. Always a queue before they open so have to get there very early, but well worth the wait.

I feel for you darling. Have had horrendous experiences since childhood so no magic miracle advice from me.....just a big hug.

I have had a few horror stories in the past as well which is how I ended up with the phobia..it has eased a bit in that I can at least now walk in the building without having a major panic attack but last time I was sedated they kept having to tell me to breathe and I ended up needing oxygen afterwards. I can sometimes see the funny side of it..just not right this minute  |

I don't mind going to the dentist but I hate injections. Unfortunately many years ago, I broke a tooth at an angle, it was fine up until a few months ago when it got infected, my problem then was that the only way I could sleep was sat up so I booked an appointment to have it out including the day off work. My friend from here offered to come with me but because I knew I would cry, I said no thanks. Yes the needle hurt and I cried oceans but once the tooth was removed, I was no longer in pain and could lie down to sleep 
Unfortunately I then found a wobbly tooth in the top row and had to have that one removed, needle didn't hurt as much in the top as it had in the bottom where the broken tooth was.
My ex was the same as you and had to be sedated but then all his teeth were rotten from years of drugs and alcohol abuse, smoking too but he went and was getting them sorted.
Look at it from the perspective that once its done, you will be pain free anyway, sending hugs and kisses your way x |

I am in exactly that situation, I have been up all night, sitting up, so know I've got to go. I usually take a friend with me, but noone available at this short notice so going to try and do it alone. I've been putting it off for weeks so it's my own fault it has got this bad xx |

My mum is like this and the doc gave her really strong meds that were a bit like valiam but I can't rember what they were called lol she was hi as a kite the hole day and she said she remember even going to the dentist lol . I had to take her as she wasn't aloud to drive lol |

Yes I've done the diazepam thing in the past as well, but I can't today as driving myself there . I might need some by the time I get home though lol x |

Mornin, up untill last year i feared the dentist and caused by a misspent youth my teeth were in desprate need of work. The way i look at it now is the time spent in the chair is only a fraction of the time of sleeples nights and pill poping. I hope you can get over your fear and get them sorted. O it helps to have a hot dentist lol. |

Hiya, a friend of mine hates the dentist too, infact I've been with her on occasion too.
She tells me listening to music on her ipod helps take her mind off of what's going on ......... Good luck xx

I dont think many people enjoy the dentist and I certainly dont.
The factor that keeps me going regularly is that I dont want black teeth and my worst fear, having a missing tooth at the front. Id have dental treatment without any anaesthetic rather than decay in my mouth |

I had a friend who's trip to the dentist went wrong. It was just a normal extraction, but his jaw got a hairline crack that got infected. He had to have part of his jaw removed. Terrible. |

Not what the woman wants to hear Ben. 
Most people have a phobia about dentists, I think this comes from bad dentists and nasty memories....... But theyre not like that now. Theres not the trigger tv humongous needles. Theyve got little pen like things now. A friend of mine had 5 fillings NO pain relief 
Personally I think youre making the thing worse by delaying things. Come to Turkey I'll find you a great dentist, trust works wonders. I told my dentist Ive got a phobia if I raise my hand STOP and give me more pain relief and she did  |

I never get people who are scared of dentists
They will sit in pain for weeks and do nothing about it, what do you think they will do that's any more painful than what your already suffering?
Surely a couple if minuets of discomfort I'd worth getting rid of the toothache

Because you would need an anaesthetist on site and if anything went wrong with the anaesthetic, you wouldn't have access to emergency medical help. |

Do research and find a good hypnotherapist in your area. A good hypnotherapist will get rid of your fear of dentists in on session.
Also a good Emotional Freedom Technique specialist will get rid of your phobia. |

I have recently found a good dentists ( yes they are out there) As a person the guy is an arsehole, but he has never hurt me either giving injections or drilling. He even did a root canal and that was very painless, as well.
Shop around you mgiht find a decent one. |

last time i went (years ago)i had 3 jabs,as 1 don't work and i still felt it.he goes put your hand up if it hurts. i did but punch him in the face .was like ops sorry lol |

I didn't go to the dentist for the first time until I was 18 (parents never took me and I built up an irrational fear over the uears which wasn't helped by the Dentist movies and cartoons portraying them to be evil sadists!).
When I finally forced myself into it, I spoke to the receptionist and the nurse beforehand to make them aware that I was extremely nervous. The nurse said she would hold my hand throughout and if the pain ever got too much, I could squeeze her hand and she would tell the dentist to stop, which she did. They were both extremely kind and reassuring and my fear pretty much disappeared there and then (probably helped by the fact that my dentist was GORGEOUS!  ).
It's all about finding the right dentist. |

Well I went and I lived to tell the tale, although it was a very draining day both emotionally and physically. I managed to have the nerve removed and the root canal cleaned just with injection ..unfortunately that took over an hour as it was a difficult tooth apparently. The tooth itself cannot be saved and after all that is going to be removed under sedation in a week's time. They also found that when a previous tooth had been removed some of the root has been left in ,so that is now being removed as well ,which means my gum will probably need cutting.
I had tears, times when I had to be reminded to breathe and others when I was hyperventilating..BUT I did it. With driving to the hospital and the wait etc I was out for 7 hrs and a total wreck by the time I got home and my MS was playing up a bit. I was still in pain but took painkillers and a sleeper and had a good sleep and feel much better this morning.
Thanks for all the comments and good wishes, I surprised myself by managing to have the work done and although I will never like the dentist, maybe I can learn to tolerate it.
Anyway round 2 is on the 11th !! |

I'm glad that yesterday went ok for you and i hope the final part is not so bad.
I used to work as a Practice Manager in a Dentist's and i would suggest when all this is over try to find a Dentist local to you that is understanding and try to build a relationship in that you dont feel quite so stressed when you go.
Many times i have heard this and you will find that when you tell them you are very nervious about going most will make an effort to make it a lot easier for you.
Talk to a few people and try to find a name for an understanding Dentist.

oh you poor thing, but you did it, well done.
Try to remember, a dentist does not like to cause anyone pain, you are in control (even tho you sometimes feel like you are totally not in control)... if you raise your hand he/she will stop immediatly.
Gone are the days when dentist's were heartless.
If you can trust the dentist to stop as soon as you raise your hand then you will feel in control, that will remove a lot of the fear.

It will be once the work is completed. It was a long day and because I was still in pain last night I wondered why I had put myself through it..but today it has eased and I know I can cope with the rest as I'll be sedated. Even they have said it's too big a job to be done with local anaesthetic alone so I don't feel like I'm wimping out LOL |
