21 units a week

With the ever-growing discrediting of governmental guidelines, who here believes that 21 units of alcohol for a bloke and 14 for a female bloke is in any way accurate?

There is no account taken of an individual's overall physiology and family health history or indeed any other lifestyle factors like what one might do to mitigate the booze they consume (fluid intake etc).

I would think they can't give an estimate that will cover all body types, only an average.

But given that such emphasis is given to the link between alcohol and it's perceived damage to public health, surely there should be a more accurate approach.

We seem to have sliding scales for just about everything else.

Fluid intake does not mitigate against the damaging effects of alcohol it simply reduces your chance of dehydration. The guidelines are based on averages, so unless you are 7ft tall and 20stone or 5ft tall and 5 stone you can except them as as decent guidance. Remember it is just guidance, you can drink as much as you like if you don't think they are approximate enough for your lifestyle and body type.

I remember reading a few years ago that Dr Richard Smith, a member of the Royal College of Physician's working party who decided the limits of 21 units for men 14 for women, claimed they were just figures "plucked out of the air" by them.
