Is National Pride a Good Thing

I'm fiercely proud of being Scottish but my father and grandfathers fought shoulder to shoulder with Welsh, Irish and English men in 2 world wars so I'm also proud to be British and don't see anything wrong with either. |

Depends how you look at it. One way, it seems wildly irrational to be proud of where your mum happened to be when you popped out - something you had no control over whatsoever.
Another way, it's natural to identify with the people around you and stick up for each other. After all, they're the ones who are likely to be able to help you out later on if you need it as well.
Or maybe at it's heart it's about identity - people don't feel significant unless they're a part of something so they big up the idea of a nation in order to define themselves. Which seems a bit pathetic, really. |

Completely agree with your reasoning. After all if we were all genetically tested I'm sure we would find we're all multi-national. Nations were created by the powerful and wealthy to enslave those within their agreed man made borders.  |

Humans are pack animals and we function better as part of a cohesive unit with whom we identify.
My 'pack' happens to be British and if push came to shove and myself and another Brit found ourselves abroad amongst a foreign 'pack' baying for our blood I would defend my countryman even if I hated his guts. |

To be honest I wouldn't - a twat is a twat whatever their nationality and a British twat acting like a twat in another country won't get any help from me.
Overseas I find I'm equally proud and ashamed to be British (or English) but that goes with our history (and those fuckwits they show on late night TV programmes of Brits abroad). |

If we would only learn from our forefathers ( yes I know you only had one dad ) maybe the pride in ourselves and the children we leave to follow us maybe we would have more humility and make fewer mistakes but we must all have pride in the PEOPLE not some iconic flag |

It is the flag that soldiers rallied to in time gone past to fight a battle against an oppressive enemy who would enslave us (our forebears). That's what it represents, and to disrespect it is to disrespect every man or woman who has laid down their lives in defence of what it is and what it means. Our flag could have a picture of a bunch of daisies on it but it would still be our flag. |

I want to follow him, but didn't see which shopping centre he was heading out of. Was it the English one or the British one.
We once got into a debate with a meat head in a bar one night, who proclaimed - on the subject of language - 'there's only one language for me. And that's British'. We laughed until we saw he was being serious! Maybe its the same guy... |

Im very proud to be English my folks are both jocks but i was born in England.. Being proud of our Country is a mine field its easy to be called a racist or a pureist im neither i dont care for religion, n creed isnt an issue |

I do feel increasingly 'English' but it was good in the summer to feel British too. And as others have said I agree there should be an effort to take pride in the St. George's Cross, not represented by a minority of ignorant dipshits. |

all my grandparents are or were Irish, and i do celebrate paddys day, but i also celebrate st georges day as i am english, it seems to me because a lot of people have a chip on there shoulder about reclaiming the flag etc, that we celebrate it by getting d*unk, and being aggressive, obviously not everywhere, but in birmingham, were racial tension is relatively high, it seems to end in a lot of fights, which might be why people tend to stay away from it, Im obviously just talking from a working class inner city birmingham point of _iew, its probably better celebrated in say warwickshire or summer. |

Well, that's a very emotive slogan but there's no obvious reason to think it's true. It's quite common in life to respectfully disagree with someone's values, or to think (respectfully) that their values were appropriate for the time they lived in but not in the present day. |

well i think like a lot of island races we are a bit more proud of our nationality and heritage ,we have a lot of proud moments as people and in our history so why not.
ok so we talk up our importance on the world stage a bit, isn't it just "people propaganda", evident in every country in the world,the people coming together under a common tribal banner.
I actually think we are a bit too reticent to fly the flag, due to the colonial past and right wing hijack,but maybe that's just us Brits.

I am extremely proud to be British. I have several friends who have emigrated, mainly to oz and it really gets my goat when all they do is slag Britain off, infact anyone who slags Britain off. Yes it has its problems but I would rather live here than anywhere else in the world. |

national pride (taking pride in the advantages your country offers to you and the collective achievements of it's inhabitants) is fine.
nationalism on the other hand (militant attitudes that boarder on intolerant fascism of others that differ from that particular ideologies idealism of "patriot") in contrast is destructive , sinister and socially toxic..

Always believed that the land owns us an every thing on it.
Not the other way round, afterall it supports us if some nut don't distroy it.
Loved where I was born an grew up but it has been trashed by goverments and councls and greedy people.
So i have no national pride what so ever. |
