"I doubt people do it for fun. It's likely something they can't control."
Indeed, I'm that person... but coming (albeit briefly) to that realisation is liberating. |

Of only it was that easy. I don't overthink the small stuff but the big worries in life, like children business, yes I can overthink. But then it would be stupid to switch off and not give them a lot of thought. |

But if I don't over think, then that frees up time for more things. What if those things are for the forces of evil, and I become a worshiper of the evils that are beyond even Satan. Which then has me on an eternal downward spiral in to the corners of hell that no mortal returns, but you are twisted in to something demonic and void of any soul.
Oh wait, that's fab. |

"Just don't do it.
Life is fleeting."
Ok. Won’t do it from now on.
But what if I need to? I mean, sometimes we need to think a lot about stuff. Is that overthinking? Or is it enough thinking? Is there such a thing as enough thinking? Is that just thinking? But if it’s just thinking then how do I know if I’m little bit thinking, thinking, enough thinking or overthinking?
How do I know?!
Who decides? What if they’re wrong, What if I’m wrong? What if I’m right about being wrong or wrong about being right?
Who do I see to complain when it turns out I’ve thought about something to the point where I thought it was enough and anymore would be overthinking, but it turns out I hadn’t thought enough about it and should have thunk more but didn’t because I thought it would be overthinking?
Am I overthinking this? How do I know? How does anyone know?!
Anyway, I won’t do it anymore.
I don’t think. |

"I doubt people do it for fun. It's likely something they can't control."
Yeah it's unlikely anyone does it for kicks. But becoming aware is the first step in addressing it. And becoming aware might help in realising the impact it has on someones life and might help in motivating to address it.
It doesn't hurt to say one day all this will be over. |

Yes, exactly this. I'll never be spontaneous and a drop-of-a-hat decision maker. |

Me neither. I get it.
But in the finite time you're breathing do you not feel that these numerous small decisions are ultimately inconsequential? |

Yep, very much this.
I can easily fall into overrhinking the minutiae. Life is so much more fun when I don't and enjoy and appreciate the moment. Mindfulness I guess. I think sometimes overthinking can lead to self fulfilling prophecies - it's easier said than done but far more enjoyable to try and stop overthinking when you catch yourself doing it. |

It’s ok when you do it sometimes, but really good when you notice you’re not doing it and it’s a lovely break.
Some of us need that self reflection, but it’s good to make sure it’s not ruminating over stuff that’s not important.
I think I’ve over explained my overthinking |

And ruminating over stuff can often be a symptom. It was front and centre in my depression. Self reflection is a good thing, that can be how we help see ourselves and be accountable to ourselves.

"I'm glad you mentioned mindfulness. It's as not complicated as it's made out to be.
How?"
If you want to try mindfulness, check out the headspace app.
In some ways it is counter intuitive.
There's no magic to it. Just stop. Close your eyes, breathe. just concentrate on your breathing. Your mind is going to race and wander, come back to your breathing. Every time you realise your mind has gone pondering, back to your breathing
It's not going to work straight away and maybe not for everyone. But what have you got to lose by spending 10 fewer minutes on your phone everyday? |

It was like I said earlier... we're hugely complex beings...
It's about appreciating the moment . By doing so you don't let the past haunt you so much, and stop worring about the future as much.
Over-overcomplicated, electrified, bags of meat. We should be banging drums around a campfire tbh. |

I used to watch cartoons in the mornings to peace myself out.
Rolie Polie Olie and Hey Arthur were two of my favourites.
I would also feel happy in the laundry detergent and air freshener aisle.
Supermarkets are a good place to go to stop thinking.

Overthinking in the work place has caused me difficulties , mood swings , sleepless nights with one of my managers.I am no longer on her team and unless she says good morning, good night first I don’t respond to her at all. |

"Analysis paralysis?
For sure. It's just so easy to get hung up in that mindset though... as a general way of life.
It's not helpful."
It’s often a curse of so called smart people, but it’s not smart at all, inability to use other more creative methods to find a solution or resolve a problem.

Yeah it's not a nice thing to hear in the moment and maybe unwise to have said it. I've heard similar myself
But they have a point. I'm not saying they're right and maybe in crisis we do need help from outside. But no matter what someone says or does, the battle is won or lost between our two ears.
When our thought patterns are disruptive , negative and ruminative the only person that can effect change is ourselves. Others might guide or suggest but it's on us to first stop hurting ourselves and maybe then help ourselves. |

I do it and hate it. It is something I can't do anything about "
Have you ever tried anything to still thoughts , like properly giving it a go , a course/class etc not just a YouTube video.
I’ve never been an over thinker but have benefit massively from meditation, qigong and fasting.
It is possible to change your thinking |

I'd change 'can't' to 'haven't yet'
I don't recall who said it but I do like the phrase....
Stop thinking start living.
So many missed opportunities because of fear ..
In saying that - it's easier for those who are already comfortable in many ways to realise they have done enough thinking about something. |

How do you know it's overthinking?
You can spend all day trying to work out just how much thinking is optimal. When you probably could have spent that time thinking about the thing in the first place. |
