Water motor and plenty of pipe

for a penny

You need a pipe to get the water to it and a pipe to get the water away. Not the same pipe, though.

All over

You should be so lucky. They are busy for at least a year, you have to constantly beg, pay them over the odds and curtsey to them at all times and of you are lucky they may do you the favor of taking on the job (excluding any lovely plumbers on here of course)

And if they do decide to assist, they invariably fancy themselves

When I was 13, and it was a hot summer, I told dad I was going to make a swimming pool. So I got a spade and spent hours and hours digging a whole in the ground. It was hard bloody work. I think I managed to get it about 6 feet square and a couple of feet deep, before it got too dark. I settled for that. It wasn't quite the olympic-sized pool I had in mind, but it would do.

I grabbed the garden house and proceeded to "fill 'er up".

It didn't work.

The water just drained through the soil.

As the last vestiges of light drained from the sky, I told my Dad and he said, "It was never going to work, as you discovered".

I was flipping livid and parents wonder why kids develop trust issues. I never really liked him after that.

You dug the hole and tried to fill it up. What did your dad do wrong ?

That's funny... I like to think he watched you from the house whilst darkly chuckling to himself

You need a stopcock, flange and a lot of grease.

"What did your dad do wrong ?"

Failed in his basic duty to guide me accordingly and tell me what a stupid idea it would be and more importantly why. Rather than waste a whole day.

He could have said "This plan won't work because of X. By all means try it, but you are doomed to fail. Spend the day out on your bicycle instead, or take the horses out for a canter in the woods. Shoot some rabbits or something. But if you are really set on this idea, I will show you how to make it work and we'll get some bin liners and pad out the bottom and sides. It may not be perfect, but it might just work."

That's just watching your children flounder, and not nice at all. That is what he did wrong. (Amongst many other things).

Sadly, it wasn't something I enjoyed much either, but along with rats in the barns causing havoc and the bunnies also digging up the fields, it was a part of rural life.

I was bloodied as well on my first hunt at 13. I refused to ride after that and wanted nothing more to do with "those people". Yuk.

You need my cat, she's a murdering little madam. Most nights the garden is littered with mostly mice bodies, occasionally rats, lately young rabbits

She sounds like quite the savage hunter !

Which does make me wonder, who takes after who ?
