Councillors have rejected proposals to exhume and relocate a dog buried at the former base of the Dambusters put forward amid concerns about the suitability of the grave’s location once the site is repurposed as accommodation for asylum seekers
The black Labrador whose name was a racial slur, belonged to Wg Cmdr Guy Gibson, leader of RAF 617 Squadron which carried out the famous Dambusters raid of 1943
Raf heritage told planners “we believe the grave site is at risk and carries significant reputational risk given the racial slur now associated with the dog’s name.” |

They need to go back and rewrite history as well then as the word was the codeword used and sent by morse code to confirm the breach of the Möhne Dam.
Looking back it does make me shudder how freely words were banded about but that was how it was at the time.

I wonder what completely innocuous words will be frowned upon in 70 years time?
Brazier perhaps? Maybe human will be frowned upon. |

It was not a racial slur at the time in the UK.It simply meant the colour black as in coal.In Elizabethan times the word was spelt Negar,it meant black but was used to differentiate between people from Africa and those from the near East/occupied Spain the "Moors" or "Blackamoors".The actor Burgess Meredith (most famous for playing Rocky's trainer) did an information film for US army troops stationed in the UK,explaining the different attitude to black people in the UK compared to a racially segregated USA,no mention of the word, instead it was "the coloureds".Amongst black people of the time the word was not a slur, but "house n****r" was, meaning a servant/cleaner/dogsbody of the white home owner rather than someone who worked outside on the land, forced labourer or freeman. |
