I've started back at the gym (again!) but I find it so boring. I find myself watching the seconds go by when I'm on the bike/rower/treadmill etc.
I used to attend exercise classes such as combat and HIIT which I absolutely loved and never once felt bored or lost motivation but they aren't on anymore.
What do you do to keep yourself motivated and keep the momentum of going to the gym and doing exercise whilst you're there? Listen to certain music? listen to a podcast? Get inspiration from those around you?
Looking for some ideas please. |

Well done on going back. The hardest part is always walking through the door in the first place.
I don't go anymore but when I did it was good music and always trying to be better than my last visit.
I did always feel better for going too.
It can be so hard to stick with though (as I keep demonstrating over the years) so well done you. |

It is boring. I swim a mile most days (64 lengths of a 25m pool)
But without it, I'd be lost, my mental health would suffer. So I don't really think anything. Sometime I sing in my own head.
Its about going through the motions. |

Good for you for getting back in the horse so to speak!
The key for me is variety - mix things up. And I have to have something to listen to on the cardio machines.
Currently I head to Mixcloud and listen to old Radio 1 shows from when I was a teenager. Or listen to an audiobook, where you have to concentrate and listen so you kind of forget you’re exercising.
Good luck with it, I hope you can find something that keeps that motivation fresh |

Well done for getting back at it! It's not easy to go back after a while but you've already smashed it by going!
I'm not gonna lie, it's boring as fuck but my mental health and how much better I feel keeps me going along with seeing the visual difference to my body
As far as during the exercise goes, I like to listen to a podcast during cardio and music during weights. Angry, I'm going to pick this up to spite everyone kinda music |

Well done on getting back to it. The hardest part is showing up!
Cardio is dull. But rather than doing a steady 30 min cycle, maybe try short bursts of really high intensity sprints. 20s sprint, 40s rest or something like that. I find it's easier to focus as you're not just going through the motions, but might also feel more like the HIIT classes you liked?
If you just to improve cardio fitness, have you thought about a sport you like? |

Truthfully find a type of training that you enjoy and look forward to and don’t have to motivate yourself to do. I’d personally just use walking/getting the steps in as the cardio part of the routine and replace the cardio at the gym with a structured weights routine that focuses on progressive overload ( progressive overload makes training more fun as well as far more effective) the results will be far better as well than just focussing on cardio |

I hate the gym so so don't go. Felt like a wee hamster on a wheel in a room full of other wee hamsters on a wheel.
So I exercise at home. Good tunes blasting through my blue tooth ear phones and YouTube videos. The amount of free workout vids is incredible. |

Thank you everyone for all your comments and thank you for the recognition on how hard it is to make the step to go back.
I do mix it up quite a lot and only do 15 mins max on the bike, then do weights, then the rowing machine. I change the routine so I'm not doing the same every time I go.
Think I may invest in some headsets and listen to a podcast/music, that may help.
I totally get those of you who say it helps your mental health, it really is such a huge benefit to both mental and physical health, I really feel the benefits. |

Music definitely helps! I have far too many playlists (with dubious titles) based on my ever changing moods.
Even simple things like making sure I have clothes ready the night before, having a degree of accountability by discussing it with a friend and feeling that ever mounting sense of guilt if my bum isn't out of the door by a certain time. I've yet to start fully enjoying it but sometimes I get those endorphins and try and remember that when I'm feeling lacklustre about going again. |

I find music helps a lot!
And also watching something, youtube or whatever, takes my mind off the running.
But then I also tend to set myself goals, like up the speed by 0.1 kph every km, by 0.2 kph every 10 minutes, things like this. Keeps me pushing.
I also end up counting seconds, and increasing the speed when I have like... 300 s to go, 200 s, 100 s, 90 s, ... |

I simply don’t do it if it’s boring , there’s no point it ain’t going to last.
Go back to the classes or try something else.
Progressive overload is fantastic if you want to gain muscle but if you’re doing it right you eat everything in sight ! I gained 15kg doing it |

If you are using a Concept rowing machine, find out how to set a pace boat to row against and set your display to show, "average pace per 500M" That will keep you focused on the feedback from every single stroke. |

It's not enjoyable but it's good for you mentally and physically.
I hate going out on my bike in the winter, all the preparation with the multiple layers. The cold rain and traffic.
But my motivation is all the implications of not going out. So I have no choice, I have to. |
