Ancestry DNA tests are done by comparing your DNA with others that the company has in their database. Therefore there can be wide discrepancies between results, depending on which company you use and how comprehensive their database is.
It’s basically a vanity thing and not really worth much. |

"Yes did it and gutted there were no surprises except 2% Scandinavian. Maybe a few Viking relatives in the past?
Which company did you use?"
Ancestry... They break it down in percentages. I was mainly from various areas of UK. Small percentage Irish and the 2% Scandinavian. Was hoping for something more surprising and exotic |

So would you recommend any other company? |

I would love to do this to be honest. I think it's fascinating although I'm pretty sure my mum's side is Devonshire farmers back to the dark ages. Dad's side might be more interesting |

I'm not giving my DNA to anyone without appropriate court approval
I've done family history stuff. I'm mostly English, a good chunk Irish, and a smidgen freed (person as property) from the West Indies. |

"No surprises about where either of our families come from.
We did find out some interesting stuff though
Who did you use?
Ancestry
"
We didn't use Ancestry . Mr N has just reminded me we used My Heritage. Sorry |

I already know I'm Heinz 57, and DNA profiling confirmed it. I am from most parts of the World. I am only missing Central and Southern Africa, (got Madagascar though), Southern India, Siberia and the Antipodes..
My ancestors got around |

I am trying to make the point that no company can be entirely accurate.
The best you can do is use every company’s database and compare the recurrent traits. Each one will have traits that don’t appear in someone else’s, so you either ignore those or pick the ones you like. |

"98% English 2% French
I was hoping there'd be some African or Pakistani to piss off my racist dad.
Only 1 race in the world mate...can you guess what race that is "
We lack imagination. Could you enlighten us? |

I recently got an email from my GP surgery asking if I'd like to take part in a national DNA sampling thing. I signed up for it, and once completed I'll get to see the results from it too |

Sorry, it was actually a text link - Discoverme is the study name. So, if your GP practice is signed up to it, you may get an invite to participate too |

Oh my days
Actually on reflection it may link me to my father's second family... And i am sure there may be others lol |

Layed in bed. Thought I'd have one last look at the forums before I roll over (like one of those motorway hotdog salmonella things) and now because of the title of this thread. I have the theme tune to Dad's Army in my head!!!
Someone put me out my misery. I'm on my 10th rendition. |

I want to do it. I know my grandad was half Chinese and id love to find out more about that. And I believe my Nan had Jewish ancestry.
My knowledge is that my family are from Jamaica but I’m black. So I’d love to know more about where in Africa I’m from. It’s so hard to follow that stuff via documents so an ancestry test would be fun in that sense. |

It’s funny my Chinese ancestry came through strong in my daughter. Multiple people asked me when she was much smaller if her mum is Chinese or East Asian (She’s not) |

No DNA sample without a court order.Dont trust where it is going to end up.No I am not avoiding a past crime.Good old fashioned family tree research is good enough, plenty of resources out there. |

Not in every case. It depends on your heritage. A lot of our records aren't available |

Not remotely interested. I've disowned the family I have now, why worry about the ghosts of the past. Being no stranger to a glory hole I've have had lots of nationalities in me ;-p |

"Has anyone ever done these DNA tests, to see where their family is from?
Any surprises? Shocks?
Would you ever do this?"
I keep hinting at this for a pressie - might treat myself at some point.

Yeah I did a DNA test and found out I’m 100% from pleasure island |

100% Swedish/Scandinavian. Some would probably go like "Raaaah, Viking!" but half of all men in Sweden belong to the same line. Does make me related to Alexander Hamilton and General Robert E Lee. So time for a musical rebellion, in longships. |

I'm unlikely to be surprised as I know I'm a bit of a mongrel. I know for sure that there's all manner of European ancestry (mother's side) along with some Middle Eastern, Slavic and North African (father's side) so I wouldn't be shocked to find even more. |

Not done a DNA test but know for fact due to my blue blood
I was taken as child I'm royalty
And left with this poor family to be brought up . |
