"I wish the North East could do the same."
It has been talked about in the past... I would rather we stayed together but I must admit I can see why people want to be away. |

Set them adrift, I really cant see how much that would impact the rest of the UK. Same goes for mainland Scotland, as much as I love the Jocks, if that's what they want, let them have it but I know who'll be the losers. |

"Is this the beginning of the end for the British Empire?"
Best not tell all the Irish home rule peeps about The Empire beginning to end. It might start independence movements in the outer colonies like Australasia, Canada and Caribbean, Indian subcontinent, and even East Africas.
It is 2023, not 1823 |

I think this thread (independence) is about politics is it not? But yeah we could write big essays on the subject if we're not careful |

there a much longer and better supported campaign for NI to leave the uk. I do think if it fails it won't be lack of support in NI. I think if it fails it will the refusal of Ireland to accept it. But yeah, anyway orkneys.
But all the independence movements would be weakened by the Uk rejoining the EU. That's a delicious irony. |

Orkney is a rate case but generally the decimation if political nionsand admitedly flawed demicracies is part of a corperate take over. Small ndependent states will have to compete for the liusy jobs corperations offer and the wages paid will be one bargaining chip, environmental controls another. Devolution of power inside political unions may be stronger. No mistake nasty rupert murdoch pushed leave in england and eales, remain in scotland. Two unions damaged with obe iniquitous teferendum. The outcomes so far so loysy |

If anyone wants independence let them have it,but it's independence warts 'n all.No Sterling, get your own Army/Navy/Air Force etc and good luck with Spain if you want to join the EU.Spain has repeatedly told Scotland they will Veto an independent Scotland joining the EU because that will set a precedent allowing the Basque region to leave Spain but join the EU.Funny how the SNP don't mention that at all but when it is mentioned to them they claim "Spain doesn't really mean it". |

It's an interesting thought but it may be little more than the local council there aiming to get more money or power. Certainly, only they will know what they really have as their objectives.
Perhaps an island state like Guernsey, Herm or Sark. |

I’d vote to join Scotland…. But if we can’t even get our shit together to vote for regional devolved government.. then we seal our own fate |

"Some pretty offensive statements on this thread regardless of them being 'tounge in cheek' or not."
If you’d spent a year in Orkney being shunned, ignored and at times verbally abused as I was then you may understand my dislike of the place.
As I said…insular cnuts. |

"I wish the North East could do the same."
So do most of the rest of the UK but we have to tolerate you.
It's just silly & bandwagon jumping try & gain funds by the Orkneys.
Most of the Islands are frustrated by the SNP's mismanagement of their Ferry services etc. The SNP are only focused on independence so sadly forgot or never understood how to run the whole of Scotland as a government.

Interesting they are not being criticised for /accused of lack of inclusivity and diversity.Borderline and actual racism, bigotry and everything else that gets thrown at English people who want to keep their cultural beliefs and identity. |

Does the isolated community / different culture excuse them from turning their backs and muttering English prick every time I walked into a pub or shop?
That is what happened on an almost daily basis.
They have a smiling face in the tourist tat shops but if you go and do a job of work up there which incidentally no one was locally qualified to do that smiling face is turned away from you and your windows will be smashed. |

"What British Empire?
The one that still exists in the imaginations of some?
Yep the bigoted narrow minded ones"
The ones who think it was a good idea to give the empire the industrial revolution, railways,India and Pakistan it's democratic system, end the Thugee cult and the Sutee bride burning, sacrifice over 17,000 Royal Navy personnel in the fight against the forced labour trade(the actual word is not permitted in forum)plus Army personnel, expand Indian cotton so we didn't have to use Southern US cotton during the civil war thereby depriving the Confederacy of the funds to fight, the list goes on.....but if you want to airbrush out parts of history you don't like have a look at who else has done that first,Hitler,Stalin,Pol Pot,Mao and the Chinese are still doing it. |

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest |
I visited the Orkneys once. Beautiful place. Much like the north Highlands (Caithness) only with much better roads.
I understand they're complaining of under investment on the part of the UK and Scottish governments. I think many other parts of the UK could say the same.
Don't see how becoming a part of Norway round make much difference. I believe they're exploring other scenarios such as the crown dependencies of channel islands / Isle of Mann. |

You sound disappointed they didn't acknowledge your right to deflower their firstborn.
Seriously island living is a life apart. I used to regularly go to an island off the west coast of ireland, they're guarded and insular. Never held it against them though. Takes a long time to be trusted. Of course they love tourists, they come and spend their money and are good enough to go back to where they came from. |

As I understand it, Orkney islanders are vehemently oposed to an Independent Scotland and would prefer to reamin part of the United Kingdom and that this is their response to the question of Scottish independence |

"Set them adrift, I really cant see how much that would impact the rest of the UK."
The North Sea oil industry relies on Orkney and Shetland, and the most important production areas would be within their territorial waters if they left. Even if we accept that oil and gas are declining in importance, the effect on the industry caused by such a change would have far reaching consequences for the whole of the the UK. |
