Motorway drivers
Jump to: Newest in thread
This last few weeks had to spend a lot time up and down m6 m1 and m11 and few other roads !!!
I wish you could ram Middle lane drivers mile after mile left lane empty or going same speed as them just sit there !!!! Even had one driver sat right hand lane each time some got behind him flashing lights pull over to middle lane then back to right hand lane not overtaking just sat there.
Driving motorway should be either part of test or compulsory lesson. |

I think driving is often bad on motorways full stop. Been on most UK motorways at some point. It did improve for a short while after middle lane hogging became a specific offence. |

I was lucky when I passed my test in 1990, that my Instructor followed up with 2 hours of Motorway tuition, and then in Winter months when it snowed, did further tuition in snow/icy road driving.
But like any driving these days, it just seems to be more of a "get out of my way" attitude, by aggressive drivers, who aren't caring about other drivers! |

I passed my test 34 years ago when there was none of this theory side to it. It was a 30 mins drive where the examiner would smash his clipboard on the dashboard as a signal to perform am emergency stop, then back to test centre where you would be asked two questions out of the highway code handbook. That was it.
I never went anyway bear a motorway until I had my licence. |

I’m no expert, although I have been driving a long time, never had an accident and couldn’t count the number of miles over the years; that said, there’s three things that would improve UK roads instantly….
Make all lanes the same on motorways and allow overtaking and undertaking. On the M25 and M20 specifically it’s normal behaviour to dodge the European lorry drivers who don’t care; no more middle lane hogs or outside lane dangerous drivers, we’ve all experienced them!
Also, make left turns on a red light if safe to do so, this is normal in America (although it’s a right turn) and a lot of Europe, would keep traffic flowing.
Finally, stop allowing developers to build houses and retail without paying for road upgrades; anyone who lives near the Trafford Centre in Manchester knows exactly how much of a curse the place is for locals! |

I travel a lot on the motorway and always come across lane hoggers. Even at 2am in the morning you will get them sat in the middle lane doing 65, WTF is wrong with these people. No amounts of flashing will make them move.

I travel on the M3 , M27 quite often to go sea fishing. This means coming home very early hours of the morning. This driving home between 1am and 3am.
Although not that many vehicles on motorway. I have seen vehicle in outside lane or middle lane doing less than 70mph. Causing undertaking etc.
Yet highway code states stay in left hand lane unless overtaking. Some seem to think still . Near lane on motorway is for slow vehicles / lorries. |

"I drive in the middle lane just because I know it winds a certain type of person up.
Great fun and it’s free "
In case anyone reading isn't aware of the current law then its certainly not exactly "free".
Hoggers are likely to face a £100 fine and three penalty points, and if they end up being charged with careless driving, an unlimited fine and three to 11 points on their licence.
Not cheap! |

How many people have actually been fined or had penalty points for this??? Musing out loud, not expecting the data from your freedom of information request |

Yeah middle lane hoggers are the worse. And it's worse on 4 lanes. People still drive like they are on three ways. People have no lane disapline they are over taking Lanes not slow middle and fast. Even though that's what everyone calls them
And make way for bikers in traffic jams. People In Europe make way for emergency services and bikers. Here people just stop were they want not pulling over or anything. Driving in general has got worse since the Pandemic |

We do a lot of motorway travelling and there’s a special place in hell for the middle lane hogs!
We’re up and down the M62 all the time and it’s horrific

"When riding the bike, I prefer to hog the middle lane, as I have two possible escape lanes to use should anything happen in fornt of me."
If that is your primary reason then you should drive on the inside lane as that alap has two escape lanes and one of them is virtually never used so you will be much safer by going left. |

I spend a lot time with a trailer for work on motorways . With trailers same as caravans cannot go 3rd lane so it's either undertake or sit behind middle lane hogger doing 65 |

The speed limit for a trailer is 60mph so not sure why someone so going 65mph is an issue for you |

Recollections may differ! I took the test 40 years ago. So it will be the same as yours. You had to learn the entire highway code as there was no telling which questions you'd be asked and that included motorway driving rules and regs.. and the examiner asked a range of questions not two.. |

I used to travel all over Britain for work
As they reduced the number of visible trafic police on the motorways you could see the standard of driving decreasing. |

Annoys me as well. But, sadly, the world is just full of c***s. Selfish people who live in their own little bubble and couldn’t give two shits about anyone else. Easy enough to say, but I think we all just need to find a way of not letting it get to us. They can’t be reasoned with because they have justified their actions in their tiny little minds.
Or kill them all….
When I passed my test, my dad booked me two hours motorway driving tuition because he hated the standard of driving on the big roads. That was 30 years ago and won’t have got better!
PS - it is illegal to drive on a motorway until you have passed your test.
PPS - I’m perfect. I thank you. |

There was supposed to be a clampdown on this years ago, but didn’t seem to be implemented to any real extent.
Re motorways though, how is it that some people drive at well over 100mph? I feel like I’d lose my license if I drove like that for about 5 minutes. |

"Get on the M25 between the M3 & M23 & endless Anderson Lee cars heading for Gatwick to pick up sitting in lane 3 of 4 doing 50/55mph.

I always find that extra caution is needed when driving anywhere near Heathrow, as taxis, ditherers and people who are a bit lost are prone to late and dramatic lane changes. |

Whilst I agree that people should return to the left lane after overtaking. I have witnessed some bizarre behaviour from people clearly incensed by making the point to others.
Yesterday, I saw a guy get up the backside of someone in the middle lane. He could have overtook them on the right no issue. Then to make a point, he undertook the guy. Ignoring the fact they had moved over to let in vehicles joining the motorway. He narrowly missed a lorry joining, which he didn't see as he was giving the other guy the finger.
Then there's the weaving in and out of the left lane every 5 seconds people. So many close calls witnessed on that one. As they miss the person returning from the right to the middle, in their blindspot.
Raging drivers are the biggest issue in my opinion. They cause accidents. And then the annoying person in the middle lane you overtook 20 minutes ago, suddenly rolls up next to you in the next traffic jam. Still in the middle lane. |

For me, the biggest fuckup on motorways is when the driver of one articulated truck decides that it’s really important that he overtakes another articulated truck, and spends 5 miles in the middle lane executing this manoeuvre, going 1mph faster than the other truck |

ok I have never understood this. if you are going the motorway speed limit what is the problem? I totally agree if they are pootling along at 60 or whatever but if I am going the maximum allowable speed then you shouldn't be overtaking me anyway! |

What gets me is the number of people who fail to understand that when you sign your driving license you are making a declaration to keep yourself up to speed with changes in road traffic laws etc.
This is particularly evident following the introduction of smart motorways and the hoards of people who haven't educated themselves about them and learned how to use them - clear by the huge numbers of drivers ignoring the changing speed limits.
Many might say 'Don't know why the speed limit is reduced when there's no reason for it' blissfully unaware that the reason why the speed limit is reduced is to slow the flow of traffic so that you never actually encounter the cause of the problem and that is can be cleared by the time you reach it.
But then a lot of people also fail to understand that the driving test is the minimum standard you should drive at. So many people develop bad habits after they pass their test and think they're the greatest drivers on the planet.
There's always room to improve |

What do you want the driver to do, keep backing off, follow with limited visibility?
Tesco, Sainsbury's, Maritime & others restrict their trucks to 50 or 52 but when empty maintain that speed so if overtaking on undulating roads impact a heavy lorries momentum you can see the issue.
Not sure if you use shops or fuel stations but guess how the goods got there. |

The nutters where out yesterday for sure, I think the hot weather and delays make them worse
Driving in the middle lane ( I know shoot me now) up the M40 at about 80 overtaking cars and trucks on the inside when passing me at over 100 comes some wide boy in an Audi RS who then cuts into the middle lane missing me by a matter of inches, undertakes the guy in the outside line then straight back to the outside at high speed, he then repeats the whole thing again about 5 cars ahead
Less than 3 miles later another 100mph + from the outside lane across all three lanes and up the slip road before locking up all 4 wheels, lots of smoke and lucky that they don’t kill themselves or someone else
It is definitely getting worse, maybe it’s since covid and people not going to work in offices they all forgot how to drive |

At least you can get around them easily. It’s the rolling wall of HGVs right up each other’s arse at the motorway exits that annoy me or when they take 10 minutes to overtake the only very slightly slower HGV in lane one. Feckers! |

That's what you get when they don't overtake. HGV drivers have restricted hours via tachograph so every minute really can count.
They can't just do 5 or 10 mins over because they got delayed.
You all get your milk, butter, eggs etc etc etc but have no consideration to the huge infrastructure getting it there.
Ban the trucks! Cut their numbers!
Make them move at night!

Get a dashcam. Then you can submit the videos of bell ends like that to the police. Many forces now have the facility to submit dashcam footage under safer roads initiatives. |

When someone comes up behind me in the middle lane flashing their lights I always move up into the fast lane so they can go on their way.
It’s so easy to wind this type of sad little stress head up and it’s great fun.

Hi. Yes, I know that trucks are used for deliveries. In fact, I have seen this happen many times.
What should drivers do instead of the 5 mile overtaking manoeuvre? Maybe just stay behind the other truck and drive 1mph slower? Only overtake if the vehicle in front is going significantly slower? You know … the way most motorists behave? |

Same here … traffic slows right down, you get a good view down the road and realise that the entire cause of the snarl-up is that an articulated truck is spending several miles dragging its arse past another one that is going at almost exactly the same speed. |

I'm a frequent motorway driver. I have to say, the M25 is the worst in the country try I've seen for lane discipline. People just sat in lane 3 or 4 for mile after mile doing 67mph. Or overtaking and refusing to move back over to lane 2. Happily slowing down the entire motorway network.
I like to look over at them as I eventually pass to see if they look as stupid as they drive |

Fuck all to do with the numbers of trucks on the roads, it’s how they drive, much like other inconsiderate drivers only the effect is greater because of their size. Only this afternoon I was on a two lane roundabout to exit onto dual carriageway when an attic entered in front of me without stopping. Cheeky I thought but as I could exit on the offside lane I wasn’t too bothered. Then the silly bastard came right across me and other traffic already on the roundabout to take an exit further round. As I said, feckers. |
