"The beatles were shit
Pioneers of rock & roll, always have been & always will be the greatest.
Each to their own though "
I kind of think The Beatles were greater than the sum of their parts. Has Macca written a decent song in the last 40 years?. John is difficult to define, did Yoko make him better or worse? In retrospect George wad probably the better songwriter of them. |

Macca's wrote some great songs in the last 40 yrs, his albums Chaos & Creation in the backyard, and also Flaming Pie, have some awesome tunes on there. Two of my favourites are Every Night & Calico Skies.
Yoko made John different to an extent, but she guided him back to his art school day rates, with her avant garde style of art. And not forgetting he has some fantastic solo work.
George is just George, struggled to make an impact initially when having to compete with such a powerhouse of a writing team. But came good in the end, although his solo work is not as good as Lennon's or Macca's in my personal opinion.
You forgot poor Ringo! |

"The Beatles, and even worse Paul McCartney. The first mass-marketed, over-hyped group."
Your right about The Beatles Firsts:
First band to conquer America
First to conduct Stadium tours
First to use feedback on a record (I Feel Fine)
First satellite broadcast (All you need is love)
First use of backward recording technique on a record (Rain)
And thats without all the records they still hold, bands they have influenced etc. Over a billion record sales speaks volumes in itself.

Yes ... I can't think of a better drummer than Ringo Starr ... what skills. And, as for John Lennon and Paul McCartney, what great voices they had .... highly skilled. |

I think Macca & Lennon had great voices personally, songs such as Blackbird, Day in the life, She's a woman, Sexy Sadie, all prove this. Its like most things in life, people like to knock the thing thats top of the tree. Most Beatle haters knowledge of them usually extends to Love me do & Yellow submarine, not saying thats the case here, but it happens lots |

I grew up listening to the beatles all the time. my parents were big fans and I am not a hater I just don't believe they're as good as people say. in the late 60's the Byrds were just as good. And Macca isn't a great songwriter. Its all Moon/June/Spoon. Third year poetry. |

As you said earlier each to their own, but you shouldn't assume that just because someone dislikes the Beatles that they know little about them.
I put them in the same catergory as Boyzone ,Westlife and Take That. All much loved by teenage girls and people that are easily influenced by popular culture. |

The Byrds, were good too, also The Who, The Kinks & Small Faces. Lots of great bands, and my favourite era for music.
I don't think you can class songs such as 'I am the walrus', 'Tomorrow Never Knows' 'Helter Skelter' and the like as being predictable, lovey dovey, or Moon/June/Spoon hee hee. Granted their early stuff was boy band material, but it was not their essence. And yes it was manufactured by Epstein to appeal to a set audience, but the difference then was that both teenage girls & boys adored them.
As an example of Macca's songwriting skills, 'Yesterday' is the most covered song of all time, but he's wrote some classics....you never heard the frog chorus?
Feel like this is overtaking the OP's thread. Sorry I shall stop now |

The Beach Boys weren't too bad either. They came onto the scene not long after The Beatles (1965 I think). My son and his mates seem to be more familiar with their music than The Beatles. But they did puta litlle more into their songwriting and musical arrangements ... I will now duck below the parapet. |

Pet Sounds - Influenced by none other than The Beatles Rubber Soul
''I really wasn't quite ready for the unity. It felt like it all belonged together. Rubber Soul was a collection of songs ... that somehow went together like no album ever made before, and I was very impressed. I said, "That's it. I really am challenged to do a great album." - Brian Wilson
Sorry couldn't resist that one hee hee

"Name your three worst middle of the road, bland & boring groups ever!
Bon Jovi
Meatloaf
Europe
"
Totally with you on those three, although I'd be tempted to squeeze Queen in there. Meatloaf is number 1 though without a shadow of a doubt.
On the subject of Europe, one of the blokes I work with was in a band years ago and won a completion on radio Sheffield, after which they were promised a recording contract. However, at the last minute the record company pulled out and gave the contract to another band which turned out to be Europe, who then went on to poison our ears with their odious drivel.
Now whenever they come on the wireless one of the other kids shouts "Mike's song's on, turn it up!" |
