Ok so firstly please dont bash me or judge me as i just need advice from fellow people who have experienced this. Late last year i was really unwell for a good 4 weeks and my immune system pretty much shut down and had my first cold sore outbreak which was unpleasant. I took Aciclovir and it cleared up. I had my cervical screening test 2 weeks ago and a few days later a cold sore developed again. I did a bit of research and excessive heat can cause this and i was out in the sun a lot! This cleared up within a week. I have just had my cervical screening results back and i feel like crying but i dont know why. The results say HPV positive but no abnormal cells and to return in 12 months for another smear. Ive googled like crazy but not much really comes up. What does this actually mean. Please help x |

The doctor really should have explained but here a link to the NHS for proper advice: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/human-papilloma-virus-hpv/

You should not worry about this."

I had it when I had my 1st smear, I did have abnormal cells and had them treated, but my past 3 smears have all been clear, it can disappear on its own and in most causes no issues.
Try not to worry.

Try not to worry too much. Your smear is clear so that’s a positive in itself. I had HPV and abnormal cells, I required a biopsy to get rid. On my last smear I had low grade changes which they weren’t worried about and to go back in 12 months (I’ll admit I’m late going back due to work commitments etc).
If you want more information on, speak to your Gp and ask for an appointment with your practice nurse.

Most people who have it will have no symptoms, and even when you’re safe it can pass via skin to skin, please don’t put yourself down. |

I had hpv present a couple of smears ago and I had abnormal cells too. So I had to have a colposcopy and then have annual visits and tests as appropriate. Yesterday (18 months since first dodgy smear, second time at gynae clinic) she said everything looks good and I had a smear and just need to await the results of the smear. She wasnt concerned at all so I’m expecting smear to be back to normal cells and maybe hpv present or maybe not.
The important thing is that you’re testing and that then means that any changes or concerns are detected quickly x |

That’s not gonna be necessary x I get a bit annoyed they call it an STI as it doesn’t have to be sexually transmitted. Also, it could have lain dormant in you for many years and got awoken when you were poorly x |

Can I just clarify that everyone is talking about the same thing?
HPV has nothing to do with cold sores or shingles, its completely different.
HPV can cause cancer and genital warts.
Cold sores and shingles is herpes.
Dont worry yourself op, lots of women experience this, myself included.
If you tell the guy that you're seeing that you have HPV and he tells you to piss off as you said, then you're better off without him.
For a site that is supposed to be for the sexually liberated, there are an awful lot who have no idea about sexual health etc.
I think there should be a questionnaire to fill out about the subject before you're allowed to join!! |

HPV and cold sores are two separate things
HPV can be the cause of abnormal cells leading to cancer. Takes around two years for you body to get rid of it, and you'll you'll be annually checked. If on the 2 year mark you're still positive they'll send you for a colposcopy to check for abnormal cells. And if nothing shows you get checked again I think at 3 years. So don't sweat at its sound much worse than it is.
Smears are done every 3 years years. It's entirely possible to have HPV between smears and never even know.
Most people have it at some point.
Men have it but don't even get tested regularly for it like we do.
I had it once, it went before the 2 year mark. And I didn't have abnormal cells either. I'm only adding that so you know it can come and go and not cause abnormal cells and you can be totally fine.

There is no hpv test available for men.
Looking forward, if you have kids ensure they get the vaccine that is now available to both boys and girls in their early teens. This will massively help reduce cervical and neck cancer rates over time. |

Who said there was?
Any virus when you are physically down, as the OP said she was, can trigger historical viral infections to activate.
Covid was particularly nasty for reactivating some of the 14 high risk types of hpv, and since skin to skin passage of it, is the main way most people contract it. You have zero idea of when you picked it up it and that's why it can be mistakenly assumed it's a only a sexual infection...

My last 2 smears have come back for HPV, my third is this week and I am hoping for a clear one this time, I followed advice and gave up smoking so I am hoping this will have helped.
It is a scary thing because you see stuff in Google and it doesn't make much sense and you certainly don't get to see your GP about the outcome (I'm sure you could make an appointment but that could be in 6 months time!) And a letter just appears in the post.
Just remember you aren't alone and more women are actually talking about it now, which helps massively x |

Try not to worry. I've had 3 smears come back positive, I had to go to the hospital for a Colposcopy with the Gynae team. They takes a closer look at your cervix. I'll also say I get cold scores when I'm run down or stressed.
It could be that the reason you are |

Oh my darling. It is nothing to worry about. I was you, and April the 5th all was well again.
I got a HPV positive result three years ago, no abnormal cells like you. And told to come back in a year.
I went back HPV positive again, no changes, come back again in another year.
The year later and my smear revealed grade 2 changes. I was sent to the hospital, and they removed the cells on my cervix, and I have another smear in October.
It is very scary. But they wait because like any virus your body can fight it off without you realising. In some cases it doesn't (like mine) and you need help.
It isn't cancer. And it doesn't make you dirty.
My inbox is open if you need *hugs* |

Try not to worry.
I had exactly the same results as you a while back, but was reassured that it is most likely nothing to worry about, and is very common. In most cases it clears up all on its own and its presence doesn't mean that you've done anything wrong.
My 12 month follow up was clear.

Bit of info on it.
How human papillomavirus (HPV) is spread
Many types of HPV affect the mouth, throat or genital area. They're easy to catch.
You do not need to have penetrative sex.
You can get HPV from:
any skin-to-skin contact of the genital area
vaginal, anal or oral sex
sharing sex toys
HPV has no symptoms, so you may not know if you have it.
It's very common. Most people will get some type of HPV in their life.
Important
You do not have to have sexual contact with a lot of people to get HPV. You can get HPV the first time you have sex.
Conditions linked to human papillomavirus (HPV)
Most of the time HPV does not cause any problems.
In some people, some types of HPV can cause:
genital warts
abnormal changes in the cells that can sometimes turn into cancer
HPV types linked to cancer are called high-risk types.
Cancers linked to high-risk HPV include:
cervical cancer
anal cancer
penile cancer
vulval cancer
vaginal cancer
some types of head and neck cancer
You can have HPV for many years without it causing problems.
You can have it even if you have not been sexually active or had a new partner for many years. |
