The hollow stuff can obviously be compressed, but not things that are solid, such as metal landing struts etc. |

I wouldn't, no matter how much money I had.
You couldn't give me enough money to go on that submarine or any other one; I get claustrophobic in a car with the windows closed! |

I don’t want to sound too unsympathetic but the amount of media attention on this is so disproportionate.
If we think about other sea going vessels that get lost at sea with only a fraction of the attention. The Clipper Round the World race has had several tragedies and I am guessing not many people on here have heard about those.
Billionaires have enough sycophants surrounding them, spending obscene sums of money on an extreme tourist cruise did not eliminate the risk and the amount of resource spent trying to find them was ridiculous. There was never going to be a rescue. Read about the Kursk, fascinating and incredibly challenging. |

Is t it just?
Five multi-millionaires / billionaires instantly lose lives lost in high risk vanity pursuit as vessel implodes. World wide media attention and rescue efforts.
Five hundred migrants suffer slower death by drowning trapped in a ship in the Mediterranean while trying to make a better lives for their families… world shrugs its shoulders.
The inequality we tolerate makes me sick. |

I was saying only the other day that I didn't see this having a happy ending.
The front viewport was only certified for 1,300 meters whereas Titantic is 3,800 meters down.
There were reports of a chap who had been sacked from the company after raising safety concerns.
What did surprise me though was that Paul-Henrt Nargeolet was on the sub. He's an experienced deep sea explorer and has dived Titanic many times before. I would have thought, with his experience, he might have noticed things on the sub.
Very sad, but it was an accident waiting to happen |

Considering that there was no apparent emergency backup, I wouldn't dream of using such a service, however much I'd want to see the Titanic. They took that risk and were content with it, it's just tragic that their worst nightmare resulted |

Some would say a risk too far to go down to a depth of 3,800 m in a sub thats viewing window is only safe to 1,300 m is i would say a risk too much and a worse death i couldn't think of but i guess you'd die pretty quick, water pressure and temperature, RIP to all on board |

I know it's a joke, but the Titan has actually been in use since 2018 and made more than 50 Dives. It has made three previous dives to The Titanic, there were technical issues on two of those trips. It had a record of SIX trips hit by technical issues over it's five years in use. |

The company's approach to the design and production of the sub seems to be questionable, which then makes you wonder about the maintenance regime / was it tested for stress fractures, etc after the previous dives.
The only good thing is that those onboard wouldn't have known anything about the implosion and would have died instantly, though its heartbreaking to think that they knew they were in trouble with little chance of rescue beforehand. RIP. |

"The sharks, sorry the lawyers will be getting ready to feast now. They will litigate this one to the bottom of the ocean "
I was thinking the very same but the incident happened in International Waters and also all of the passengers, when they handed their £250k fare over, all signed waivers. So, yes, the lawyers will still have a field day as you suggest but it'll be even more messy surely. |

I think that waivers would be "null & void" if negligence could be proven... A poor maintenance record, documented safety concerns over design, etc |

It's a line from 'Cunk on Earth' referring to the actual Titanic.

Again I'd think the very same. But according to a news item I heard this aft apparently not. With it being International Waters that's how they managed to operate. They also interviewed one of the stars of the Simpsons who has been down (and back) in this sub and he was mentioning all the waivers etc... The word "death" cropped up a lot he said.
I'm sure the law will change after this. Surely it has to! |

Just because it happened in international waters doesn't avoid legal liability. In international waters the state that the vessel is registered to has legal jurisdiction (in this case its Canada).
Yes, the lawyers will have a field day and waivers can be overturned. Bear in mind the wealth that the victims had and the financial capabilities of their families to pursue this. There is also the possibility of a class action, where they could combine their financial resources (though in reality, this wouldn't be necessary).
However, this all relates to civil proceedings and there is the potential criminal negligence side, which cannot be avoided with waivers. Corporate manslaughter does not exist in Canadian law, but criminal negligence does and this can apply to individuals within a corporation, so undoubtedly the authorities and lawyers will be looking into this too. |

From my motorsport background, the club I was part off was sued by a driver who was injured competing at an event. His argument was the track was in a dangerous condition. Our argument was you’ve signed a waiver, you knew the track, yet took part so don’t have a case. The waiver was produced by international motorsport authorities, approved by our insurers, and used widely. The judge ruled quite quickly that the waiver was null and void because it required the signatory to sign their rights away. We lost the case. So, waivers… not worth the paper they are written on.
In this case, it was a commercial operation. They paid money to a (I’m assuming) US company. International waters doesn’t matter… if negligence can be proven. The families and the businesses behind them have resources to take action against the company to make good their financial losses.
Regaling their final moments, a hull failure at that depth would be catastrophic… it is highly unlikely they would have even known that they had a problem before imploding. There will not be anything to recover. |

"Just because it happened in international waters doesn't avoid legal liability. In international waters the state that the vessel is registered to has legal jurisdiction (in this case its Canada)."
Our understanding is the Canadian ship was hired by the sub company purely as transport. Not as any form of support or base of operations. The sub was untethered, fully autonomous, and owned and operated independently of the ship company.
That makes the transport ship nothing more than a man-with-a-van. If you got someone to transport a piece of kit from A to B, hang around while you use it at point B, then take you back to point A; they can not be held responsible if that piece of kit is knackered and you nominate yourself for the Darwin Awards that year.
It's got to be entirely the responsibility of the sub company and design engineers. Unless the construction company also had any input into the design and operational specs, they are also off the cook. |
