So I’ve just found out the full quote of blood is thicker than water and it’s turned the whole thing upside down.
I think we all think that this quote means that family bonds and loyalty should be stronger than that of friends?!
The full quote is:
The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.
Which means that your bonds should be stronger with those that you choose rather than family.
Have you ever heard this full quote before?
What others are out there that mean something else to what we think?

Ah but what if the more generally accepted usage of 'Blood is thicker than water' came into use either without common knowledge of the biblical quote or, quite possibly, completely coincidentally?
I can accept that, years ago, relatively more people probably read the Bible or were influenced by it but there is nothing to stop the normal usage having evolved in parallel.
Even if it evolved later, which seems likely, it should be perfectly acceptable for it to have a different proverbial meaning to that expressed in the scriptures. |

I didn’t say it wasn’t acceptable just that I had never heard to full quote before and found it interesting enough to share
