My little one is poorly. She came out in a rash on Friday which has been getting worse all day. She says it's itchy but isn't scratching loads. She now has a temperature and has started with a barking cough. She's just turned 6. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms/ know what it might be? Thanks

You best ring NHS helpline - or take her to walk in centre - she probably needs antibiotics x

Where is the rash?.....if it's on her trunk and/or her back then seek a professional opinion straight away, any doctor worth his or her salt will be out to you post haste.

No but, a fever a rash and now a cough... Clearly not getting better - I would say time to check with doctors.... Out if hrs GP or even A&E....

Best wishes hope she gets well soon

Having had personal experience of something very much like this I would ask if the Op has a car?.....if so, please don't hang around and get that child straight down to the hospital.

Chances are it's something minor, but please don't take that chance and if you have a car then use it.

Guys - I'd suggest there was confusion and miss understanding...

More importantly, did you hear back from NHS? and how's your baby? Still feverish, I'd keep an eye on that! X

prolly something minor, but you can't chance it... and waiting to hear back, can potentially be dangerous :-/

Thank you, yes, that was the first thing I did on Friday. She's asleep and comfy. She's had calpol and is drinking plenty water. If she is no better in the morning I will take her straight to the hospital. There are so many bugs going round that I felt sure someone would recognise the symptoms and be able to put my mind at rest while I waited for the callback.

Exactly right... and as I said before, OP didn't do anything wrong, shame we jumped to conclusions....

I personally would say, fabs is GREAT as your almost 100 percent likely to find someone online.... In stress, a part from professional advice you need someone to talk to... What better then a fab forum which actually has real people in it....

Totally agree with diamond up there, this is a great ace for support and advice and u can learn soapy things by just asking a simple question. It's a rolling conversation. There is no question to silly to ask.

As for a&e on a Saturday night at 2/3 pm with a small fractious child and god knows how many d*unks! Never! Unless it was an ambulance job, maybe local gp center.

If child is resting and comfy and taking fluids and u done the glass test follow ur instinct

Hope she's well again soon xx

You can also give paediatric nurofen along with calpol, keep her cool and as she is taking plenty of oral fluids she should be fine. I would advise seeing a doctor as soon as possiable in case she has croup although the rash dosent fit in. Best of luck.

Personally, if I were worried (mother who has taken four babies home, but only has three children), I'd pick up my child, get in my car, call a cab or ambulance and get them to hospital.

And as others have said, before you bash read the whole thread.

In an explanatory post after the first one it was explained that the OP had rung NHS direct and was waiting for the callback and had come online to distract from the pacing/nerves while they waited.

Perhaps it would have been helpful if that piece of info was in the OP? But when stressed who amongst us manages to be so thorough?

It seems to be automatic to judge people on here, and with human nature being prone to always think the worst we suddenly have a very bad mum with a very sick child who could be close to death being castigated for asking for advice from a community that claims to be helpful and sympathetic to it's members. Shame on you all.

The child has probably caught a bug that's going around and the OP has done everything a normal mum would do whilst awaiting for NHS Direct to confirm of allay her fears. She thought she'd pop on here in the meantime and ask if anyone else had knowledge of the symptoms she described. Maybe she asked on here because she's got to know certain posters and trusts their advice, as opposed to netmums where it also masquerades as loonies.com (Siren used to use it and the amount of wierdos on there is unreal).

If the OP really believed her child was imminent danger she would have her child up A&E immediately.

Wow some of these responses are amazing, the OP didn't say it was a life and death situation, just the child was ill. Children get ill all the time its part of building immunity.

No wander the nhs is struggling to cope if everyone goes running to A&E cos a child gets a cough, rash and fever

Unless the fever is over 40 or isn't going down with calpol and nurofen being given or the cough is making their lips blue or they're breathing I'd bad or the rash doesn't disappear under a glass or the child isn't responding well then why go to hospital?

Of course there is always the option to call the out of hours GP too.. They will ask standard questions when u ring and can decide how urgent it maybe for starters.

When I read the OP I took it as it sounded like a viral thing, which she has been told it is. No need to go into panic mode people.

Well done OP for dealing with the illness as it should be with calpol etc.. All you can do is keep them as comfy as poss and make sure there are no dramatic changes.

And no can't say its going around down here but I bet u will find most of the class have had this now

+1

I mean really, it's not like the OP was asking for a meet while waiting for a call-back. And just because she didn't give a detailed account of her actions prior to logging onto fabs, does that really justify being lambasted by folk - personally, I think not.

OP, hope your baby is feeling better soon, and yes, there are a lot of nasty bugs going around - well done on doing the basics, keeping your head and not being a panic-stricken mum

Thank you for the new understanding. When I posted on here originally it was 2am, I was on my own with a poorly child. She was perfectly safe and comfortable, sleeping soundly. I had rung NHS Direct but didn't think it was prudent to explain that (obviously my mistake was very quickly made clear to me) as I didn't realise that people would think I was asking for medical advice on a swingers site!!! I don't have a laptop, I do everything on my phone so while I was waiting for the callback I was keeping my phone in my hand so thought I'd see if anyone else had experienced anything similar. If I had felt it was A&E worthy I would have been straight down there, but I didn't feel it was, plus 2am Saturday night at A&E as someone pointed out is not the place for a sick child, she was better off to stay safe in her own bed. Of course if when the NHS rang back they felt it was necessary to go I would have, but from the symptoms I described they advised I was doing everything I could and to carry on. The next morning she was singing and dancing and back to her usual lovely self which was fantastic. I still took her to the out of hours doctors to be on the safe side and he confirmed it was viral, she was probably getting a cold and that she could even go back to school if I felt she was well enough (which I don't, so she's staying off today). I'm not a bad mother and was very upset that before asking the question "have you phoned nhs direct" was asked, it was assumed that I hadn't and that I was perving on a swinging site instead of caring for my sick child.

"OP I would assume considers people on here sincere and friendly... Only natural if you are stressed and worried that you would ask for advice and support from such people.....

"

The thing is... having seen some of the good natured and friendly advise in the past, which has been utter bollox posted for the effect of looking 'friendly', it's really the last place to seek advice. Seeking a bit of support may be, but that is not how the opening post was set out... no matter what claims of 'misunderstanding' there have been.

The best advice given has been to ring NHS direct or take the child to hospital. As the OP claims they already knew that, it seems they didn't need advice after all.

Threads such as this one do make me wonder about people's priorities.... and common sense.

I wasn't asking for advice, simply whether anyone else recognised the symptoms I quoted. I presume that not many did, as that question wasn't answered. I had asked the question in places other than on here, but as I had expected this was the place that got that fastest response. Writing on here wasn't jeopardising my child, no one was hurt by my asking the question.

"Thank you for the new understanding.

"

Hmmmmm.... of course the other 'spin' on this is....

The rash started Friday.

The symptoms got worse.

You didn’t seek medical advice until Saturday night.

Despite at that time not knowing what was wrong you felt it was better for her to be left in bed than go to A&E because A&E would be busy.

If people didn't give you the replies you were hoping for it is because of the concern they had for your child's wellbeing....... is that such a bad thing or would you have preferred a bunch of fluffy replies and them not give a shit?

Omg so they all thought they knew best of a situation they barely knew anything about?? For real

If there wasn't enough info in the OP then ask? But everyone is just assuming..

I serisously can't believe this response that people are concerned when they don't even have the facts or asked them! What a joke

Yes I am 'for real' are you?

Why would they need more facts when the best advice is....... seek advice from medical people.

It's really easy to say people should have asked this that and the other when we now know it is nothing serious.... in hindsight.

The child had had a rash since Friday and symptoms had got worse... yet the OP didn't ring NHS Direct until late on Saturday night. The OP must have been concerned or why ring then? At the time of posting the OP didn't know what was wrong.... thankfully it has turned out to be nothing serious where time was of the essence. Had that not been the case, would you still have wanted people to waste time asking for more details?

As the child is ok, this thread seems to have become redundant now.

You don't need to explain or justify yourself. Glad she is better xx

O o O oo

This thread will look disjointed as I took off a load of posts that contained a link and number.

To the OP I am glad your little one is fine now.....but I would have given you the same advice of you need medical help not help from a swinging website.

After you had been given this advice you then decided to elaborate and say you had already phoned them....people can't read your mind so will have answered to your first post, which is allowed.

I am in the camp of a swinging site would not be somewhere I would log in when I was worried over a sick child....it doesn't make me a bad person for saying so.

Might just be me but I can't see the difference between reading a newspaper, watching the television, or reading posts on a forum on a website be it a swingers site or the local forum for the area where you live whilst a sick child is in bed asleep while waiting for NHs direct to ring back concerning the child to give advice can't see the harm in it in my opinion don't see why the fingers are being pointed to make out the op is a bad parent for doing this
