The ‘unsolved’ is uncalled for"
Perhaps “they” are alluding to another category of mystery, not mentioned, one that has been solved but the solution forgotten, as opposed to an extant mystery which they tortologically refer to as “unsolved”.
I’m not a detective so I could be wrong

Their reply is usually "can I ask another?"
